Please note this a repeat of the Tour that took place on the 25 July 2024. The exhibition tells the story of a father and son from Sheffield whose passion for prints led them to develop an outstanding collection, including works by Jacques Callot, Rembrandt, Edouard Manet, Odilon Redon, and more. David Alston will chart their story began and share insights into works on display, with a specific focus on Odilon Redon. This is the second in a series of three talks exploring A Passion for Prints’ changing focus displays. This tour forms part of the programme of events complementing the exhibition A Passion for Prints: A Sheffield Collection, which continues at the Graves Gallery until December 2024. As Deputy Director of Arts for Sheffield City Council, David led the City Art Galleries in the 1990s, before becoming the Keeper of Art in the National Museum of Wales. He left Wales to become Galleries Director for the millennium project of The Lowry on Salford Quays, returning to Wales to be Arts Director for the Arts Council of Wales. He was awarded an MBE in 2020 for services to the Arts. His family base has been Sheffield since the 1980s when he arrived in the city to be the first Assistant Curator for the Ruskin Collection. This will be a special opportunity for Chowdhary to respond directly to the works around her and share an insight into the exhibition, with plenty of time for audience questions. Lubna Chowdhary has been shortlisted for the Jerwood Prize in Ceramics, the Annual Freelands Foundation Award, the Juda Foundation Award and the Paul Hamlyn Award. She has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, UK, PEER Gallery, London, UK and group exhibitions at Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE, and Hayward Gallery, London, UK. Her work has been included in the Kochi Biennale, India and the Islamic Art Biennale, Jeddah. In addition to her residency at the V&A, she has completed further artists residencies at Camden Arts Centre, IASPIS Stockholm and Mahler & Lewitt, Italy. She is represented by Jhaveri Contemporary. An avid art collector, he amassed an astounding 3000 pictures throughout his lifetime and gave 700 of those to the city collection. This workshop will focus on worldbuilding in fantasy fiction.We'll explore what makes fantasy worlds come alive and how to go about crafting them, from the big picture right down to the details. The session will include guided discussions and practical exercises to unlock imagination and write coherent, immersive fantasy worlds. The workshop is suitable for beginner and intermediate writers, whether you're taking the very first steps in your fantasy writing journey, or you've a world in mind that you'd like to deepen and develop. Jools Warner is a novelist based in Sheffield. She writes fantasy for adults, and spooky stuff for younger readers. She did an MA in Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University, graduating in 2022 with Distinction. Her debut novel Ernie and the Mage-Killer was published in 2024 by Bellows Press, and she is working on the sequel.
