VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS (1970) w/ GHOULS ON FILM | Beanbag Cinema
Aug 14, 2025 (UTC+1)
Belfast
This summer, Normal Cinema Club is bringing you a season of films that are thoroughly delirious, sweaty and sunbaked.
Valerie and her Week of Wonders (1970) is perfect summer watching for those of us ready to embrace our whismi-goth era.
With stunning surrealist set designs, fantasy-coded vampires, and a dash of lesbian redemption, this Czech horror ticks all the boxes of my recent hyperfixation on anything weird and medieval coded.
As far as Slavic fairy-tales go, Valerie and her Week of Wonders plays with so many great fantasy themes (villainous ferret anybody?), and twists them to reveal the gothic underbelly that all good folktales share; evil exists, and it is entirely man-made. Underneath the sparkly surface there is a darkness that explores the systemic sexualisation of girls, as well as a questionable implied sibling romance, kept just vague enough that it dances the line of problematic.
Let’s DIY our princess hats, make a new tiny animal friend (or foe), and watch something kind of f*cked up this summer.

SOME KIND OF HEAVEN (2020) w/ SHANKILL SCREEN | Vault Artist Studios - Shankill Mission
Aug 21, 2025 (UTC+1)
Belfast
This summer, Normal Cinema Club is bringing you a season of films that are thoroughly delirious, sweaty and sunbaked.
Summer holidays are so nice, it's a shame they can't last forever. But what if they can! In deepest Florida, we find The Villages: the largest retirement community in the world. A dream world of bliss and indulgence, no one could possibly be miserable in a place like this!
Prior to last year's one-two hit of REN FAIRE and SPERMWORLD, Lance Oppenheim made his feature debut with SOME KIND OF HEAVEN. This lusciously lensed doc takes us behind the pearly gates of the Villages and introduces us to some of its residents, and one interloper desperate to get in. Funny and bittersweet, this is a frank look at ageing and luxury, and the dangers of living the dream.
Prior to the feature, we will screen a selection of shorts, including Oppenheim's THE HAPPIEST GUY IN THE WORLD.
Doors will open at 7.30pm, with the first films beginning shortly after 8pm. There will be a short break before the feature. This is a strictly 18+ event.
SHANKILL SCREEN ACCESS INFORMATION:
Please note the screening space is on the 2nd floor and at this time unfortunately has no wheelchair access. Cyclists can store their bikes in the foyer in the main building.
For drivers:
The car park remains open all night. Park at ‘Northumberland Street Car Park’ behind Shankill Mission.
Walk alleyway in front of leisure centre.
Turn left on Shankill Road.
Main entrance to the building is 20m on the left.
Normal Cinema Club is supported by FilmHubNI, and wishes to thank The Shankill Screen for their collaboration, Lance Oppenheim for his blessings, and Rónán Duffy for his season artwork!

Anti Slavery Belfast Walking Tour | The Big Fish
Sep 7, 2025 (UTC+1)
Belfast
In the 18th century, Belfast merchants exported linen clothing, leather shoes and food to the slave plantations in North America and the Caribbean and many prospered from slave labour.
From the 1780s, enlightened Belfast residents were activists for the elimination of the slave trade. The focus was firstly on abolition in the British Empire and then the Caribbean and the US.
The
ANTISLAVERY BELFAST TOUR
reveals the story of Belfast’s involvement in this shameful transatlantic trade and the inspiring role of anti-slavery campaigners who ensured Belfast never profited from the trade in the same way as cities such as London, Liverpool, Glasgow or Bristol.
It is brought to life by local historians and trained tour guides,
Dr Tom Thorpe
and
Mark Doherty
.

Playtime National Conference 2025, Northern Ireland | Orangefield Presbyterian Church
Sep 27, 2025 (UTC+1)
Belfast
Small but mighty!
The work that you do through your toddler group is vital. Though it might feel like your contribution is small, you not only provide a safe space for parents and their little ones to take time out and have fun, but also offer help, happiness and hope for all those who attend.
It might sometimes seem like your toddler group is undervalued, or that you put in a whole lot of effort but don’t have all that much to show for it. You might see just a few families a week, and feel it’s not enough, or perhaps you reach many but wonder if it has any spiritual significance.
The truth is that whatever the shape and size of your toddler group, when you sow into families you have a far-reaching impact on whole communities. God is doing so much beneath the surface that you might not see.
Join us at this year’s
Playtime
Conference
as we explore how God can do mighty things through that ‘small’ that we offer.
It’s not just toddlers who are small but mighty – your group is too!
Keynote speakers
Mark Chester, Care for the Family

Who Let The
Dads
Out?

Parenting Children for a Life of Faith, Comfort in Uncertain Times,
and
It Takes a Church to Raise a Parent.
She lectures on leadership and intergenerational church at theological colleges and consults and speaks internationally.
