Inspired by everyday objects and vernacular furniture, Hugh Hayden’s visceral sculptures explore the American dream. Seeking to “transform materials from our everyday lived experience,” Hayden’s work challenges stereotypes and beliefs about class, race, and gender. Join Hayden in conversation with WBUR’s Arielle Gray for a discussion of the artist’s work and practice as embodied in the comprehensive survey Hugh Hayden: Home Work at the Rose Art Museum, as well the Boston-area site-specific engagements: Gulf Stream (2022) presented by the Boston Public Art Triennial, and Huff and a Puff (2023) at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS Arielle Gray is a Boston-based journalist, writer, and artist. She is a reporter for WBUR, Boston's NPR station, where she covers Black and brown communities through the lens of art and culture. She has written for NPR, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Boston Art Review, and ZORA Magazine. As an artist, Gray's practice examines the liminal space between her various identities—queer, Black, and neurodivergent—to find places of possibility and creation. In 2020, she received a Create Well Fund Award and was named a 2021 A4A artist-in-residence at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts. In 2022, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum named her the 2022–2024 Luminary Artist, where Gray conceived the Future Archive Project, a community audio and photography exhibition highlighting Black LGBTQIA+ individuals in Greater Boston. Hugh Hayden (b. Dallas, Texas, 1983) lives and works in New York City. He holds an MFA from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University. Recent solo exhibitions include Boogey Men at the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, Miami, FL, which traveled to the Blaffer Art Museum, Houston, TX; Hugh Hayden: Creation Myths, Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, NJ; and Hugh Hayden, White Columns, New York, NY. Recent group exhibitions include Forest of Dreams: Contemporary Tree Sculpture, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, MI (2023), and NGV Triennial, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2023). Hayden holds positions on advisory councils at Columbia University School of the Arts, Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, and Cornell College of Architecture Art and Planning. Canadá Habla Españoles una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a promover y preservar el idioma español en Canadá. Su mandato de responsabilidad social se extiende al apoyo al desarrollo educativo, sociocultural y empresarial de los miembros dentro de las comunidades de habla hispana. En esta oportunidad estamos muy felices de presentar el Taller de Escritura Creativa: “La cavidad de las historias: diseño de personaje e identidades discursivas” de la mano de la escritora Elaine Vilar Madruga A la hora de construir una historia, de escribir una novela o un relato, estas son siempre las preguntas que me hago, las preguntas que, como autora, me obsesionan: ¿a qué le prestamos real atención a la hora de escribir? ¿Cuáles son los ejes que verdaderamente conectan con el corazón de las lectoras y con el mundo de las ideas de los otros? ¿Cómo discursamos y armamos un personaje? ¿Le prestamos el suficiente cuidado al diseño de personaje, a su cuerpo, a su lengua, a su memoria fragmentada, a su memoria emotiva, a sus opresiones históricas, a sus fobias? ¿Le prestamos atención a nuestro propio cuerpo o lengua, a nuestra memoria fragmentada, a nuestra memoria emotiva, a nuestras opresiones históricas y fobias como autoras? ¿Cómo resaltar lo atípico dentro del universo de influencias en una obra? Tal vez estas sean también tus preguntas, y juntas podamos sentarnos a pensar en cómo construir una historia, el mundo que habita nuestro personaje, y el personaje que habita en este mundo narrativo. Es considerada una de las voces literarias más importantes de la Cuba y el Caribe actuales. Profesora de música y de escritura creativa, artista multidisciplinaria, editora y coach literario. Licenciada en Arte Teatral, especialidad Dramaturgia, por el Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). Ganadora de más de un centenar de premios nacionales e internacionales. Ha publicado más de cincuenta libros en editoriales de Estados Unidos, Canadá, Cuba, República Dominicana, España, Chile, Francia, Italia, México, Colombia, Dinamarca, Panamá, Brasil y Rusia, entre los que destacan la novela Salomé (La Pollera, Chile, 2018), el poemario Sakura (Libero, España, 2021; Desbordes, Chile, 2016) y la novela para niños Un globo rojo en tu ventana (Edebé, México, 2021). Cultiva los géneros de novela, cuento, poesía, literatura fantástica y de ciencia-ficción, periodismo, crítica, teatro, literatura para niños y jóvenes. Su libro La tiranía de las moscas obtuvo el Premio Cálamo como Mejor Libro del Año 2021 y fue nominada al Premio Finestres de Narrativa y fue traducido a varios idiomas. En 2023 se lanzó en España su novela El cielo de la selva, publicada en Barcelona por Lava Editorial, la cual ha sido acogida con éxito por la crítica especializada y los lectores con cinco ediciones agotadas en un solo año. Mereció el Premio Nollegiu a la Mejor Novela del Año en Español y fue parte de la Shortlist del Premio Finestres de Narrativa en Castellano. Además de esto, fue elegida entre los 10 mejores libros del año por el suplemento cultural Babelia, del periódico El País. Su más reciente novela Las cavidades (Bookmate, México) se publicó dentro de la colección Bookmate Originals. Fue residente de la beca de escritura “Montserrat Roig” 2023 en Barcelona y ganadora de una de las Spring 2024 Fellowship Awards que otorga Bogliasco Foundation en Italia, entre otros. En la actualidad combina el ejercicio de la docencia creativa con la escritura de su próxima novela, La piel hembra, que se publicará en España a finales del 2024.
