Experience the exhilarating Run Wild Trail Run on May 18, 2024, in the picturesque river valley of River Ridge Trails, located north of Langham, Saskatchewan. The event offers a 2 km walk, as well as 5 and 10 km run options, showcasing stunning views along the North Saskatchewan River. River Ridge Trails, known for its epic mountain biking terrain, features scenic single tracks, challenging obstacles, and breathtaking landscapes that will captivate participants. The trail network comes to life from spring to fall, attracting runners and bikers seeking adventure. Participants will start and finish their run at a vibrant location overlooking the river valley. The course includes valley climbs, technical single tracks, exhilarating downhill stretches, and panoramic vistas. Both Sport and Enduro runners will follow the same path initially, with the longer course diverging to tackle more demanding terrain. Vivid and immersive, this night of poetry explores the negative space and electric potential of the off-limits, the outskirts, the interstices. Jody Chan, Leanne Dunic, Zehra Naqvi and Jaz Papadopoulos are rising-star voices who showcase how poetry can expand our awareness and possibilities. Their new, critically acclaimed books explore a vast terrain, including giving birth to a self in multiple languages and dimensions, defying psychiatric diagnoses and imposed identities and the search for breathable air and the body’s awakening. This reading and conversation, hosted by poet Melanie Siebert, will delve into the materials and methods of poetry that is both transgressive and transformative. For over 60 years, the Massey Lectures has been regarded as one of the most acclaimed lecture series in Canada. This annual five-part series, hosted in five cities across the country, is co-sponsored by CBC Radio, House of Anansi Press and Massey College in the University of Toronto. It is broadcast each November on CBC’s Ideas. Poet and novelist Ian Williams is the newest name to join a long list of thinkers, writers and scholars, as the 2024 CBC Massey lecturer. In advance of Victoria’s event, he will share with VFA attendees the questions that have shaped this year’s series: Why can't we talk to each other? How can we talk to each other? And what do we need to talk about right now? Williams hopes to ignite a national conversation and to make space for conversations without agenda. Time Flies. Time is Relative. Time waits for no-one. Or – as some physicists have recently posited, time is an illusion, with the past, present, and future existing all at once. You will definitely want to make time to come listen to these three authors who all have novel takes on time that are completely enthralling. In Shelley Wood’s juicy, smart-as-a-whip, and highly anticipated second novel, The Leap Year Gene, time almost literally stands still. Leap-year baby Kit McKinley ages just one year for every four and must be kept hidden from of eugenicists, drug companies, and the sensationalist media of the early 20th century. The past and the future co-exist in the same town – one 20 years earlier, one twenty years later – in co-joined valleys in The Other Valley, Scott Alexander Howard’s achingly beautiful and philosophically acute page turner of a debut. And in Yeji Y. Ham’s intense first novel, The Invisible Hotel, the past haunts the present as the long afterlife of the Korean War lingers in the characters’ lives. The protagonist Yewon’s escapes into another reality -- that of the mysterious hotel of the title -- during dreamtime, another dimension of time altogether. Building upon the sucess of our event last year, when our guest was Neville Southall, this year we are delighted that Everton Legend, Trevor Steven has agreed to be our guest for the night. Our compere will be former Goodison stadium annoncer, Graeme White and we have the added bonus of a second guest, as the amazing Giulia Bould from BBC Radio Merseyside, has also agreed to be a guest speaker. As a former team mate, of Gary Stevens, at Everton, Rangers and England, it feels really poignant that Trevor will be able to share his memories with us, 40 years after that amazing squad took us all on a journey that we'll never forget.
