Oud Player on the Tel | Cottiers Theatre

May 12, 2025 (UTC+1)
Glasgow
Conferences
Join us at Cottiers for a one-off performance of Oud Player on the Tel! This piece, written by Tom Block from the International Human Rights Arts Movement and directed by Jesica Garrou, aims to tell the story of how the founding of Israel on Palestinian land could have been a catalyst for peace, and instead became 75+ years of conflict into the war of today. Although very sensitive to the Palestinian narrative, it also shows how the Jewish people were "hanging by a thread" at that time, and points out that the British and, to a lesser extent America, played a role in beginning this ongoing conflict. The piece aims to educate, as well as open new doorways of understanding in a situation desperately in need of it. The work is presented by the International Human Rights Art Movement , whose foundational values are Beauty as a fundamental creative valu; sincerity and vulnerability of presentation (no anger or finger pointing, which only stifles conversation); celebration of diversity and opening doorways of engagement between people who are in disagreement. Oud Player on the Tel grows out of more than two decades of Tom Block’s work at the forefront of the Palestinian-Israeli peace movement. He published Shalom/Salaam: A Story of a Mystical Fraternity (exploring the Islamic mystical influence on Jewish spirituality) in the USA and Turkey in 2010. He published a Jewish-Sufi quest novel which grew out of this research, The Fool Returns . He was one of two invited Jewish thinkers at the only interfaith conference ever held by al-Azhar University, Cairo)Oud Player on the Tel grows out of more than two decades of Tom Block’s work at the forefront of the Palestinian-Israeli peace movement. He published a Jewish-Sufi quest novel which grew out of this research, The Fool Returns . He was one of two invited Jewish thinkers at the only interfaith conference ever held by al-Azhar University, Cairo). This presentation of "Oud Player on the Tel" includes five of the original cast members, who premiered the piece in New York City in November 2024, as well as the original director, Jesica Garrou and two local actors. The play is part of the Fringe Programme of events around the UNESCO RIELA Spring School: The Arts of Integrating . Reviews Can the tale of two families living in Palestine just before the partition that created the State of Israel shine a light on the current status of affairs? Playwright Tom Block’s Oud Player on the Tel does just that with a combination of wit and empathy." - Joel Benjamin, TheaterScene.net "Oud Player on Tel is a story that needs to be told now more than ever. This original play seemingly uses humor and love to open the audience's hearts and souls. Each actor brings such humanity and vulnerability. Playwright Tom Block has a lot of courage to offer common ground in a world that feels extremely divided. These performances will continue to leave an impact long after watching." - Michael Druck, Casting Director, CSA “The role of art, in my opinion, is to go into the most difficult situations, not turn away from them,” Block said of “Oud Player.” - Ambar Castillo, Religion News Service Audience Reviews "Oud Player on the Tel portrayed Palestinians very well and there was no stereotype/propaganda of Palestinians and Muslims which I’m grateful for. I loved the friendship between Amir and Melke. The music was beautiful! Every single one of the characters makes a place in your heart! Please go see this production while you can!" "Breathtaking and devastating. Beautiful storytelling and incredible talent." "I enjoyed this show tremendously. The acting was brilliant and the play left me in tears." "A thought-provoking play that invited me to think about a complicated and challenging topic from multiple perspectives." "This is a brilliantly written play which was enhanced by the direction and acting. It is an important narrative for all to see. I am moved by the story. This one will sit with me for a while." "Great portrayals of the characters and discourse explaining the perspectives of the Arabs and Jews. Must watch and so timely!" "The play is at the same time an intimate story of two families and a thought provoking study of the complexities of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Emotional and mind opening. I highly recommend this show." "Kudos to Playwright Tom Block who opens a doorway to understanding both sides' perspectives and offering new ones in a situation in which most people feel sure in their too often one-sided perspectives. The play is set in the past BUT as Tom states in an interview, "We really need to keep having these conversations until even a frigid peace with a big fat line of demarcation, with UN peacekeepers along it, would be much, much better than what is currently happening there". This poignant, well-conceived, and well-executed play ends on Nov 24th." "Beautifully written, directed, acted and scored. Extremely engrossing, informative and heartfelt, as well as painful and humorous." Information Source: UNESCO RIELA | eventbrite

