MIAS level 1 & 2 training and assessment. Mon 1st - Tue 2nd September 2025 | SK17 6SX
Sep 1–Sep 2, 2025 (UTC+0)
Buxton
This course will equip you with the skills you need to become a mountain bike leader. We’ll cover elements of group management, navigation, trailside maintenance, bike skills, skills assessments and your roles and responsibilities as a mountain bike leader. ' Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme' The MIAS scheme is aimed at safely introducing students of all ages to mountain biking in a variety of different venues. The scope of the Level 2 award allows the award holder to lead individuals and groups on lowland mountain biking routes within easy access to assistance in summer conditions. This would mean no more than a 30 minute walk from a telephone and shelter. This is a combined Level 1/ Level 2 training and assessment course. Depending on your previous experience of mountain biking there are a number of possible outcomes from the course: - Level 1 trained. As a candidate new to mountain biking you will leave with the training for L1 completed and will then need to gain further personal riding and group leadership experience and a 16 hour first aid qualification, before attending a one day assessment in the future to gain your L1 award. - Level 1 awarded and Level 2 trained. If you have the first aid qualification and some previous mountain biking experience you may well achieve a L1 award - this means you will be able to lead groups of students on easily accessible, low level terrain, non-technical cycle trails which have easy access should you have a problem. These trails won’t be in remote locations and can include way marked cycle tracks, canal tow paths, converted railways and forest tracks. This would also count as L2 training, before attending a one day L2 assessment. - Level 2 awarded. If you have significant mountain bike skills and experience, demonstrate strong navigation skills and hold a first aid award you may finish the course with a L2 award. The L2 award allows the leader to take groups into more open country, within 30 minutes of assistance, with technically more demanding terrain including loose surfaces, rocky terrain, single track and small drop offs. Course content Safety - Managing risk and risk assessments - Personal and group equipment - Dealing with common incidents - Riding on public highways - Group management and the role of the leader Personal riding skills - Body position - Braking - Cornering - Descending - Ascending - Use of gears - Front wheel lift - Dealing with trail obstacles e.g. small drop Coaching skills - Teaching principles - Look at different teaching styles Maintenance - Bike set-up - Bike safety check - Recording systems - Trail side repairs - Your tool kit Navigation and access - Route Planning - Route finding - Use of map and compass - GPS - Use of cycle computers - Where you are allowed to ride your bike - Access rights and conservation Although this is a full two days of training/assessment we won’t be riding all the time. There will be plenty of time for questions, discussion and hopefully enjoyment. The second day will involve a longer ride than on day 1. What to bring - Mountain bike in safe working condition. The White Hall Centre can supply a bike, but if you wish to do so, please contact us in advance. - Helmet - Gloves - Bike tool kit and spares - First aid kit - Group shelter if owned - A rucksack to carry things in whilst out riding - Appropriate clothing for the weather including waterproof jacket and extra layers! - Appropriate footwear - Food and drink - Notebook and pen - Compass if owned - Riding glasses if owned Course Times 09.00am – 5.00pm each day F or more information about the course, please contact the centre via: Telephone: 01298 23260email: whitehall.centre@derbyshire.gov.ukWebsite: www.whitehall.derbyshire-outdoors.orgHealth and FitnessPlease inform the Centre of any medical condition or medication that we should be aware of. Ethics Study Day (Norwich): The Doctrine of Concupiscence | CityGates Church Norwich
Sep 17, 2025 (UTC+1)
Norwich
On Sinful Desire: Understanding and Applying the Biblical Doctrine of Concupiscence
This theological ethics day is taught by Matthew Mason. The doctrine of concupiscence (the evil desires of our sinful nature) has proved controversial among evangelicals in recent years, especially in debates about same-sex attraction. But it is theologically and pastorally vital, and applies far more widely than simply to questions of sexual attraction.
The day will consider the history of the doctrine, before explaining the Protestant position and examining connections to vital doctrines like justification, repentance, sanctification, the relationship of sin and temptation, and the sinlessness of the Lord Jesus when he was tempted. There will be exegesis of key biblical passages, consideration of objections to the doctrine, and chance to explore the pastoral applications and significance of what we believe and teach.

Herbalism & Healing Workshop | Ewhurst Park, RG26 5SL
Sep 21, 2025 (UTC+1)
Tasburgh
This workshop will involve foraging seasonal medicinal and edible plants and fungi, alongside exercises for healing the body and spirit through nature connection and practical techniques.
About the Workshop
Learn how to see the natural world through the eyes of a herbalist and how to identify noteworthy plants and fungi. Our expert guide will showcase seasonal highlights at Ewhurst Park, from small plants and fungi to towering trees, and share insights into their potential uses for medicine, food, or craft materials. Guests will also discover where dangers lurk and how to stay safe exploring and foraging in the natural world.
Alongside identifying key medicinal species, this workshop will also help to foster healing from within through connecting with nature. Guests will have the opportunity to explore their perceptions of the natural world and how different areas make them feel. Visitors will learn how to harness nature through exercises and practical techniques that attempt to promote the healing and wellbeing of mind, body and spirit.
Foraged materials will be taken to our Forest Hub where guests will have the opportunity to make a salve or infusion to take home. There will also be a selection of pre-processed items made with wild ingredients for guests to experience. For example; tinctures, ferments, preserves, cordials, syrups, sauces, crisps, soup, dehydrated foods, craft items and natural fibres.
This workshop includes a simple lunch which will be cooked on an outdoor fire and feature ingredients foraged during the walk alongside produce from Ewhurst Park’s Quality Meats range. Our farming methods don’t include the use of artificial fertilisers or pesticides, and we are in the process of being certified organic by the Soil Association.
Overall, this workshop will serve as an introduction for how to approach the vast and truly ancient and instinctual human activity of being in and utilising nature in a safe and responsible manner. We look forward to you joining us!
About your guide
Our resident herbalist and nature connection practitioner, Simon Keith, grew up in a family of herbalists, and has a lifetime of experience foraging plants and fungi. Simon has helped many people through trauma, illness and difficult times with over 15 years' experience leading local nature therapy and connection sessions. His bushcraft and woodwork skills are second nature, and he’s at his happiest tramping through forests in search of exciting mushrooms and plants.
What can
guests
expect
each season
?
Each workshop is season specific and will feature natural elements that are available at the time. If you would like to discover the wild medicine and food available in other seasons, check out our other Herbalism & Healing Workshops or book onto all three for a discount.
In spring, Ewhurst Park will be brimming with plants that are great for salads, and herbs for wild medicine or flavour in cooking. Tree bark and sap can be harvested and there’ll be species of spring fungi to be found.
In summer, the park is alive with flowers blooming and ripe sweet berries. Medicinal plants in season include yarrow, borage and meadowsweet, and guests can enjoy the simple delight of snacking on wild berries.
Autumn is a fantastic season for nuts, seeds, fungi and roots. There’ll be rosehips for herbal teas, burdock roots for herbal medicine, and sweet chestnuts for roasting on the campfire.
