Art in Berlin 1880 – 1980. From the Collection | Berlin
Jan 1, 2023–Dec 31, 2026 (UTC+1)
Berlin
The Berlinische Galerie has devoted over 1000 square metres to presenting its collection. Waiting to be discovered among the roughly 250 works on show are paintings, prints, photographs, architecture and archive materials rarely or never displayed before.
Walking around this exhibition is like time travel and takes visitors through Berlin in 17 chapters: the Kaiser’s era, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi dictatorship, the new beginnings after 1945, Cold War in the divided city, and the counter-cultures and unconventional lifestyles that evolved in East and West under the shadow of the Wall. In East Berlin, an alternative art community developed from the late 1970s. In West Berlin from the late 1970s, aggressive art by the “Neue Wilden” placed the divided city back in the international limelight.
LAS presents: Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg: Pollinator Pathmaker | Berlin
Jun 20, 2023–Nov 1, 2026 (UTC+1)
Berlin
LAS Art Foundation is pleased to present Pollinator Pathmaker, a living artwork and participatory project conceived by artist Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg. This impactful initiative in interspecies art uses algorithmic technology to generate planting schemes for gardens, computed to support the greatest diversity of pollinating insects possible. It signals a shift toward the post-anthropocentric thinking necessary to face the current climate and biodiversity crises, and toward the non-human aesthetics and experimental formats that pave the way. Ambitious and future-minded, it is exemplary of how art can act as a driver for change, and offer new perspectives on our shared planet.
Growing in the forecourt of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, the LAS- commissioned garden will be the first edition outside of the UK. LAS has committed to amplifying Pollinator Pathmaker’s impact by undertaking an extensive public campaign, which calls upon local communities, hobby gardeners and activists to get involved in pollinator protection by planting their own version of the artwork – what the artist refers to as DIY Editions – via Ginsberg’s free online tool: www.pollinator.art.
Responding to the alarming decline in pollinator populations in recent decades, Ginsberg has worked with horticulturalists, pollinator experts and an AI scientist to devise an algorithmic tool that designs bespoke gardens for pollinating insects. Supported by the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, the LAS Edition will be customised for Continental Europe, and will feature more than 7,000 plants of 80 different varieties, planted over a 722-square-metre plot.

The exhibition is aimed at gamers of all ages, but also at visitors who have little experience with computer games.
The fact that computer games have developed into a leading medium is no longer a daring thesis. The social and aesthetic significance of the interactive and multimedia medium can no longer be overlooked. The computer game has freed itself from its origins as a laboratory experiment and toy and has become "the" medium of digital society, somewhere between pop culture, entertainment and art.
With the opening of the exhibition »The World of Games« in the fall of 1997, the ZKM was one of the first art institutions worldwide to give video game culture a permanent public platform in an art context. Since then, the ZKM has repeatedly reshaped the presentation of games in a series of different exhibitions.
Embracing Modernism: Big names from the Stadtmuseum Berlin | Karlsruhe
Oct 7, 2022–Sep 30, 2026 (UTC+1)
Karlsruhe
Twelve highlights from its premium collection will be guests at the Berlinische Galerie from October 2022. They bring new tones to the permanent in-house exhibition, sparking a conversation with resident works.
Sharing collections and jointly making them accessible to the public must become standard museum practice in the future. In this instance, the partnership was prompted by extensive conversion work at the Märkisches Museum, which is scheduled to close for four years in 2023, leaving the foundation Stadtmuseum Berlin without its principal home. To ensure that significant paintings from its collection can remain on display, the idea was born in the two houses of integrating selected works into the permanent exhibition “Art in Berlin 1880-1980”. Early modern art is a particular strength of the Stadtmuseum Berlin holdings.
The paintings to be hosted at the Berlinische Galerie are by Max Beckmann, Theo von Brockhusen, Lovis Corinth, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Walter Leistikow, Max Liebermann, Edvard Munch and Lesser Ury. All of them were important figures who enriched the city’s art scene in the early 20th century.

David Gerstein turns 80 | 2024 FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE | Nuremberg
Feb 4–Dec 31, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Nuremberg
Tel Aviv/Kitzbuehel/Nuernberg 03.02.2024
The isralian artist David Gerstein celebrates his 80th birthday in 2024. FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE with locations in Kitzbühel/Austria and Nuremberg/Germany congratulates him wholeheartedly on this occasion.
