Cold War Scotland | National Museum of Scotland

Jul 13, 2024–Jan 4, 2026 (UTC)
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
The Cold War was a 40-year nuclear stand-off between the USA and the Soviet Union after the Second World War. Scotland’s unique landscape provided a useful base for Allied military preparations and research. The impact of the war still lingers in Scottish politics, culture and memory. Scots played an active role in the global conflict as soldiers within intelligence services and as part of voluntary civil defences. The exhibition will draw on Scotland’s rich history of Cold War-era protest and activism. Cold War Scotland is an output of Materialising the Cold War, a collaborative research project between National Museums Scotland and the University of Stirling. The project explores how the Cold War heritage is represented and how museums can adapt to tell this story in future. Materialising the Cold War is funded by a major grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Edinburgh
Arts
Craft
Zoe Lorimer will lead a group of artists in discussion and food sharing to explore what (re)connecting to nature looks like for you. This is the first workshop in Rhubaba's Dòigh Nàdair series of workshops to usher new stewards into the Scottish landscape. Zoe Lorimer begins the series in Edinburgh, at Scotland's smallest nature reserve, bringing together a small group to discuss and interrogate their relationship with nature and how they would like engage with the land. The workshop will explore: Colonial-like interactions between humans and the rest of the natural world The origins of romanticised images of nature and the development of urban landscapes. How social class is understood and interrogated in Scottish landscapes. The relationship between botany, plant breeding and colonialism/eugenics. The workshop will end with the group making pizzas and snacks together in a mud oven. Please note this workshop is only open to people categorised by colour. Rhubaba defines artists categorised by colour as People categorised by Colour’ and is a self-identifying term. While we use the term PCC, we acknowledge the limitations of this terminology. This includes people who identify as Black, brown, people of colour, Global Majority, mixed-race, multiple heritage or are from the Global South, or are East and South-East Asian, West Asian, Asian, African, African-Caribbean, Caribbean, Latinx, Pacific Islander, Indigenous, or First Nations, and diasporas. We use this term to address and overcome systemic barriers that people face directly or indirectly based on their ethnic or national identities, race or perceived racial identities, or the colour of their skin as per the Equality Act of 2010. Johnstone Terrrace Gardens is not a step free venue. Directions: From St Giles Cathedral, walk up the Royal Mile towards Edinburgh Castle. At the roundabout by the Hub, take the turning into Johnston Terrace. Continue along Johnston Terrace, just past the Castle Rock Hostel there are a set of steps on the left (Castle Wynd South, also known as Patrick Geddes steps) which head down to the Grassmarket. Go down the steps and the reserve entrance is the first gate on the right. Information Source: Rhubaba | eventbrite

Theravāda Buddhism | National Galleries of Scotland: National

Sep 16, 2024–Mar 9, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
This thought-provoking display charts the history and influence of the Theravāda Buddhist tradition across the world, including its role in Scotland today. The Theravāda tradition is one of the oldest forms of Buddhism. As one of the two main branches of the faith, it remains strong in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. The display includes a Buddha on loan from The Dhammapadipa Temple in Edinburgh. The Buddha was designed and made in Thailand in 2013, then later gifted to Temple where it is now used in their garden meditation room. The image takes inspiration from the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat (Great Victorious Buddha), one of the most revered Buddha images in Thailand. Alongside the loan are 40 objects from the South and Southeast Asian collection, dating from the 2nd century AD to the present day. They include amulets, relics, statues, and votive offerings, all of which were and are used by Buddhists in their everyday religious practice. A set of 19th century spinning gongs from Myanmar are also on display. Audio recordings of the gongs provide visitors with a sensory experience, representative of the sound of visiting a temple. The gongs are played by Ewan Millar, percussion student at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

The Ayrshire Nestling by Gerry Cambridge - Book Launch | The Saltire Society

Literary Arts
This is the story of teenage Jed - 'Oxy' in its earlier pages - an oddball outsider who discovers a liking for birds but is baffled by everything else. A hard book to describe, its sometimes-comic narrative includes teenage paranoia, obsessions, eating disorders, religious sectarianism, repression, working-class life, father/son relationships, and wild birds' eggs. Underpinned by a fascination for the natural world, it is emphatically not of the 'plashy fen' school of nature writing. At root it is about the small moments, intently described, which are, ultimately, all we have. The Ayrshire Nestling will be available for sale exclusively at this in-person launch, priced £14. To order other copies, contact the author directly. Information Source: Jenny Lindsay | eventbrite

Join Kevin Adams as he discusses is recently published book Great Windows in Modern Architecture An exhibiton of drawings and models associated with the book will be on display in our Members Room About the book: Windows are moments in modern architecture where we look to ascertain elegance, technical expression and material language or to capture a certain atmosphere. A window opening is as much an interval and an opportunity as it is a device for admitting light, air or views; it is simultaneously a physical aperture but also a philosophical opening of collaboration and reflection. The book explores how the act of detailing and situating windows in buildings is a key proponent in the language of architecture, which both informs and works with the contingencies of design and construction. It investigates 18 case studies in-depth using painstakingly drawn details and vivid photographs in full colour to define what makes these windows “great” and how each window is situated within both its technical and philosophical context and as an overall development of modern architecture. About the event: Date: Tuesday 24th September 2024 Doors open: 17:30 Talk begins: 18:30 Venue: RIAS Bookshop, 15 Rutlnad Square, Edinburgh, EH1 2BE Tickets: FREE *Our event space is located on the first floor, please let us know in advance if you have any access needs and we will do our best to assist you.
