From composing for Oscar-nominated films such as The Breadwinner, to captivating audiences at SXSW and The Kennedy Centre, he draws upon a vast range of influences spanning film and chamber music, American folk, and contemporary rock. In Afghanistan, music faces an existential threat, leading to a decreed ban on music performance and musicians encountering life-threatening violence and condemnation. Born into a musical family Murtaza started playing tabla at the age of 7 from his father. At an early age he became a disciple of Ustad Zamir Ahmed Khan of Farukhabad Gharana. Murtaza later became the disciple of the legendary maestro Pandit Kumar Bose of Benaras Gharana. He has performed on multiple international platforms with different genres of music.