David Gerstein was born in Jerusalem (Israel) in November 1944. He lives and works near Tel Aviv. Gerstein is an established and internationally renowned artist. His works of art can be found in numerous museums worldwide. In recent years, many cities have purchased monumental outdoor sculptures for parks or gardens, such as Singapore with the over 4 meter high sculpture "Momentum".Trained on several continents (Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Art Student League in New York and St Martin's School of Art in London), David Gerstein has developed a hybrid practice and aesthetic over the course of his 50-year career; at the intersection of Pop Art, Minimalism and Optical Art, reflecting this pluralistic and cosmopolitan dimension: a vibrant creation. His approach is characterized by the cutting out of shapes and figures; an approach that he associates with his childhood and youth, when he helped his father in his father's leather tailoring business. Equally central is the color, which becomes increasingly bold and pop and gives the works movement. These wall sculptures, mostly cut out of aluminum and consisting of several layers, are reminiscent of the cutouts and steelcuts of his artist colleagues Tom Wesselmann or Alex Katz.David Gerstein cuts out and paints steel and aluminum to embed his figures and scenes in three-dimensional structures and wall designs that are both unchanging and pulsating. The "pictures" and compositions he creates are taken from the world of childhood, everyday life, family, sport, music, city life, the animal and plant world. The various layers are mounted on the wall at intervals of around 5 cm, allowing views from different perspectives. Similar to Alex Katz's cutouts, which can be purchased at FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE, they cast shadows and graphic patterns on the wall and thus merge with the space in which they are exhibited.David Gerstein's monumental works in public space include his sculptures for the Hsinchu Stadium in Taiwan (2002); his exhibitions at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1985, 1999 and 2003); his Presence-Present project for the Jerusalem Biennale of Jewish Contemporary Art (2015); or more recently (2017) his sculptures for the National Park in Guizhou Province, China. His works have also been exhibited at the Ramat-Gan Museum, the Performing Arts Center in Tel Aviv, the Ashod Museum of Art, the MoBY (Museums of Bat Yam), the Haifa Museum of Contemporary Art.In 1970, David Gerstein worked for ten years with figurative art in painting. Then he tried to find another way to express his ideas, which was something more personal. His choice was to get as close as possible to sculpture while maintaining his identity as a painter. The trigger for the change from painting to wall sculpture was the artist's visit to the retrospective of Franck Stella at the MOMA in New York in 1987. He understood the importance of sculpture, movement, volumes and reliefs. From then on, he decided on a new artistic direction, the one that would make him famous and successful worldwide: Wall sculpture.Countless shows and exhibitions by David Gerstein have followed all over the world to this day. Naturally accompanied by awards and prizes all over the world. Like many artists, David Gerstein is still active today. He now lives and works near Tel Aviv in Israel, as does the artist Orit Fuchs, who is represented internationally by gallery owner Frank Fluegel.Since then, David Gerstein's artworks have experienced a solid price development. Due to the large number of museums and collections that have bought his artworks over the years, they have always remained stable in value."I am a painter by nature. Even though I create works that come close to sculpture, I think of them as paintings," says David Gerstein in an interview in 2018.
At first he carved from wood, but in the early 1980s, when laser technology became widespread, he used steel. From then on, this was a revolution in his work. He eventually succeeded in creating his wall sculptures in metal, which are now his trademark. David Gerstein manages to create shadow play and superimpositions with the material and surprise the collector! The wall sculptures are created from a preliminary drawing. This drawing is processed by computer so that the metal can be cut out with a laser. All sculptures are painted by hand with car body paint, which is why they look so shiny. This perfect preservation is one of the reasons why David Gerstein's artworks retain their value so well. Unlike prints on paper, they are insensitive and not subject to natural ageing. Now in 2024, when the artist David Gerstein is celebrating his 80th birthday, he says: "The older I get, the younger the colors become. I want to convey a philosophy of making pictures happier, more colorful and more cheerful."
FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE, with locations in Nuremberg and Kitzbuehel, has focused on high-quality originals of pop art, street art and contemporary art for over twenty years. The art collector will find original artworks, prints and unique pieces by hip and up-and-coming artists such as Adam Handler, Katherine Bernhardt, Sol Felpeto, Jon Burgerman, Alex Katz, David Shrigley, Kenny Scharf, Hunt Slonem, Orit Fuchs, Nathan Paddison, Fanny Brodar and Julian Opie at fair market prices. Of course, editions and paintings by highly sought-after and valuable artists such as Andy Warhol, Mel Ramos, Roy Lichtenstein, Harland Miller, Tom Wesselmann, Sean Scully, Gerhard Richter, Ross Bleckner, Allen Jones, Thomas Ruff and Mel Bochner are also on sale. The artists David Gerstein, Peter Doig, Jeff Koons, Tracey Emin, Raqib Shaw, Derrick Adams and Robert Longo, who are popular with collectors worldwide, are also represented in the portfolio of the internationally renowned gallery. The rapidly growing street art segment is perfectly complemented by successful artists such as Mr. Brainwash (Thierry Guetta), XOOOOX, Punk Me Tender, BAMBI, Fringe the Artist, Max Mavior and John Crash Matos.Of course, the owner-managed gallery also offers design objects, paintings and vintage furniture by Maurizio Cattelan, Paul Smith, Richard Orlinski, Philippe Starck and Pierre Jeanerette.Exhibitions are held at regular intervals in the centrally located gallery spaces in Nuremberg and Kitzbuehel. Collectors can buy works of art around the clock in the unique online store. International trade fair participations and solo shows round off the program of the renowned gallery. Many of the artworks on offer can be purchased immediately by the collector during a visit to the gallery, as they are in stock. Due to the high demand for some artists, prices are expected to rise. Works can rise in price (this development in value is very desirable for investors) and old prices can lose their validity.

Luisa Baldhuber. Afterglow | Munich
Feb 23–Dec 15, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Munich
“Afterglow", by artist Luisa Baldhuber (b. 1994, Munich), references the design of Munich’s English Garden and transposes it as an installation composed of light and wall painting in the staff entrance of Haus der Kunst. The English landscape gardens of the 18th and 19th centuries reflected the principle of a natural landscape. Despite their intended closeness to nature, these gardens are ultimately artificial parks, based on the aesthetic of landscape painting and an idealised view of nature. In this sense, the English Garden also stands for the human desire and need for a natural landscape in an increasingly industrialised and technological environment. The sharp contrast between the “wild” and romantic natural park and the Neoclassical architecture of Haus der Kunst, built at the time of National Socialism, will also be consciously addressed in the installation “Afterglow".
Baldhuber’s expansive installations, in which the artist works with the interaction of coloured light and wall paint, are aimed at overcoming the spatial boundaries of an architectural space. In doing so, she draws attention to the original architecture, questioning notions of our world that manifest themselves in buildings. The abstract ceiling picture for instance takes up the minimalistic style of the Light and Space movement that originated in Southern California in the 1960s, which is an important reference in Baldhuber’s artistic work. Through the optical expansion of the space and the shifting coloured moods, “Afterglow” rouses memories of being under the open sky and lets us dream for a moment.

Science Fiction: Design From Space Age to Metaverse | Weil am Rhein
May 18, 2024–May 11, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Weil am Rhein
The fascinating dialogue between science fiction and design is the subject of a new exhibition in the Vitra Schaudepot. Under the title »Science Fiction Design: From Space Age to Metaverse«, over 100 objects from the museum’s collection will be staged in a futuristic display by the Argentine visual artist and designer Andrés Reisinger. Supplemented by selected works from the realms of film and literature, the show presents a range of examples from the early twentieth century to the so-called Space Age of the 1960s and ’70s, and even further to recent design objects that have been conceived exclusively for the virtual worlds of the metaverse.
The literary genre of science fiction first became popular in the nineteenth century, when the sudden rise of technology during the Industrial Age inspired authors such as Mary Shelley and Jules Verne to imagine how the era’s urgent issues would play out in a future fictional world. From the outset, the genre focused on the central questions of humankind – touching on love, war and death in the context of time and space travel, or under the risks and opportunities of new technologies. With the advent of moving pictures, science fiction was soon adopted as a major cinematic theme. This is demonstrated in the exhibition by one of the seminal early works in the history of film: in A Trip to the Moon from the year 1902, the French director Georges Meliès envisioned the flight of a rocket to the moon, resulting in the archetypical science fiction movie. Over the following decades, science fiction not only experienced a quick ascent in the film industry, but also generated new forms in the literary and graphic arts, such as comics and pulp magazines that reached a global fan base with garish covers and stories penned by renowned authors like Isaac Asimov, Stanislaw Lem and H.G. Wells.
What was first anticipated by science fiction started to become a reality in the 1950s: the first satellites were shot into space, aerospace technology experienced rapid advancement, and the two Cold War superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, engaged in a moon race that captivated the entire world like a suspense novel. The Space Age also found manifold expression in the realm of design.
Designers such as Gae Aulenti, Eero Aarnio, Luigi Colani, Joe Colombo and Verner Panton created furnishings and living environments whose organic shapes and shiny plastic surfaces not only looked futuristic, but also reflected a fundamental rethinking of modern lifestyles. Finding inspiration in the technology of space travel, the designers of the Space Age supplied film directors with the ideal furnishings for their science fiction movies. Designer furniture surged on the silver screen: Olivier Mourgue’s Djinn seating series in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968); Eero Aarnio’s Tomato Chair in Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black (1997); Pierre Paulin’s Ribbon Chair in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 (2017), to name a few.
