Gagosian is pleased to announce Tutto, an exhibition of new paintings by Walton Ford at 522 West 21st Street. Ford’s practice centers on how animals are represented and the intersections of animal and human lives. Tutto is his first body of work to focus on a single individual: the eccentric Milanese heiress Luisa Casati (1881–1957). Depicting the exotic animals that she kept, Ford portrays her years in Venice shortly before World War I. Known as La Marchesa, Casati was one of Europe’s wealthiest women and is legendary for her extravagant pursuit of aesthetic extremes and social recognition. Startled onlookers describe how she wore snakes as necklaces, walked with a pair of cheetahs in Venice’s piazzas, and attended an opera clad in a headdress of peacock feathers that were stained with the blood of a freshly killed chicken.

Stephen Friedman Gallery, New York presents 'A Kinder Time', an exhibition of new paintings by British artist Clare Woods. This marks her first solo show with the gallery.In this exhibition, Woods deploys still life to meditate on the fragile threshold between life and death. As Charlotte Mullins (art critic, writer and broadcaster) writes in As I Please, a major monograph recently published on the artist’s work, “while still life has historically been belittled by academic institutions for depicting inanimate objects, it is this reduction in form, this stripping out of narrative, that makes the genre the perfect vehicle through which to communicate what it means to be alive, to be human, to be afraid, to be present, to face death”. Schoelkopf Gallery, one of the world's most trusted authorities in American art, presents Clifford Ross | What Remains..., a solo exhibition showcasing a powerful new series of graphite and ink paintings from 2020–21. This remarkable body of work marks Ross’s return to painting which started in 2013, even while he continued his well known work in photography. Petzel presents That Thought Might Think, an exhibition of panoramic paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Emma Webster. The show marks Webster’s solo debut with the gallery. These new works are Webster’s largest to date, and depict expansive, revelatory vistas of genesis and apocalypse. Painted amid the Los Angeles fires, her two paintings offer a front row seat into dramatic, fantastical maquettes of rupturing landscapes. Morphing light, space, and scale, Webster speaks to the precarity of the natural world and the role of artifice.
