Reading Seamus Heaney: Wintering Out | Seamus Heaney Centre, 38-40 University Road
Nov 21, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Belfast
Reading Seamus Heaney is a new series of public talks and group discussions that will look at the twelve main poetry collections published by Seamus Heaney between 1966 and 2010. Beginning with Death of a Naturalist from 1966, we will read one book of poems on the third Thursday of each month, guided by Seamus Heaney Centre staff, visiting writers and other guests. By looking at entire poetry collections, participants will gain an appreciation of how Heaney’s poetic technique developed in response to the world around him: the world of his family and friends, his literary influences and the turbulent social and political context for his writing. The Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s holds a unique archive of broadcast materials, both television and radio, relating to the poet’s life and work. These recordings will be used to illuminate the discussions and provide context for the work we will be reading. Special Collections holds a wide range of notebooks and manuscripts, which will also play a role in our discussions of poetic development and writing technique. With no specialist knowledge of poetry required, you can expect to acquire an understanding of Heaney’s idea that he wanted to ‘take the English lyric and make it eat stuff that it has never eaten before.’

Bystander training is an effective way to empower people to address and prevent harassment and discrimination in a workspace. It equips workers with the right knowledge, tools and motivation to intervene safely and stop inappropriate behaviour before it rises to the level of unlawful harassment. These in-person workshops, designed for artists and arts workers in the arts and creative sectors in Ireland, are led by Professor Louise Crowley, Professor of Law at UCC and Director of the UCC Bystander Intervention Programme, and leading policy analyst and consultant Olwen Dawe, who has an established track record in developing and implementing equality, diversity and inclusion projects. Date & time: Fri 22 November 2024, 10am - 1pm Location: Clayton Hotel, Belfast Duration: 3 hours, including a short tea break Cost: Free of charge for anyone working in the arts and creative sectors in Ireland Participant feedback from past workshops: ‘It was excellent training. Clear and well delivered.’ ‘I felt positive about having a room full of people giving up their time to make the industry better. It felt hopeful.’ ‘It was thought provoking and engaging. The use of scenarios was particularly effective.’ ‘Clear strategies to deal with bullying/toxic behaviour, a frank and forthright presentation, and very useful real-world examples to interrogate how I feel I would have responded in the past versus what I could do in the future.’ ‘Great to do it in person. Very lively and informative’
