Singapore
Arts
Theater
PermataKu, My Jewel Jewelry has a powerful language of its own. It speaks of love, memories, and history, often outlasting the span of a single lifetime. One of the most sentimental practices in families is the tradition of passing down jewelry. These cherished items carry a legacy, telling tales of the ancestors who once wore them. This show will explore the significance of jewelry, emphasizing the unique qualities of the gems that resonate deeply with both the choreographer and Atrika. The choreographers are members of the Atrika Dance Company family, and the sentimental value of ownership and heritage will enrich the entire show. It will highlight what the jewelry means to them on a personal level. The audience will leave with a deeper understanding of the Malay culture that has been nurtured within Atrika, revealing why it holds such profound value for each and every member. Known for its innovation and forward-thinking approach, Atrika Dance Company will present this show with a more unique and intriguing use of props, symbolizing how life evolves and elevates over time. The show will highlight, through customs and practices, the key qualities of a Malay dance company and its enduring commitment to passing these traditions down to future generations. Information Source: City Book Room | eventbrite

If you do not have a myLibrary username, you can create one here: https://account.nlb.gov.sg About the Programme Each artwork is created to invoke feelings and memories. Each colour and pattern create a visual narrative and convey stories of the different artists. Join storyteller Hafiz Rashid and Wild Dot for an engaging session of regional folktales inspired by the exhibition’s artworks, paired with insights into their concepts and the stories behind them. About the Artist Wild Dot is a nature-guided studio from Singapore started by Shirin Rafie and Liz Liu in 2020. Combining their interests in art, botany, and design, they have been experimenting with inks and pigments from plants and earth found in Singapore, and are just beginning to uncover the stories behind the colours people make. Their mission is to share the joy and labour of colour making through designing playful artmaking experiences with others. They also hope that the process of making can be an accessible way for more people to form more meaningful relations with the environment. Hafiz Rashid is an experienced museum docent who has been volunteering with the National Heritage Board (NHB) since 2013. He is also a storyteller who has performed at various events such as Storyfest at the Arts House and Singapore Heritagefest. In 2021, he received the Teman Warisan award in recognition of his dedication and contribution to Malay arts and heritage. His research interests include learning about the history, culture, folklore, and languages of the Malay Archipelago, with a special focus on textiles. He is often seen wearing these textiles during his tours and storytelling sessions, sharing the stories behind their motifs and designs - stories with deep links to the past. About CANVAS/S: Tales as New as Time Take a fresh look at an old tale with our exhibition series CANVAS/S: Tales as New as Time.