The dialogue between science fiction and design persisted into the following decades. Iconic designs continued to appear in science fiction films, such as Marc Newson’s Orgone Chair in Prometheus (2012) – along with unexpected examples like Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Argyle Chair (1897) in Blade Runner (1982). In this respect, science fiction has proven to be a multifaceted genre that also addresses controversial topics such as climate change and artificial intelligence. The new possibilities enabled by computer-aided design and 3D printing have contributed to the revival of a futuristic aesthetic, from which new classics have emerged, such as Joris Laarman’s Aluminum Gradient Chair (2013), the first 3D-printed metal chair.
In light of the current space exploration efforts, there is talk of a Second Space Age. This raises questions about how the dialogue between science fiction and design is progressing today, and what it might look like in the future. Applying innovative technologies to pressing social problems and challenges is just one conceivable scenario. The other is the metaverse, which, for a new generation of young designers, appears to be evolving into what the cosmos represented in the 1960s – a new space for projections and experiments, a place for free thinking that can be filled with novel ideas and concepts. As an example of this approach, the exhibition also features works by Andrés Reisinger, currently one of the most prominent figures creating and designing for both the physical realm and the metaverse. Reisinger’s digital artworks, often featuring furniture, are marketed as NFTs and attain high attention. His perfectly staged dreamscapes give expression to the aesthetic preferences and sensibilities of a digital generation, while clearly referencing the imagery of earlier science fiction films. On display in the show are Reisinger’s Shipping Series (2021) and his Hortensia Chair (2018), the latter a playful and simultaneously futuristic object that the artist and designer initially developed as an NFT before producing it as an actual piece of furniture. The creative direction of the exhibition has also been entrusted to Andrés Reisinger.

Glamour and History. 40 Years of P1 | Munich
Jun 21, 2024–Feb 23, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Munich
Established in 1950 as a “studio restaurant” and venue for the Munich art scene in the east wing of Haus der Kunst, P1 has developed into one of the most desirable locations in the club landscape in Germany since the mid-1980s. Whitney Houston's first concert in front of a European audience, a party for Tina Turner where counterfeit D-Mark notes rained from the ceiling, footballers in love, scandals, and spectacular celebrations – there are countless stories about P1. On the occasion of its 40th anniversary – the restaurant was opened in its current form in 1984 – Haus der Kunst now dedicates an exhibition to the club as part of the “Archives in Residence” exhibition series.
P1 is one of the few clubs, if not the only nightspot, that lives next door to an art exhibition house. Not unlike Haus der Kunst, P1 continually reinvents itself. To this day, it is an essential part of international club culture and a popular destination for different generations of night owls.
Clubs are spaces for artistic expression and experimentation, places for participation and identity formation, venues for encounters and desire. Sound and lighting, dance floor, and lounging area create open spaces in which guests are transported from the real world of everyday life into their own reality of an endless night.
The exhibition in the Archiv Galerie of Haus der Kunst, which was developed on the basis of archive material, also opens up such a world to visitors. The design of the room is, on the one hand, a reminiscence of the initial location. On the other hand, the room elements are based on the minimalist design of the Milanese designer Matteo Thun, who designed the club in the 2000s.
The idea of participation continues – retrospectively – in the exhibition. Haus der Kunst invites visitors to share their personal P1 stories and memorabilia and thus expand the exhibition digitally. As part of the exhibition, a magazine about P1 and its history and stories will be published.

Under the Surface | Berlin
Jun 28–Aug 23, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Berlin
In summertime, a magical atmosphere unfolds that slows down the pulse of everyday life and creates space for the poetry of life. The long days stretch out over the world with a golden brushstroke. A sense of freedom and possibility weaves through the air as people break their usual rhythm and immerse themselves in the promise of holidays.
Kang Contemporary tunes into the feeling of summer and wants to express the diversity of its creativity. In ‘Under the Surface’, the gallery becomes an open stage in which art enters into dialogue with the summery feelings of the city: Sabine Laidig, Mile Saula, Gudrun Petersdorff, Katrin von Lehmann and Lisa Glauer use painting and drawing in very different ways to trace the sensory and imaginative qualities of two-dimensional media. At the centre of their positions at the interface of abstract art, landscape painting and artistic research is art as a shimmering medium of experience that appeals to the senses. Behind the sensually appealing surfaces of the works lies a profound examination of their artistic subjects.