One Year Out: A Referendum on the SNP? | Room 203, Boyd Orr Building

May 8, 2025 (UTC+1)
Glasgow
Conferences
This event is taking place in-person in the Boyd Orr Building Room 2 03 at the University of Glasgow or you can sign up to view the talk online. Event Details The next Scottish Parliament elections are about a year away – in ‘political time,’ that is a very long time indeed. Thinking back to the last Scottish elections in 2021, quite a bit has happened in the intervening period, not the least being a 2024 Westminster election that seemed to reshape the Scottish political landscape. Reports at the time suggested that Scotland had “fallen out of love” with the SNP and that without fundamental root and branch reform the party was set to lose the 2026 Holyrood elections. Then the Labour party’s programme for governing the UK began to come into focus, Nigel Farage steered the Reform party to poll surges that have surprised many and the Conservatives in Scotland continued to look for a path out of the wilderness. How will these different factors shape the electoral contest over the next year? Please join members of the Scottish Election Study ’s team of researchers as they present insights from their SCOOP data series to assess the prospects for the 2026 Holyrood elections. Speakers The Scottish Election Study is an independent, ESRC-funded academic study of Scottish politics, elections and voting behaviour. About the Stevenson Trust: The Stevenson Trust was established in 1921 by a bequest to the University of Glasgow from Sir Daniel Macaulay Stevenson to fund a Lectureship in Citizenship.‎ Since 2006 the Trust has promoted a series of annual lectures on citizenship themes. These are held at the University of Glasgow and open to academics, students and the general public. Speakers have included Professor Sir Bernard Crick and other politicians, academics, political theorists, journalists, educators and cultural commentators. The Trust also supports a number of other activities concerned with citizenship, such as conferences and events for schools. "A pioneering saxophonist." Soweto Kinch Round Midnight BBC Radio 3 A major figure on the Scottish Music scene for over 30 years- Phil Bancroft first stuck his head above the proverbial parapet in the late 80’s as saxophonist and main composer for the seminal John Rae Collective before forging a reputation in influential Scottish bands such as Celtic Feet, award-winning Trio AAB, Colin Steele’s Stramash, the SNJO. He has since performed at the highest level with musicians from across the pop, jazz, classical and Celtic music scenes. He is currently working with Greg Lawson’s Grit Orchestra, Paul Harrison’s Sugarwork, leads his own Quartet with Graeme Stephen, Alyn Cosker and Calum Gourlay, and is mixing a new album with Tabla virtuoso Gyan Singh, recorded in Delhi in December 2017. Phil has developed a truly authentic voice on saxophone, combining the study of Jazz, Celtic, Indian and Classical music- to produce a unique mix of virtuosity, expressive sound and heart-felt conviction. "I met two brothers called Bancroft, They’re good!" Sun Ra, writing in The Guardian From the world of jazz, he has performed with luminaries Kenny Wheeler, Oliver Lake, Ernst Reisinger and Joe Lovano- and he has composed music and developed multi-media for his own small and large ensemble projects. These include the multi-media show ‘Small As The World’, exploring the meaning of ‘Home’ with 7-piece band, interactive website, musicians joining-in over live Skype feeds from around the world and animated tin-foil space ships. "Bancroft's Standards Trio took much loved and familiar tunes and made them fresh and vibrant. His passion for the tunes and the stories behind them, as well as anger at the prejudice faced by the artists had the audience captivated." UK Jazz News "An Internationally renowned saxophonist who never rests on his laurels, bringing vitality to what was familiar, making accessible the challenging and free." Alex Cornish | The Old Hairdresser's

Concerts
Alex Cornish Alex Cornish is a singer songwriter, virtuoso violinist, pianist and guitarist from Dunbar, Scotland and he has been around the block. He has supported and toured with (amongst others) Kathryn Williams, Tom McRae, Morcheeba, Alison Moyet, Steve Nieve and Amy MacDonald. He has been in session for Tom Robinson, Dermot O Leary, Roddy Hart, Vic Galloway and more. The Sunday Times said in the past 'a beautiful album that has Mercury Prize written all over it', the Telegraph said 'etheral singer songwriting'. Touring his ninth record, Squall Critical, which was recorded in just over a week at his kitchen table with some synths, programming, his violin, guitar and a single SM57 microphone. Pete Paphides on Squall Critical - "Percussive clicks, shuffling snares and restive washes of electronic noise create a cocoon of sorts for Cornish’s pensive acoustic ruminations. I remember when listening to his previous album, the record for which I wanted to reach afterwards was Travis’s The Man Who . With this one, it’s Radiohead’s In Rainbows and Nick Mulvey’s First Mind . Which perhaps gives you an indication of the direction from that one to Squall Critical . Of course, I'm writing a singles column here, so I’m really just here to pick out one song. And right now, I’m finding it hard to look beyond the quietly cascading majesty of the title track. At times, Cornish sounds like a man who, whilst not wanting to be any trouble, is trying to keep himself busy as he anxiously awaits the outcome of his own story. If, right now, you feel like you're sitting in the same metaphorical waiting room, you could do much worse than cue up Squall Critical while waiting for your name to be called."
