Dinner & a Cruise: Manor Houses along the Potomac & Patuxent River | St. Clement's Island Museum
Cultural Experiences
Civilian Life in the Big House
Dr. Scott Gray and Katherine Humphries will lead a lively conversation exploring manor houses along the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers, with a special focus on civilian life “in the big houses.” Imagine sailing these waterways en route to a grand ball at one of the Tidewater era’s elegant waterfront estates.
Drawing on their work at Historic Sotterley, Dr. Gray and Ms. Humphries will bring to life the social world of the Tidewater—its gatherings, traditions, and daily rhythms.
After this conversation and a bit of dreaming about a visit to the “big house,” we will cruise to a local seafood restaurant for a relaxed, sit-down meal. Following dinner, we’ll return by boat to St. Clement’s Island, where the evening concludes with a custom dessert box from Tea’s Heavenly Bakery.
