Artist Michael C. Thorpe and Jennifer Swope, David and Roberta Logie Curator of Textiles at the MFA Boston, discuss Barstool Sports, a solo exhibition of Michael C. Thorpe's work. This new collection represents the artist's transition to creating abstract pieces. The figures in the artwork are intentionally disproportionate, with simply drawn faces. The works also feature mixed media, such as crayon on textile, soft sculptures sewn onto the textile pieces, and collages of digital print medium. Despite these changes, each piece retains Thorpe's signature vibrant and colorful compositions, and maintains the creative expressiveness that sets his work apart, and the creative expressiveness that sets him apart. Visit our website to read about the show, artist, and the artworks. Wheelchair access via elevator, parking lot on site entrance on Albany St, kids and pets friendly, free and open to the public. Boulder SURJ is proud to present the first event of our Justice Film Series! Join us to view the vital film THIS IS WHO WE ARE, followed by a thought-provoking community conversation led by Film Director Katrina Miller and YOUnify Director of Engagement Pedro Silva. Doors will open at 6PM, and we will be meeting in the Canyon Theater in the Boulder Public Library. The programming will begin at 6:15 sharp, so plan on arriving early to allow time for parking and finding snacks & seating before the movie starts. Boulder, Colorado, prides itself on being beautiful, welcoming, and inclusive. However, in 2019, racially-charged and dangerous policing involving a Black university student made national news. Directed by celebrated activist and filmmaker Katrina Miller, documentary film THIS IS WHO WE ARE explores the gap between Boulder’s self-image and the more complex lived experiences—both historical and contemporary—of its Black citizens. After witnessing the powerful stories and message of this film, you'll have the special opportunity to participate in a thought-provoking community discussion facilitated by Katrina Miller herself and Pedro Silva. This group conversation will dive deep into the emotions brought up by watching the film in a safe, respectful environment for all. This event is FREE, though donations are welcome so that we can contiue our programming into 2025 and keep paying our filmmakers and facillitators while maintaining a zero cost experience and remain open to all who would like to come! If you are able, please donate through our 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, Longmont Community Foundation. If you can't make this event, our series will continue on October 5th at the Boulder Public Library - more info to come. Information Source: Showing Up for Racial Justice Boulder | eventbrite

We are thrilled to welcome Michelle Knudsen and Kevin Hawkes for a pop-up signing. Stop by any time between 2:00 and 3:00 to meet the authors and get a book signed! Their titles will be available for purchase. About the Author: Michelle Knudsen is the New York Times best-selling author of Library Lion, illustrated by Kevin Hawkes; Argus, illustrated by Andréa Wesson; Big Mean Mike, illustrated by Scott Magoon; and Marilyn’s Monster, illustrated by Matt Phelan, as well as the Trelian middle-grade fantasy trilogy and the Evil Librarian YA horror-comedy trilogy. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, and is terrified of spiders. About the Illustrator: Kevin Hawkesis the award-winning illustrator of more than fifty acclaimed picture books, including the New York Times best-selling Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen, Me, All Alone at the End of the World by M. T. Anderson, The Librarian Who Measured the Earth by Kathryn Lasky, and Sidewalk Circus and Weslandia by Paul Fleischman. He is also the acclaimed author-illustrator of both picture books and chapter books. Kevin Hawkes lives in Maine. About the Books: Luigi the Spider who Wanted to be a Kitten: On a street of old houses, a big hairy spider is searching for a home with dark corners to hide in. But when he wakes up, he finds a hand reaching for him and a lady proclaiming that she has always wanted a kitten—and will name him Luigi! At first, a somewhat puzzled Luigi, used to being left alone to creep and dangle and spin webs, resists her kind advances. But soon, tasty breakfasts and getting tucked into bed (no one’s ever wished him good night before) have him thinking that kittens surely live magical lives. I will be a kitten! he decides. But how long can he keep up his facade, and what might be at stake in pretending to be someone you’re not? Library Lion: Miss Merriweather, the head librarian, is very particular about rules in the library. No running allowed. And you must be quiet. But when a lion comes to the library one day, no one is sure what to do. There aren't any rules about lions in the library. And, as it turns out, this lion seems very well suited to library visiting. His big feet are quiet on the library floor. He makes a comfy backrest for the children at story hour. And he never roars in the library, at least not anymore. But when something terrible happens, the lion quickly comes to the rescue in the only way he knows how. Michelle Knudsen's disarming story, illustrated by the matchless Kevin Hawkes in an expressive timeless style, will win over even the most ardent of rule keepers. East City Bookshop celebrates the release of Intermezzo by Sally Rooney with a special happy hour event. Join our booksellers for an evening of refreshments, trivia, giveaways, and more! Note on Format: This is an in-person, authorless event. ABOUT INTERMEZZO An exquisitely moving story about grief, love, and family—but especially love—from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney. Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common. Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined. For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude—a period of desire, despair, and possibility; a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.
