A message from our Chef Sana:
“Hi, My name is Sana. I moved here from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2013. I have lived the majority of my life there. Culturally I am Uyghur, an ethnic Muslim minority located in Central Asia (now part of China called Xinjiang). The dishes I teach in my class are a mix of the two cultures I come from.
I learned to cook from my Mum. She used to call my sisters and me to assist her with cooking. I was her main helper, especially when it came to pulling noodles. When I was in high school and had our summer holiday, my mum trusted me enough to cook for the family and I insisted she write me the recipes with every little detail. I got paid for it!
My mum taught me to cook several cuisines from around the world but my favourites were Saudi & Uyghur. Even though I have explored hundreds of dishes living in London, Laghman is the most delicious dish (In my personal opinion!)”.

DallowayDay 2025 at Hatchards Piccadilly | London - Hatchards - Piccadilly
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
London
Welcome to our centenary celebration of Virginia Woolf’s
Mrs Dalloway
.
11:30am – 12.30pm:
A Bloomsbury Walk
Guided by
Clara Jones
, author of
Virginia Woolf: Ambivalent Activist
, we will haunt and saunter in the streets and squares of Virginia Woolf’s beloved Bloomsbury.[Please note:
the walk is available only for those with All Day Tickets. We will send you details of the meeting place by email
.]
2.00 – 3.00pm: In Conversation with Maggie Gee and Michelle de Kretser.
Join us here at Hatchards bookshop on Piccadilly for an in-conversation with authors Michelle de Kretser and Maggie Gee on Virginia Woolf in the 21st century chaired by Maggie Humm, author of
Talland House
and
The Bloomsbury Photographs.
Michelle de Kretse
r is one of Australia's most celebrated writers, renowned for bending fiction, essay and memoir into exhilarating new shapes to explore the boundaries between life and art. In her new novel,
Theory & Practice
, we meet a young woman newly arrived in Melbourne to research the novels of Virginia Woolf. In bohemian St Kilda, she meets artists, activists, students - and Kit. He claims to be in a 'deconstructed' relationship, and they become lovers. Meanwhile, a dismaying discovery throws her work on 'the Woolfmother' into disarray.
Amongst novelist
Maggie Gee
’s glittering oeuvre, key to our conversation today is
Virginia Woolf in Manhattan
in which bestselling author Angela Lamb travels to New York to pursue her passion for Woolf, whose manuscripts are held in a private collection. When a bedraggled Virginia Woolf materialises among the bookshelves, Angela is soon chaperoning her troublesome heroine as the latter tries to grasp the internet and scams bookshops with 'rare signed editions'. And when Virginia insists on them flying to Istanbul, she not only finds a Turkish admirer, but steals the show at an International Conference on - Virginia Woolf!
3:00 – 4:00pm book signing, informal meet-the-authors, soft drinks & cupcakes.
4.00-5.00pm: The Biography of Mrs Dalloway with Mark Hussey and Vara Neverow
For our second panel of the afternoon we are delighted to mark the centenary of
Mrs Dalloway
’s publication by welcoming Mark Hussey here at Hatchards to discuss his new book
Mrs Dalloway: Biography of a Novel
in conversation with Vara Neverow.
In her diary, Virginia Woolf wrote that she wanted her new novel ‘to give life & death, sanity & insanity… to criticise the social system, & to show it at work, at its most intense.’
This afternoon, in conversation with
Vara Neverow
, Managing Editor of the Virginia Woolf
Miscellany
and former President of the International Virginia Woolf Society,
Mark Hussey
discusses how Virginia Woolf achieved this creative ambition: from the first stirrings that appeared in her diary through to the struggle she had in moulding and developing characters and storyline. Once published,
Mrs Dalloway
was recognised almost immediately as a major development in prose fiction, and Mark traces its remarkable legacy through one hundred years to the present day. This panel will be chaired by Sarah Hall, VWSGB Publicity Officer and Co-Editor of the
Virginia Woolf Bulletin.
After the event, Mark will also be available to sign copies of
Mrs Dalloway: Biography of a Novel
.
5.00pm onwards: Mrs Dalloway’s Party
We hope you will be able to join us to celebrate publication of The Hatchards Library edition of
Mrs Dalloway
with a glass of wine and live jazz with Wayne McIntyre and guests showcasing a repertoire from the 1920s.

1 Day Carving Course- Carving a Cheese Board | 9 Peacock Yard, London, UK
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
London
During this introductory course you will hand carve an oak cheese board with grapes and vine leaf. No previous experience is necessary.
Over the course of the day, you will learn about the various tools required, cutting techniques, the structure of timber/grain direction and the different ways of finishing and maintaining your completed piece.
Wood carving can be a surprisingly technical pursuit, but we simplify the various stages and difficulties so that the process is accessible to everyone.
The day begins with an introduction into the tools and safety, followed by a brief explanation of the steps and obstacles you are likely to face. Then you will select one of our pre-made boards with an attached blank to carve and a separate plaster cast to copy. We will guide you through the carving with demonstrations, and aim to keep everyone progressing at the same pace.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout.
We break for lunch at 1 pm, and will provide a homemade vegetarian stew/soup and bread if desired, or else there is a wealth of local cafes/restaurants nearby.
After lunch we commence with a quick demonstration of sharpening and maintaining the chisels, as well as information about where to purchase tools if you want to continue your carving careers
We aim to have your carvings completed by mid-afternoon, allowing time to apply an oil finish and let you admire your finished wood carving. You will walk away with a beautiful product to keep or gift, along with the essential skills required to continue carving in the comfort of your own home.

Battle of the Big Bang | The Royal Institution
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
London
The Big Bang has long been accepted as the ultimate origin of our universe - but what if it’s just the beginning of the story?
In this talk, astrophysicist
Niayesh Afshordi
will explore the fierce scientific debates over cosmic origins, revealing how modern cosmologists are rethinking the Big Bang itself. He will discuss the latest theories, including his own leading-edge research, that challenge the traditional narrative: was the Universe born from a black hole? Does time extend before the Big Bang? Could our cosmos be part of a vast multiverse or an eternal cycle of rebirth?
Science is not just about equations - it’s about people, rivalries, and radical ideas. Join Niayesh for a journey through the evolving frontiers of cosmology and the search for the true origins of our universe.
By booking to attend events at the Royal Institution, you confirm that you have read and agree to the Ri's

Orquestra Mambarito
Burning up red-hot classics from 70s New York, Colombia, Puerto Rico and beyond, they should be arrested for arson! Their blend of classic salsa from 70s hotspots and Afro-Caribbean rhythm really paints a picture of an electrifying live show—those
big fat horns

killer vocals
must absolutely light up the dance floor.
The 13-strong group has a classic salsa line-up of trumpets, trombones, baritone sax and full Afro-Cuban rhythm section, fronted by fabulous singers Victor Mastrangioli (Venezuela), Diego Abril (Colombia) and Nestor Rojas (Venezuela). ¡A gozar!
“There are few full-time ‘large’ Afro-Latin orchestras in the UK and Europe, but Mambarito are up there with the very best, these cats satisfy music aficionados and dance party animals alike. Always a massive hit at my weekly Saturday afternoon Latin Jazz Brunch sessions, they just seem to get tighter and funkier each show.”
