Exhibitions
The work of Phyllida Barlow (1944 – 2023) will take over Hauser & Wirth Somerset in a celebration of the British artist’s transformative approach to sculpture, marking the 10th anniversary of the arts center that was inaugurated by Barlow’s solo exhibition ‘GIG’ in 2014. The landmark exhibition, curated by Frances Morris, draws on her close working relationship with the artist during her lifetime. ‘Phyllida Barlow. unscripted’ will explore the evolution of Barlow’s formal and expressive vocabulary, bringing together singular sculptures, installations, studio maquettes and drawings from her extensive career, some of which will be on public view for the first time. ‘Over the last 10 years, Phyllida Barlow kept her fans and followers on the edge of their seats as she brought new and ever more audacious projects to life in venues across the world. Unfolding as a running commentary on the tragedies and absurdities of our time, each work formed part of an ongoing and intensely experimental investigation into the techniques and materials of art making, seeking visual equivalents to her own personal experience of living and looking.’—Frances Morris Over a career that spanned six decades, Barlow took inspiration from her surroundings to create imposing installations that can be at once menacing and playful. Barlow’s restless invented forms stretch the limits of mass, volume and height as they block, straddle and balance precariously. The audience is challenged into a new relationship with the sculptural object, the gallery environment and the world beyond. Barlow exhibited extensively across institutions internationally, including: Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto, Canada (2023); Public Art Fund, New York NY (2023); Chillida Leku, Hernani, Spain (2023); Sprengel Museum, Hanover, Germany (2022); ARTIST ROOMS, Tate Modern, London, UK (2021); Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany (2021); The Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (2019); La Biennale di Venezia, British Pavilion, Venice, Italy (2017); Kunsthalle Zürich, Zurich, Switzerland (2016); Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas TX (2015); Duveen Commission at Tate Britain, London, UK (2014). In 2022, Barlow was awarded the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung’s Kurt Schwitters Prize. Alongside the exhibition, Hauser & Wirth Learning will launch a new Education Lab, ‘Open Art School’, in partnership with Bath Spa University. Taking Barlow’s life-long engagement with arts education and notably her ethos of there being ‘no right or wrong way’ to be creative, the Education Lab will draw on the latest thinking within creative pedagogy and experimental learning. ‘Open Art School’ will provide an interactive space for new ideas, experiments and working methods, inviting a multitude of voices and communities to engage through making. In addition, the gallery’s summer artist residency program will welcome guest artists, Jessie Flood-Paddock, Young In Hong, Jack Killick and Hamish Pearch, to spend time living and working in Somerset. Selected by curator Frances Morris, and in the spirit of Phyllida Barlow, the artists will be invited to seek inspiration from the exhibition, landscape and architecture of Somerset, as well as conversations that develop between the group.

About Gemma Rolls-Bentley Gemma Rolls-Bentley has been at the forefront of contemporary art for almost two decades, working passionately to champion diversity in the field. She is the author of ‘Queer Art; From Canvas to Club and the Spaces Between’ (2024), published by Frances Lincoln (Quarto Publishing). Rolls-Bentley has curated for a range of international institutions, most recently the Leslie Lohman Museum of Art, New York NY; Somerset House, London, UK; Tom of Finland Foundation, Los Angeles CA; London Art Fair, UK; and Kkweer Arts, London, UK. In 2022, she curated the Brighton Beacon Collection, the largest permanent display of queer art in the UK, for Soho House Brighton. She has taught at numerous UK institutions including the Royal College of Art, London; Glasgow School of Art; and Goldsmiths, University of London. She co-chairs the Board of Trustees for the charity Queercircle, and sits on the Courtauld Association Committee. About Gray Wielebinski Gray Wielebinski is an artist living and working in London, UK. Wielebinski’s expansive practice incorporates installation, video, drawing, performance, collage, sculpture, and more. He explores intersecting themes of power, nationhood, desire and memory. The process of collaging runs through his practice in many forms. Reconfiguring and transforming iconography and visual codes, his work interrogates dominant frameworks and belief systems and proposes alternatives. Continuously attentive to the fraught status of American mythology and landscape, his recent work has focused on surveillance, strategy, and secrecy, particularly as these intersect with questions of gender, sexuality, and the social. Wielebinski’s solo exhibitions include: ‘The Red Sun is High, The Blue Low,’ Institute of Contemporary Arts London, UK (2023); ‘Fratricide,’ Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles, CA (2023); ‘Love and Theft,’ 12.26 Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2023); ‘Oil and Water,’ Hales Gallery, London, UK (2023); and Selfridges Art Block Commission, London, UK (2023). The artist’s works were also on view as part of the group exhibition, ‘Present Tense,’ at Hauser & Wirth Somerset from January – April 2024. — Images: Gemma Rolls-Bentley, 2024. A crackling, comical, tender, and highly original novel about mental health, the certainties of medicine, buried trauma, love, death and time lost in the crushing – and comical – hopes of modern life. Vita Woods is on the brink. The days are dark, as much as things are going right. Vita is not leaving the house. In fact, she can barely make it out of bed. Instead, she spends long, blurred hours falling in and out of The Pit, dead to the world and to herself. For months, Vita has been sick with an illness that no doctor can diagnose. And recently, Luigi, a Renaissance poet nursing a 500-year-old heartbreak, has started showing up at her bedside, bringing snacks and unsolicited romantic advice. He says he's come to release her. The issue is: he may be a ghost, an apparition of her sickly mind. Then, when, an unexpected mix-up pushes her into the path of her upstairs neighbors, Vita finds friendship - and perhaps more - in the apartment above. But something about her condition keeps nagging at her. What if the problem is Vita herself? Because as far as anyone can prove...there's nothing wrong with her. ‘Wonderfully inventive… a hallucinatory, amazingly capcious novel’ 4* review in The Telegraph ‘A funny, philosophical novel that perfectly captures the surreal state of invisible illness… remarkable’ The Independent Kate Weinberg was born and lives in London. She studied English at Oxford and creative writing in East Anglia. She has worked as a slush pile reader, a bookshop assistant, a journalist and a ghost writer. She is the author of one previous novel, The Truants. Information Source: At the Chapel | eventbrite
