Apr 6, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Gatos
Enjoy free general admission on the first Sunday of the month @ NUMU! The museum is open from 10-4, and we can't wait to see you there! Join us for a free guided art tour from 11 AM-12 PM and a history tour from 2-2:30 PM. (Limited to 25, first come, first serve.) This April, our art tour will be led by artist Mitra Fabian of our exhibition Seeping Through Domestic Dissonance. See our current exhibitions at numulosgatos.org/exhibitions Admission to NUMU is free year-round for youth under 18, NUMU Members, Los Gatos residents, EBT holders, and active-duty military. Our hours are Apri-Sep, Thu-Sun 10 AM-4 PM & Oct-Mar, Fri-Sun, 10-4. Learn more at numulosgatos.org/visit. Mitra Fabian creates a surreal and somber mixed-media installation that intersects the natural world, built environments, climate change, and human interference. This project will include Fabian’s recognizable organic sculptural forms as well as the use of resistors, capacitors, and diodes. But it will also reveal animal elements and a wooden shelter ravaged by fire. This installation is a contemplative conglomeration of her six years living in the Santa Cruz Mountains where she and her wife encountered first-hand experiences of the CZU fires, catastrophic rain, wind, and downed trees. HEALTH & SAFETY GUIDELINES: In accordance with the New Museum Los Gatos, masks are highly reccommended while inside the museum. Do not attend if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in close contact or tested positive within the past 10 days.

Creating New Artifacts with Cynthia Brannvall | New Museum Los Gatos + Art Studio
Feb 27, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Gatos
Join us for an artist talk with Made of Memory artist Cynthia Brannvall and art historian Dr. Elizabeth Carroll (SJSU and Foothill College). In this conversation, Brannvall reflects on the personal and historical significance of her artistic practice - both as an outlet for catharsis and as a tool for preserving materials, perspectives, and narratives that would otherwise be overlooked by dominant political and institutional forces. For Brannvall, her practice is an instrument for creating counter-narratives. In a time when artifacts and heirlooms are threatened by decay, destruction, and erasure, Brannvall speaks on the power that objects (and the memories they hold) can have, both personally and socially. Made of Memory New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) presents an exhibition of five women artists who explore concepts of memory as it pertains to generational and cultural experience, immigration and migration. Through various media, they explore their experience of inherited memories and unveil personal stories of family and heritage while inviting us all to consider the deeper themes that connect us with the past, and with each other. Engaging with culturally significant materials and symbolism, these works examine the vicarious nature of memory, and present implicit meanings carried in ancestral artifacts that are passed from one generation to the next. Each artist meaningfully conveys the idea that we are all shaped not only by our personal experiences, but by those of past generations. Cynthia Brannvall
Instagram | Website Cynthia Brannvall is an art historian and a multi-media artist who teaches art history as a full-time faculty member of Foothill Community College. She is a California native of African American and Swedish descent. Cynthia has undergraduate degrees in Art Practice and Art History from UC Berkeley where she was a Phi Beta Kappa and a Ronald E. McNair scholar and was awarded the Departmental Citation for her research in Art History. She has an MA in Art History from San Francisco State University with an emphasis on Modern and Contemporary art. NUMU's mission is to make programming accessible to all.
