Arresting Beauty: Julia Margaret Cameron | The Morgan Library & Museum

May 30–Sep 14, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Exhibitions
Arresting Beauty: Julia Margaret Cameron explores the path-breaking career of photography’s first widely recognized artist. Cameron (1815–1879) was born in Calcutta to a French mother and an English father; in 1848, with her husband and children, she moved to England, where her sisters introduced her to the elite cultural circles in which they traveled. Residing on the Isle of Wight, where she was close neighbors with the poet Alfred Tennyson, Cameron acquired her first camera at age 48. In only eleven years she would create thousands of exposures and leave an enduring image of the Victorian era as an age of intellectual and spiritual ambition. Her own prodigious drive helped Cameron become a probing portraitist of leading figures such as Tennyson, Thomas Carlyle, G.F. Watts, and Charles Darwin, while her absorption with fine art, notably Renaissance painting, led her to create staged tableaux in a mode that has been perpetually rediscovered by photographers down to the present. Most distinct of all was Cameron’s wholly personal handling of her medium. Heedless of a large camera’s technical limitations, alert to the happy effects of accident, and indifferent to critical scorn, she embraced a style of spontaneous intimacy that distanced her from the photographic establishment of her time and class. Motion blur, highly selective focus, and even fingerprints on the glass negatives (which required developing before their emulsions dried) are among the idiosyncrasies of her singular oeuvre. Cameron was quick to exploit publishing and promotional opportunities: at London’s South Kensington Museum (today the Victoria & Albert Museum) she secured not only an exhibition in 1865 but, a few years later, studio space, and she was the first photographic artist to be collected by the institution. Arresting Beauty features prints from its initial purchase and from subsequent additions to its holdings, which have grown to number nearly one thousand. The exhibition includes Cameron’s large if optically primitive lens (all that survives of her apparatus), pages from her memoir manuscript Annals of My Glass House, and portraits she made in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) after Cameron and her husband moved there in 1875.

In-Person Family & Systemic Constellations Workshop with Luisa Muhr (FCNYC) | Balance Arts Center

Jun 5, 2025 (UTC-4)
New York
Cultural Experiences
Please find more information on Family & Systemic Constellations with Luisa Muhr here: www.familyconstellationsnyc.com "Family and Systemic Constellation work is initiating movement deep within the soul. This movement then translates to the practical world." "I empower people who currently feel stuck and seek change, who want to get a deeper understanding of their own social patterns, and are curious about their origins,,by guiding them through healing movements,,deeply rooted in their family system." -- Luisa Muhr What is Family & Systemic Constellation work? Developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the 1990's, Family Constellations is an alternative form of therapy work. With its roots in Zulu traditions, Psychotherapy, Psychodrama, Family Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Virgina Satir's "Sculptures", Primal Therapy, Hypnotherapy, and more, this work in its current incarnation, was first and foremost developed to heal Holocaust trauma in Central and Eastern Europe, but eventually spread across the world and has been applied to pretty much any type of issues and systemic wounds. Constellation work involves a group of people who come together, seated in a circle, offering their awareness and presence and thus creating a, what Constellations Practitioners call, “work field”. It is an energy field and is where the work takes place. In a virtual setting we will explore this field (and its multitudes) in new dimensions. The basic principle of Family Constellations is based on the idea that certain issues and patterns we encounter in our daily lives (either on the surface or in the subconscious) are always somehow connected to and deeply rooted in our ancestry. What often is missing is the awareness of these connections. What to expect? We will break some patterns that have made us feel stuck and focus on some in-depth healing through Family & Systemic Constellations. If you intend to have your own Constellation set up, please bring any major personal issue that you are currently dealing with (doesn't have to be connected to a family issue). There is no guarantee that you will get to have your issue be worked on. One spot will be reserved for one of Muhr's current Constellations trainees , the other will be decided via a drawing system, which leaves the decision of who gets to work up to the energy work field. Please note that no matter if you get to work on your own issue or are participating in the Constellation of someone else, the healing is usually profound for ALL participants in the room. Someone else's issue could speak directly to an issue in your own system, and -- if you are conscious of it or not --usually does. About the Facilitator: Luisa Muhr is a New-York-based interdisciplinary artist and healing arts practitioner, specializing in Family & Systemic Constellations. She is originally from Vienna (Austria), with Hungarian and Anatolian-Greek roots. As the descendant of her great-grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, Constellation work has always played an integral part in Muhr’s life. With now more than 19 years of experience in Family and Systemic Constellations, she was first introduced to Family Constellations, Guided Imagery work (Katathym-imaginative Psychotherapy), and Astrology as a young child through her mother and has been shaped by all of these modalities since. Constellation work was a part of Muhr's life on a monthly to bi-monthly basis, starting when she was 9 years old in her childhood home in Austria, where her mother to this day organizes Constellations workshops. By the time Muhr turned 14 she actively started to participate in Constellations workshops, which were facilitated by her later mentor, Dr. Peter Orban, one of Germany's most prominent Family Constellations facilitators, who was also one of Bert Hellinger's early students. This eventually lead to Muhr completing her Family & Systemic Constellations certification training program with Dr. Orban. Inspired by her mentor, Muhr’s Constellation work can also include a large variety of archetypes (rooted in Carl Jung's teachings). As a Family and Systemic Constellations practitioner she currently works and has worked at OHM Center, MINKA Brooklyn, Balance Arts Center, Maha Rose (all in New York), and Kripalu Center (Massachusetts). Muhr has also been featured on Kimberly Ann Johnson’s renowned "Sex, Birth, Trauma" podcast, amongst others. Additionally, Muhr is a certified Deep Listening® practitioner (after experimental composer and pioneer Pauline Oliveros, by the Center For Deep Listening), combining art and healing work in a profound and fully embodied way. During the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic Muhr started to develop and shape a virtual Constellations platform to continuously provide healing for people around the world, as well as offer her yearly Constellations Training Program. Muhr is holding regular workshops on a large variety of platforms and feels strongly about the importance of offering healing space to diverse, marginalized groups of people. In March 2020 she was scheduled to be a panelist and presenter at University of Michigan, discussing the healing aspects of "Field Work" in the arts/performance practice and in Family Constellation work, which due to the COVID-19 pandemic had to be cancelled. Apart from her work as a healing arts practitioner Muhr is a multi- and interdisciplinary creator and performer, specializing in vocal, movement, performance, installation, and sound art, as well as experimental theater. She also runs New York's leading interdisciplinary womxn and non-binary artists series Women Between Arts (at The New School Glassbox Theater). Muhr has been featured on some of New York's most highly acclaimed stages and venues and tirelessly keeps creating new performance work. She deeply believes in the power of different types of energy Field Work and that healing happens through multiple shapes, forms, and lenses, the arts being one of them, Constellation work another. This workshop will be attended by Muhr's current Family Constellations Training cohort, as part of their training. When AJ moves to Seattle in the early aughts, he’s ready to reinvent himself as a gay Asian man—but his dreams hit reality fast with no friends, no job, and an apartment so far out, “not even lesbians live there.” Then a spilled drink at a bar introduces him to K, a glamorous drag queen; John, a shy gamer; and Steven, a reckless flirt. AJ’s “Boy Luck Club” helps him find love, pride, and belonging—until a brutal attack tests everything they know about friendship and family. Meticulously observed and gorgeously illustrated, Gaysians is a fierce, funny, and tender story of queer resilience and self-discovery. Information Source: Museum of Chinese in America | eventbrite

