Traditional water puppetry originating from the rice paddies of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ho Chi Minh City. If you want to truly immerse yourself in the local culture of Vietnam’s largest city, catch a show at the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre! The theatre is located in Tao Dan Park and performs nightly. The shows are performed entirely in Vietnamese, but the puppetry and accompanying music appeal to foreign audiences as well. An orchestra, usually located to one side of the stage, uses drums, wooden bells, trumpets, bamboo flutes and cymbals to add sound effects and play traditional music, while dragons, fairies and other decorative figures dance on water platforms. Most shows feature humorous depictions of Vietnamese folk tales, legends and important seasonal events, such as the rice harvest.

Tickets changed on site, very fast. There are singing, there are puppets dancing, and it is lively. It seems that the location near the Unification Palace is very good to find us and we will be there. The theater is not big. It is very clear to sit before and after sitting. The children are very happy to watch it in about an hour.

The puppet show was great. The show was in a theater, two times a day, only at night. I came on Saturday, there were a lot of people, and a Malaysian sitting in the back row was the third time. The show center has a pool and all the performances are displayed in the pool. Six voice actors were made on both sides of the pool, voiced for the puppets and played folk music. The puppets were controlled by the puppets under the pool. The puppets needed to be under the pool all the way, which was not easy. If you have been on one of these before then you will know what to expect. They are great to get round the city, sight see and learn a little about history. The auto Que can be a little behind at times but it&rsquo;s not a problem. They have open top buses which we did find were quite busy at times and struggled for a seat but we ended up sitting downstairs with the aircon and the view was just as good. Tour guides on the buses are very helpful. We paid on trip and we found it is cheaper then at the desk.
