Featured Events in Portrush in October 2024 (June Updated)

In this two hour workshop, award-winning poet Ciarán Hodgers will guide participants through a process of 'animating' our text. Animism is defined as the attribution of a living soul to plants, inanimate objects and natural phenomena . Lying at the heart of folk-practice and indigenous wisdom, we will call on this process through writing prompts and discussion to blur the boundaries between the human and the natural world, so we can explore reciprocity, connection and belonging in our natural environment and help us understand a bit more about what it means to be human existing in and with a living, breathing ecosystem of aliveness. Materials will be provided, there is no prior reading needed and you can be at any level of experience creatively. Please bring something to write on and with like a notebook and pen. Sunday 6 October| 10am - 12noonCost: £10 Join artist Sarah Carrington for a relaxing outdoors walk and sketch around Portrush town centre as part of the SWELL FESTIVAL on Sunday 6 October 2024. A sketch, by its very nature is a rapidly executed freehand drawing done to record scenery or demonstrate ideas. Sketches can be made in any drawing medium, and is an essential practice for artists, in planning and developing concepts or improving visual skills as a student. Sketches represent the essence of drawing: full of life and rhythm. Walk & Sketch takes you on a journey around the beautiful local scenery, to discover or re-discover places, while connecting you physically to the landscape, through the rhythm of your walk and your drawings. By taking the time to stop and look around, to trace lines on a paper while breathing fresh air, you will experience a unique connection to the place, and a sense of well-being. No need for previous artistic knowledge, Sarah will guide you through the first steps. Suitable for ages 18+ years ONLY. Sessions will last approximately 90-120 minutes, depending on weather. WHERE TO MEET: Meet outside Portrush Town Hall on Mark Street. WHAT TO WEAR: Walk & Sketch takes place in around accessible walking area so you can wear basic walking shoes, or trainers. Make sure to bring waterproof and warm clothing, as we will spend one to two hours outside. WHAT TO BRING: a small backpack with water and snacks, and your art material (sketchpad, pencils, sharpener, rubber are the essential or/ and any other medium you would like to use, such as ink, charcoal, markers, watercolour, colour pencils…). You can bring a bunch of papers (a minimum of 10 pages) stapled together if you don’t have a sketchpad, but remember to take a hard surface such as an A4 piece of solid cardboard and clips to keep your paper down. Golf Ireland are incredibly excited to invite you to attend our Halloween Girls Golf Festival at Royal Portrush Golf Club. This festival is open to all girls under the age of 18 (as of January 1st 2024). Players do not require a handicap index to take part. Charlene Reid PGA will lead the session with the help of the Golf Ireland team. The event will consist of a coaching clinic, with skills and drills and lots more! This will then be followed by a scramble on the par-3 Curran course. The girls will then enjoy food together in the Clubhouse. * Please bring water and a snack for your bag* Fancy dress optional, but there may be spot prizes available for best halloween costume! (Please note, we will be outside so approproate clothing for the weather conditions should be worn) Coaching, Lunch and Golf Ireland goodies are all included in your entry.