Fine Art
An exquisite bestiary oracle that combines vintage photographs with animal spirit paintings by the artist Alexandra Eldridge and the Jungian analyst, teacher, and author Sherry Salman. They will be in conversation together followed by a signing. PLEASE NOTE: RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Doors open at 5:30 pm. An exquisite bestiary oracle that combines vintage photographs with animal spirit paintings, imbued with a surrealism that provokes reflection on our deep kinship with all beings. Welcome to a world where humans and animals inhabit each other’s lives in surreal, dreamlike realms of the imagination. The imagery in The Oracle of Rewilding is part of an ancient, primordial story of profound kinship that intimately connects human and animal worlds. This oracle deck and guidebook calls upon us to bring healing in a time when the fate of humans and other earthly creatures is threatened. The oracle gently leads us to consciously cultivate a visionary relationship with the world, a kinship with all things. We must “rewild” ourselves for the preservation of all. The imagined, uncanny, even strange animal/human hybrids in this card deck represent the Trickster at a time of chaos and disruption, and speak to a unity of being and hope. Born of artist parents, Alexandra Eldridge received her BA in Art and literature at Ohio University. She then continued her education at Cambridge University, England, Santa Reparata Graphic Workshop in Florence, Italy, Penland College, and most recently The Photographer’s Formulary in Montana. She co-founded an establishment for the arts, Golgonooza, based upon the philosophies of William Blake. She has had over forty solo shows, and has participated in many group shows throughout the U.S., as well as many international exhibitions. She has exhibited in Paris, London, Belgrade, Ljubljana, New York, California, and Santa Fe. Alexandra has been commissioned to paint murals in the Place de Vosges, Paris, and her work has been used for the cover of twenty four books of poetry. Traveling, as an important part of her inspiration has led her to artist’s residencies on the Island of Elba, Italy, and the Valparaiso Foundation in Almeria, Spain.Art News, Art LTD, Art On Paper, New American Painting, and One Hundred Painter’s of the Southwest are just a few of the publications Alexandra has been featured in. Her work can be found in the collections of William Hurt, Steve Buscemi, and Edie Falco, along with many other prestigious collections. Alexandra is the artist of The Radiant Tarot. Sherry Salman, PhD, LP, is a Jungian analyst, teacher, and author. A founding member and first president of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association, she now serves on the faculty and has contributed to the education of many Jungian analysts and psychotherapists. She was associate editor for three professional journals and is a consultant for the Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism. Salman has published in numerous journals, books, and the popular press. Her latest book, Dreams of Totality, is about symbols and imagination in postmodern life. Salman lives in the Hudson River Valley of New York. Information Source: Rizzoli Bookstore | eventbrite
