Join us at The Bookshop in Nashville on February 1, 2024, for a literary discussion and book signing with Monic Ductan, author of the captivating short story collection, "Daughters of Muscadine." This event will feature a thought-provoking conversation between Monic Ductan and Johnisha Levi, followed by an opportunity to mingle and have your book signed.
"Daughters of Muscadine" weaves together nine compelling stories set in Muscadine, Georgia, against the backdrop of two significant events: the 1920s lynching of Ida Pearl Crawley and the 1980s drowning of Lucy Boudreaux, a talented high school basketball player. These events leave a lasting impact on the people and the community of Muscadine, particularly its Black Southern women who often find themselves marginalized due to their race and estranged from their loved ones.
Monic Ductan's debut collection delves into the lives of these women, exploring their complexities, vulnerabilities, and resilience. From a remorseful woman seeking connection with her adopted child to a lonely individual yearning for a relationship with a violent felon, these stories shed light on the experiences of Black women, rural women, Appalachian women, and working-class women over the past century. Ductan's writing showcases the extraordinary nature of everyday lives, reminiscent of acclaimed authors such as Alice Walker, Deesha Philyaw, James McBride, and Dorothy Allison.
Monic Ductan, an esteemed literature and creative writing professor at Tennessee Tech University, has been published in reputable journals like Oxford American, Southeast Review, and Shenandoah. Her notable essay, "Fantasy Worlds," was featured in The Best American Essays 2019.
Don't miss this opportunity to engage with Monic Ductan and immerse yourself in her compelling narratives. Mark your calendars for February 1, 2024, and join us at The Bookshop in Nashville for an unforgettable evening celebrating the power of storytelling. Admission to the event is free, and copies of "Daughters of Muscadine" will be available for purchase at the venue.
