To be a client of Gwendolyn Montgomery—New York’s most powerful publicist, at Sublime Creative—is to be infused with a certain oomph, a mysterious glamour. She seems to have created the ideal life with her handsome new boyfriend, the perfect match. But Gwendolyn has a legion of long-buried secrets that could unravel everything. After a grisly, bizarre incident at the Brooklyn Museum, Gwendolyn begins to realize that something nefarious is happening tied directly to her past, right as Fonsi Harewood comes back into her world. Fonsi is a queer Latinx psychic from the South Bronx who’s caught up in a love triangle with a ghost and his mortal ex. He’s able to communicate with the dead, and he comes with a dire warning for Gwendolyn, that the barrier between humans and spirits is weakening. Gwendolyn would prefer not to have anything to do with ghostly drama. Yet in order to get to the bottom of the spookiness derailing her life and threatening the world, she must face the demons she’d long left behind. The Ghosts of Gwendolyn Montgomery is a sensuous, funny, mystical adventure that will leave you spellbound as you keep the pages turning. Photo credit: Erin Patrice O’Brien Clarence A. Pre Event Reception starts one hour before the screening at 4:30pm. Post screening Q&A with director Raam Reddy in attendance. Opening Night: The Fable Synopsis: Spring, 1989. Dev and his family live atop a cliff in an old colonial mansion in the picturesque Indian Himalayas. Dev spends his mornings clamping on hand-made bird wings and jumping off the cliff for a morning flight. His son Juju runs about with their two mountain dogs while his beautiful wife Nandini perfects her mulberry jam. One bright morning, their teenage daughter Vanya surprises them by returning early from her boarding school for the summer holidays. Re-united, the family spends joyous nights, watching old films and counting stars. Dev owns a sprawling 5000 acre estate of fruit orchards, which he inherited from his grandfather, who was gifted the estate by British invaders for his decades of loyal service. The orchards would come into bloom every march, and yield the sweetest fruits every May. One day on a casual walk, Dev suddenly stumbles upon an apple tree that is mysteriously burnt. A few days later, several trees are burnt. At a loss, Dev orders Mohan, the manager of the estate, to begin investigating in the surrounding villages. Doubts fester as gossip floats. Some of the orchard workers suspect a group of meditative nomads who are passing through the area. A corrupt sheriff enters the fray, while loyal men camp out in the orchards keeping a deligent watch. Regardless of their efforts, on a quiet night, a massive fire erupts, engulfing an entire mountain side. Struggling for answer, Dev turns to both guns and silence. Deep in the darkness, in the silence of the night, answers begin to emerge. Will Dev finally realise who he and his family really are? Film
Manthan Director : Shyam Benegal Starring : Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad Run time : 2 hours 14 mins Language : Hindi Year Made : 1984 Country : India Synopsis: “Manthan” is a powerful film about the tempestuous winds of change that blow through a village when Dr. Rao (Girish Karnad) an idealistic veterinary surgeon from the city arrives to work with the locals to start a milk cooperative movement. The villagers, half of whom are Dalits, sell their milk to a local businessman Mishraji (Amrish Puri) who cheats them by paying a very low rate for the milk. The village headman (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), an upper caste man, is opposed to the idea as he does not want his higher social status diminished as is Bhola (Naseerudin Shah), the leader of the Dalits. He faces stiff resistance from the village headman (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) and Mishraji, the exploitative dairy owner, insecure about losing their power to a cooperative, Bhola (Naseeruddin Shah), a lower-caste peasant who views the city dweller with suspicion and Bindu (Smita Patil), a feisty milkmaid whose initial misgivings about the doctor blossoms into liking and support for his initiative. His notions of equitable distribution of profits irrespective of class and caste and freedom from exploitative middlemen, churn up a maelstrom of mistrust, anger and resistance among the feudal landlords and the peasants, threatening the deep-rooted social hierarchy based on generations of discrimination. When Dr. Rao assures fair payment to the villagers for their milk and starts earning their trust, this irks Mishraji who starts plotting against him. The politics in the village escalates and Bhola defeats the Sarpanch in the elections to become the village headman. The sidelined Pramukh conspires with Mishraji against Dr. Rao. Aided by Bindu’s husband, they force her to make an allegation in the Panchayat that Dr. Rao has raped her. Extremely saddened by the turn of events, Dr. Rao decides to complete the remaining work of the co-operative and leave the village. Bhola however carries on the work with the help of villagers, notably Bindu, yielding fruit to the brave efforts of Dr. Rao. The story plumbs the depths of despair as Dr. Rao faces false accusations and village politics, but ends on a high with a glimmering of hope as Bhola and Bindu continue the work begun by Dr. Rao as the idea of the cooperative slowly takes root. Uttam’s father, Baba, died on duty eight years ago, leaving