Camille Henrot: A Number of Things | Hauser & Wirth

Jan 30–Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
Camille Henrot (b.1978, France) holds her first major solo exhibition in New York, Many Things, featuring large bronze sculptures and smaller works from her new “Abacus” series (2024). These works explore the friction between nascent imagination and social symbolic systems through children’s development tools, shoes, graphics and counting devices. In addition, new works from Henrot’s “Dos and Don’ts” series will also be on display, combining printing, painting and collage techniques to explore the relationship between social codes of conduct and civilization and obedience. The dog sculptures in the exhibition are tied to poles, symbolizing dependence, continuing Henrot’s exploration of emotional bonds. Her “Abacus” sculptures combine the form of ancient calculation tools with children’s bead mazes, suggesting the human impulse for self-optimization and the cycle of learning patterns. The “Dos and Don’ts” series reveals the constructed and performative nature of social identity through collage and disordered elements, continuing Henrot’s interest in information organization. The entire exhibition focuses on the complexity of living, learning and growing up in society, gently exploring how we find a balance between integrating into and resisting social structures in our daily lives.

Cut and Paste: Reframing Medieval Art | The Morgan Library & Museum

Feb 4–Jun 15, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
The idea of cutting up a medieval manuscript is almost unthinkable today. Historically, however, this practice was relatively common, and it reached a fever pitch in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. People cut up manuscripts for various reasons: Dealers unwilling to pay weight-based import duties on large choir books opted to remove their decorated initials and dispose of the heavy bindings. Art lovers excised pictures from manuscripts and pasted them into albums; many considered this an act of freeing precious artworks from the text-filled books that held them captive. The dismembering of manuscripts was thus regarded not as vandalism but as a tribute to the otherwise hidden illuminations.

Alfonso Ossorio & Nandor Fodor: The Search for the Beloved | Michael Rosenfeld Gallery

Feb 8–May 3, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
Michael Rosenfeld Gallery presents Alfonso Ossorio & Nandor Fodor: The Search for the Beloved, a first-of-its-kind exhibition exploring the impact of the theories of Hungarian psychoanalyst Nandor Fodor on the art of Alfonso Ossorio (1916–1990). Fodor’s 1949 book, The Search for the Beloved: A Clinical Investigation of the Trauma of Birth and Pre-Natal Conditioning (New York: Hermitage Press, Inc, 1949) was an early contribution to the field of prenatal psychology, and while many of his theories have lost their currency, the provocative language, vivid imagery, and theories put forth in the book provided Ossorio with, in his own words, “a springboard from which to take off.”[1] From his early surrealist drawings to his celebrated mixed-media assemblages known as Congregations, the works presented in Alfonso Ossorio & Nandor Fodor: The Search for the Beloved reveal Ossorio’s enduring exploration of themes addressed in Fodor’s book, notably birth, death, suffering, and sex.

Julian Opie | New York

Feb 13–Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
“Each retina reads a flat image, but your body senses space, and that – combined with bifocal vision and movement – means that a picture with a carved depth creates a kind of animation, a sort of magic trick as your brain reads, with image and material competing in the same space.”Julian Opie, 2024 Lisson Gallery presents an exhibition of new and recent works byJulian Opie, united by the theme of the walking figure. Encompassing sculptures, animations and paintings, these extend the artistic vocabulary that he has developed over four decades – “a language of forms, of images, of people.”

Collections Spotlight, Spring 2025 | The Morgan Library & Museum

Feb 14–May 4, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
Objects on view in J. Pierpont Morgan’s library reflect the past, present, and future of the collections in four curatorial departments, comprising illuminated manuscripts from the medieval and renaissance eras, five hundred years of printed books, literary manuscripts and correspondence, as well as printed music and autograph manuscripts by composers. These selections, which rotate three times a year, provide an opportunity for Morgan curators to spotlight individual items, to consider their historical and aesthetic contexts, and to tell the stories behind these artifacts and their creators. The rotation currently on view features items that complement the exhibition Belle da Costa Greene: A Librarian's Legacy. The selection showcases Greene’s acquisitions and demonstrates her intensive research into the collection and wide-ranging intellectual interests. Additional objects relate to literary and theatrical works that address themes reflective of her life, including racial passing. A special highlight is the last known photograph of Greene, taken in the West Room in 1950.

New Objectivity 100th Anniversary Exhibition | New York

Feb 20–May 26, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
The New Objectivity movement is considered one of the most important art movements of the 20th century. It was popular in the German-speaking region of Europe from the 1920s to the 1930s. Its characteristics are that it combines critical realism, social commentary and detailed depiction of contemporary life, gets rid of the high emotional concentration of expressionism, and creates in a realistic way. Practitioners of New Objectivity are roughly divided into two camps based on different philosophical viewpoints. One side is the realists with social critical spirit, represented by Otto Dix, George Grosz, Georg Scholz, and the other side is the classicists who focus on harmony and beauty, represented by Alexander Kanoldt, Georg Schrimpf, Christian Schad. In June 1925, Gustav F. Hartlaub, director of the Mannheim Art Museum in Germany, planned and held the "New Objectivity" exhibition, bringing New Objectivity into the public eye. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the exhibition, the New Gallery in New York will hold an exhibition with the same name. Through different types of works such as painting, sculpture, photography, decorative art, works on paper, and film, the exhibition explores the fierce debate between different camps of the New Objectivity movement and explains the cultural, political and social complexity reflected by New Objectivity.
