Cultural Experiences
Nothing beats a home-cooked meal shared with family! And this is what inspires our Family Style Cookery Classes , a fun, laid-back homestyle cooking experience. Here, you will learn to prepare different dishes and then enjoy them with people who, like you, fuel our mission of supporting refugee and migrant chefs on their journey to integration. It’s a cookery class with a conscience, like they say! Your class will be led by our wonderful Chef Sana from Saudi Arabia at the Migrateful Cookery School in Clerkenwell, London . At our Family Style Cookery Classes, you will be grouped with other participants and prepare dishes together as a team. Think of Chef Sana as the head of the family! She will take care of dividing the class into groups, and each group will be responsible for creating one of the dishes. Of course, you are welcome and encouraged to move around during the class to learn about the other dishes being prepared. Throughout the evening, Chef Sana will share stories about their food and culture, and explain how to prepare each of the dishes so you come away with some new cooking tricks and inspiration from Saudi Arabia. You will also be emailed the recipes after the class. Menu , subject to change : Jawawa (Uyghur Dumplings filled with Lamb or Chard) | Meat (Lamb) and Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat), Sulphites, Milk Crunchy Chilli & Garlic Oil | Vegan Laghman (Hand-stretched Noodles with Braised Vegetables) | Vegetarian; Eggs, Gluten (Wheat), Celery, Suphites Foul Qulabah (Fava Bean Dip) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat), Milk Luqaimat Alqadi (Saudi Doughnuts with Sesame and Date Syrup) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat), Milk, Soya, Sesame This menu is mostly vegetarian but contains one dish that contains meat (lamb) with vegetarian filling options. Please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements so our team is aware ahead of the class but k indly note that we will not be substituting any ingredients to accommodate dietary needs, so please only book into classes that suit your dietary requirements. Please see our Food and Allergen Policy when booking into the class for more information. A message from our Chef Sana: “Hi, My name is Sana. I moved here from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2013. I have lived the majority of my life there. Culturally I am Uyghur, an ethnic Muslim minority located in Central Asia (now part of China called Xinjiang). The dishes I teach in my class are a mix of the two cultures I come from. I learned to cook from my Mum. She used to call my sisters and me to assist her with cooking. I was her main helper, especially when it came to pulling noodles. When I was in high school and had our summer holiday, my mum trusted me enough to cook for the family and I insisted she write me the recipes with every little detail. I got paid for it! My mum taught me to cook several cuisines from around the world but my favourites were Saudi & Uyghur. Even though I have explored hundreds of dishes living in London, Laghman is the most delicious dish (In my personal opinion!)”. We’re excited to have you in the class! Please take note of a few final reminders: We will send you a reminder email 3 days before the class takes place. We require a certain number of participants to run this class and reserve the right to cancel it due to insufficient enrolment . If this occurs, we will, at your convenience, transfer you to another class of your choice of the same value. If this option does not suit you, you will have the choice to receive either a gift voucher for the class or a full refund. In the case of insufficient enrolment, we will inform you at least 6 days before the class. Ingredients used in our classes contain, may contain, or may have been manufactured/prepared on shared equipment with the 14 allergens listed above. We cannot guarantee that any food or drink prepared or consumed in any of the Migrateful Cookery Classes are free from any of the 14 allergens, or any other ingredient. Welcome to our centenary celebration of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway . 11:30am – 12.30pm: A Bloomsbury Walk Guided by Clara Jones , author of Virginia Woolf: Ambivalent Activist , we will haunt and saunter in the streets and squares of Virginia Woolf’s beloved Bloomsbury.[Please note: the walk is available only for those with All Day Tickets. We will send you details of the meeting place by email .] 2.00 – 3.00pm: In Conversation with Maggie Gee and Michelle de Kretser. Join us here at Hatchards bookshop on Piccadilly for an in-conversation with authors Michelle de Kretser and Maggie Gee on Virginia Woolf in the 21st century chaired by Maggie Humm, author of Talland House and The Bloomsbury Photographs. Michelle de Kretse r is one of Australia's most celebrated writers, renowned for bending fiction, essay and memoir into exhilarating new shapes to explore the boundaries between life and art. In her new novel, Theory & Practice , we meet a young woman newly arrived in Melbourne to research the novels of Virginia Woolf. In bohemian St Kilda, she meets artists, activists, students - and Kit. He claims to be in a 'deconstructed' relationship, and they become lovers. Meanwhile, a dismaying discovery throws her work on 'the Woolfmother' into disarray. Amongst novelist Maggie Gee ’s glittering oeuvre, key to our conversation today is Virginia Woolf in Manhattan in which bestselling author Angela Lamb travels to New York to pursue her passion for Woolf, whose manuscripts are held in a private collection. When a bedraggled Virginia Woolf materialises among the bookshelves, Angela is soon chaperoning her troublesome heroine as the latter tries to grasp the internet and scams bookshops with 'rare signed editions'. And when Virginia insists on them flying to Istanbul, she not only finds a Turkish admirer, but steals the show at an International Conference on - Virginia Woolf! 3:00 – 4:00pm book signing, informal meet-the-authors, soft drinks & cupcakes. 4.00-5.00pm: The Biography of Mrs Dalloway with Mark Hussey and Vara Neverow For our second panel of the afternoon we are delighted to mark the centenary of Mrs Dalloway ’s publication by welcoming Mark Hussey here at Hatchards to discuss his new book Mrs Dalloway: Biography of a Novel in conversation with Vara Neverow. In her diary, Virginia Woolf wrote that she wanted her new novel ‘to give life & death, sanity & insanity… to criticise the social system, & to show it at work, at its most intense.’ This afternoon, in conversation with Vara Neverow , Managing Editor of the Virginia Woolf Miscellany and former President of the International Virginia Woolf Society, Mark Hussey discusses how Virginia Woolf achieved this creative ambition: from the first stirrings that appeared in her diary through to the struggle she had in moulding and developing characters and storyline. Once published, Mrs Dalloway was recognised almost immediately as a major development in prose fiction, and Mark traces its remarkable legacy through one hundred years to the present day. This panel will be chaired by Sarah Hall, VWSGB Publicity Officer and Co-Editor of the Virginia Woolf Bulletin. After the event, Mark will also be available to sign copies of Mrs Dalloway: Biography of a Novel . 5.00pm onwards: Mrs Dalloway’s Party We hope you will be able to join us to celebrate publication of The Hatchards Library edition of Mrs Dalloway with a glass of wine and live jazz with Wayne McIntyre and guests showcasing a repertoire from the 1920s. The Big Bang has long been accepted as the ultimate origin of our universe - but what if it’s just the beginning of the story? In this talk, astrophysicist Niayesh Afshordi will explore the fierce scientific debates over cosmic origins, revealing how modern cosmologists are rethinking the Big Bang itself. He will discuss the latest theories, including his own leading-edge research, that challenge the traditional narrative: was the Universe born from a black hole? Does time extend before the Big Bang? Could our cosmos be part of a vast multiverse or an eternal cycle of rebirth? Science is not just about equations - it’s about people, rivalries, and radical ideas. Join Niayesh for a journey through the evolving frontiers of cosmology and the search for the true origins of our universe.