Ma lonely and yearning for connection. Uttam, however, dismisses her as a simple homemaker, ignoring her intelligence and her past contributions to Baba’s cases. Their strained relationship deepens her isolation. When 19-year-old Ishita, a talented girl, is found dead in her PG, Uttam joins the inexperienced police team tasked with solving the murder. The ruling party, eager to promote Shottipur as a tourist haven of honest folk, pressures Uttam’s boss, Tamang, to close the case in two weeks—preferably as a suicide—before the launch. Ma sees this as a chance to bridge the gap with Uttam. She logically debunks the suicide theory, impressing Tamang, who was Baba’s trainee and admired her skills. So, he recruits Ma to assist. As Ma shines in the investigation, Uttam stubbornly refuses to acknowledge her worth. Then a second murder happens —of someone close to Ma, making things personal. With days left, a seasoned detective, Bondo, takes over, barring Ma from the station. Undeterred, Ma pursues the killer alone, risking her life, while Uttam remains at odds with her. Will Ma unmask the murderer? Will Uttam finally see her for the brilliant woman she is? She hates the commerce that overshadows the art each day and life here in general. It is her deepest dream to move abroad to any part of Europe and do Shakespeare. She ends up at an online audition with Adnan, a 55 year old Kashmiri Muslim man, who’s now a retired banker living in Frankfurt, Germany.Adnan is depressed and having just retired he’s desperately seeking a new sense of self. After the audition in which Mouni improvises to make Adnan react genuinely, they're both shortlisted. Shocked with the power of acting, he begs her to teach him. This sets off a day long acting class between two countries and two very different people over a long video call. It unravels their pasts, their fears, their pains and joys and leaves them changed. Like any good acting class should. We explore both Mumbai, dirty, grimy, soiled, dark, dense, intense and Frankfurt, squeaky clean, bright, colorful and as we see with the people, so also we see with the cities, that at the heart they're very similar. But acting is psychology. And now they both must learn to be vulnerable. To trust. Aditya Kripalani is a writer, director, and producer based in Frankfurt, Germany. She’s one of the most coveted songwriters in LA…and she can’t seem to write. There’s an emptiness inside her, and nothing seems to fill it. When she returns to her hometown of Vienna Shores, North Carolina, she hopes that the sand, the surf, and the concerts at The Revelry, her family’s music venue, will spark her inspiration. But when she gets there, nothing is how she left it. Her best friend is avoiding her, her mother’s memories are fading fast, and The Revelry is closing. How can she think about writing her next song when everything is changing without her? Until she hears it. A melody in her head, lyric-less and half-formed, and an alluring and addictive voice to go with it—belonging, apparently, to a wry musician with hangups of his own. Surely, he’s a figment of her overworked imagination. But then the very real man attached to the voice shows up in Vienna Shores. Feeling overwhelmed with grief, Farah clings onto her late husband’s memories. Under threat of her home being uprooted by the prospect of a new buyer, Farah finds a new lease of life when she discovers the saplings her husband brought to their kitchen garden. Just as she is done planting them, she discovers small rat droppings around the garden. With this Farah dives deep into a point of no return as she dedicates her life towards protecting the saplings at the cost of affecting her sanity. Orphanage of Memories is a protest against how the average Indian views Kashmir in movies - where the focus is always on the landscape and never on the people. We were keen on telling the story of an individual and not the serenity of Kashmir. This is precisely why we chose to set the story in the harshest part of winter, before snowfall starts - when the whole valley is engulfed in a blanket of deary gray monotones. Director: Rayit Hashmat Qazi Rayit Hashmat Qazi is an independent filmmaker from Kashmir, who is currently working in Mumbai, India. He has worked as an assistant to International as well as Indian directors on TVC’s for the last 6 years. From Jim Sonzero to Rob Cohen and Harvey Brown, Rayit has been a right hand to a wide array of filmmakers while working with Bang Bang Films on brands as diverse as AIRTEL, Tanishq, Britannia, Pepsi, Loreal, etc. In addition to this Rayit has worked as an assistant director on the critically acclaimed Mukti Bhawan that went on to premiere at the Venice Film Festival amongst other international film festival giants. This experience was instrumental in helping him transition from assisting to directing ads of his own. But lately, Alistair has been traveling more and more frequently for work, disappearing for days at a time. When Martha questions him about his frequent absences, he always has a legitimate explanation, but Martha can’t share the feeling that something isn't right. “You know that’s mad, don’t you? I’m your husband. We know everything there is to know about each other.” Nina, Martha, and Ash are on a collision course with a shocking truth that is far darker than anyone could have imagined. And all three are about to wish they had heeded the same warning: Don’t let him in. But the past won’t stay buried forever.
