More than 9,000 American soldiers who died in the battle are buried here. All the crosses face the direction of the American continent. Under each tombstone, the coffin is placed upright, representing the spirit of the soldiers who would rather die than surrender. France donated the American Cemetery to the United States as a permanent territory. These American children who sacrificed in a foreign land have finally returned home!”
