She is Director of Programmes for Fine Art at Middlesex University. Instagram: @anrobs Website: annerobinsonartwork.org ‘The Charmers’ are a (possibly fictional) band, formed by seven accused ’witches’ from Ayrshire. These runaway time-travelling-players were discovered on a 17th century scroll by an artist researching the Scottish witch trials. Now they’ve made a 4-track EP ‘Not to be Found’ and are ready to go out on tour. This is an art project in diverse forms: films, drawings, sound, broadside ballads, workshops and conversations. ‘The Charmers’ draws on research over a three year period by artist Anne Robinson into the Scottish ‘witch’ trials of the 17th century: known to be amongst the most brutal in the world. During her archival investigations, she found scrolls recording seven accused ‘witches’ in Ayrshire, near her home town of Ayr, as ‘not to be found’ - apparently fugitives. From these fragments, using ‘critical fabulation’ and experimenting with art practice - writing, songs, film, and collaborating performers, the work developed around the idea of a ‘sci-fi folk ballad’. In this story, the accused 'witches' abscond using the very conjuring they are accused of: transported away out of their cells to form a band, on tour with their familiars to historical moments of transformative rebellion - levellers’ meetings, molly houses, cabaret, disco protests… At this point, they have recorded 4 tracks as a 12” vinyl EP. These stories of accused ‘witches’ have resounding relevance today: misogyny, banishment, sexuality, class and ‘othering’. With huge thanks to all the Charmers: Deb Smith, Jo Gate-Eastley, Tansy Spinks, : Violin, Electric Violin, Maggie Nicols, Limpe Fuchs, Debbie Armour, Nic Howiantz, Karina Townsend, Brian O’Neill, Helen Spackman, Louissin Torah Pilikian, Charlie Wood, Rachel Gomme.. and supporters: Arts Council England DYCP, Middlesex University, Space Arts, Dimple Discs, Narture, Ayr, Beaconsfield Contemporary Art, and Queer Materialities Group at GSoA. There will be ‘Broadside Ballad’ Workshops and an Artist’s Talk with the show. Information Source: Narture CIC | eventbrite

Photograms are a camera-less darkroom process where objects are placed on photographic paper, creating abstract photographic compositions through light and shadow. Reaching back to the origins of photography in the 1830’s photograms were popularised in the 1920’s by Dada artist photographer Man Ray and the Constructivist El Lissitzky as a challenge to traditional photography. This graphic process brings chance and mystery into printmaking. A great introduction to darkroom printmaking, we’ll familiarise you with the darkroom, B&W print chemistry and take you step by step through the photogram process. You’ll have the opportunity to create up to five of your own photograms to take away at the end of the session. We have a collection of found objects to share at the darkroom, but you are welcome to bring your own favourite objects, something simple or symbolic. Leaves, feathers and glass work well. The printing paper is 12 x 20 cm so bear this in mind when sizing your objects. Weather permitting, we may also walk down to the beach to forage for objects. This will be a small group of up to 5 participants. Suitable for all levels of experience. Cost : £ 75.00 with all materials included. Plan for the Workshop: · Brief history of the photogram · Demonstration of photogram creation and processing · Coffee and foraging for objects (weather permitting) · Hands on creation of your own photograms Information Source: Narture CIC | eventbrite

Arts
You are invited to join this ballad making workshop using voice, words and improvising to make a broadside ballad - we will draw on themes in the show about witches, outsiders and banishment and you are very welcome to bring along your ‘ballad’ ideas! Broadside Ballads were ‘story’ songs printed on one large sheet with illustrations and widely distributed and shared - common in the UK from the 16th to19th centuries. They could be political, topical, scandalous, or love songs. The workshop is led by Anne Robinson alongside her exhibition at Make: ‘Coming Soon.. The Charmers!’ and building on the ‘sci-fi folk ballads’ and Broadsides she made for her ‘Charmers’ and ‘Hurrier’ art projects, expanding stories of the banished, broke, and usually unrecorded from archive fragments. ‘The Charmers’ are a (possibly fictional) band, formed by seven accused ’witches’ from Ayrshire. Broadside Ballad Workshop 2: Prints | MAKE by Narture Studios

As part of her exhibition The Charmers, artist Anne Robinson is hosting a series of free workshops and an artist talk at MAKE. Her latest work, The Charmers (2024), presents a speculative narrative inspired by a 17th-century scroll uncovered during her research into the Scottish witch trials. The scroll mentions seven runaway ‘witches’ from Ayrshire, recorded as ‘gone away’ and ‘not to be found’. From these historical fragments, Robinson has imagined a (possibly fictional) band formed by these fugitives. The Charmers have even ‘released’ a 4-track vinyl EP and are now ‘touring’ their sci-fi folk ballad. Through film, text, drawing, song, and performance, Robinson’s work reimagines the voices of these lost figures, offering a creative response to the brutality of Scotland’s 16th and 17th-century witch trials, some of the most severe in history. You are invited to join this workshop to make printed 'broadside' prints of ballads using drawing, collage and Riso printing. We will draw on themes in the show about witches, outsiders and banishment and you are very welcome to bring along your ‘ballad’ ideas!
