West Village Pub Tour Traces Roots of LGBTQ Culture - Pride Walking Tour | The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center - New York

Jun 21, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
New York
Cultural Experiences
Explore LGBTQ history as played out in sometimes notorious speakeasies, bars, and clubs. For decades bar culture has loomed large in the LGBTQ community. During this three-hour tour, learn why bars have played such an outsized role in gay life. Join us as we tip back our glasses at four special gay/lesbian bars, on an entertaining tour of Manhattan’s most storied neighborhoods. Why did Village waterfront bars welcome the rougher side of gay life? Who was the woman who opened the first lesbian nightclub? How has she been immortalized? Which bar was the site of a major gay protest resulting in a famous court case years prior to Stonewall? What are the biggest threats to today’s gay bar culture? During our walk, we will see the site of former LGBTQ bars, clubs, and speakeasies, and visit some of those that are open today. The tour stops for optional beverages on your own at The Cubby Hole, Henrietta Hudson's, the Stonewall Inn, and Julius. We will also stop at the new Stonewall National Monument Visitors Center , which gave our tour a sneak preview before its opening last year. What's Up? Our tour begins at 2:30 PM sharp , rain or shine, at the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues. Subway: 1/2/3, A/C/E or F/M to 14th Street; L to 6th or 8th Avenue. After viewing the Center’s famous Keith Haring bathroom (now a meeting room), we explore the rich history of West Village watering holes. Refreshments on your own. We will also stop at the new Stonewall National Monument Visitors Center , located next to the Stonewall Inn and across the street from Christopher Park. Our tour ends at approximately 5:00 PM at the historic Julius bar. Due to the fluid nature of this unique walking tour, we highly encourage you to set aside extra time after the published end of the tour. You will then have the flexibility to enjoy all four of the historic venues where we stop for beverages. You may also want to consider eating at Julius at the end. About Our Guide: Phil Desiere (shown above in main image), founder of Walk About New York , is licensed by the city as a Tourist Guide. In addition to tours of such quintessential spots as Central Park and several different art tours of the New York City Subway, Phil has developed and leads the Gay Graves Tour at Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark. KAISI YE PAHELI Director : Ananyabrata Chakravorty Starring : Sukant Goel, Sadhana Singh, Rajit Kapur, Chittaranjan Giri Run time : 1 Hour 36 minutes Language : Hindi Year Made : 2025 Country : India Synopsis : In the quaint hill town of Shottipur, northeast India, a sixty-year-old warm and cultured widow, Ma, lives with her thirty-something son, Uttam, a policeman. Uttam’s father, Baba, died on duty eight years ago, leaving Ma lonely and yearning for connection. Uttam, however, dismisses her as a simple homemaker, ignoring her intelligence and her past contributions to Baba’s cases. Their strained relationship deepens her isolation. When 19-year-old Ishita, a talented girl, is found dead in her PG, Uttam joins the inexperienced police team tasked with solving the murder. The ruling party, eager to promote Shottipur as a tourist haven of honest folk, pressures Uttam’s boss, Tamang, to close the case in two weeks—preferably as a suicide—before the launch. Ma sees this as a chance to bridge the gap with Uttam. She logically debunks the suicide theory, impressing Tamang, who was Baba’s trainee and admired her skills. So, he recruits Ma to assist. As Ma shines in the investigation, Uttam stubbornly refuses to acknowledge her worth. Then a second murder happens —of someone close to Ma, making things personal. With days left, a seasoned detective, Bondo, takes over, barring Ma from the station. Undeterred, Ma pursues the killer alone, risking her life, while Uttam remains at odds with her. Will Ma unmask the murderer? Will Uttam finally see her for the brilliant woman she is? The answers to the who, why, and how of this gripping mystery unfold in Kaisi Ye Paheli , a tale of resilience, redemption, and a mother’s unwavering spirit in the misty hills of Shottipur. Ananyabrata, a writer-director from Assam and now based in Mumbai, holds degrees in engineering and business administration. His debut feature, Kaisi Ye Paheli (A Mother, a Son, and a Murder) follows his short films 90 to Win and Naukri (Eligible). Samir Zaidi is a Mumbai-based filmmaker who began his career after earning a degree in Statistics due to familial pressure. Driven by his passion for cinema, he worked as an Assistant Director on Husband Material (TIFF 2018), Sacred Games (Netflix) and Extraction (Netflix). Samir has had the privilege of assisting renowned directors such as Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee, and Vishal Bhardwaj. Eritaj the story of the land the voice of the ancestors | Gibney 280 Broadway

Cultural Experiences
To be Haitian is to know that our freedom is a birthright. To be Black is to know the taste, smell, sound, and depth of this freedom, and to carry it in our blood and bones. To be Black and Haitian, today, is to reconcile this truth with the reality of loss, grief, and chaos, as well as an unwavering sense of hope and desire. Eritaj: The Story of the Land and the Voice of the Ancestors attempts to expose the nature of this duality and the process of such a reconciliation for the self, for the family, and for the community in our day-to-day lives. Eritaj: The Story of the Land and the Voice of the Ancestors uses dance and embodied storytelling to revisit and reframe common scenarios of displacement, poverty, abuse, and misery often associated with Haiti’s descent to instability and insecurity. Eritaj does this while uniquely highlighting the lived connections between Haitians and other communities of the African Diaspora Information Source: Robenson Dance Haïti | eventbrite

She’s one of the most coveted songwriters in LA…and she can’t seem to write. There’s an emptiness inside her, and nothing seems to fill it. When she returns to her hometown of Vienna Shores, North Carolina, she hopes that the sand, the surf, and the concerts at The Revelry, her family’s music venue, will spark her inspiration. But when she gets there, nothing is how she left it. Her best friend is avoiding her, her mother’s memories are fading fast, and The Revelry is closing. How can she think about writing her next song when everything is changing without her? Until she hears it. A melody in her head, lyric-less and half-formed, and an alluring and addictive voice to go with it—belonging, apparently, to a wry musician with hangups of his own. Surely, he’s a figment of her overworked imagination. But then the very real man attached to the voice shows up in Vienna Shores. He’s aggravating and gruff on the outside—nothing like the sweet, funny voice in Joni’s head—and he has a plan: They’ll finish the song haunting them both, break their connection, and hope they don’t risk their hearts in the process. Because that song stuck in their heads? Maybe it’s there for a reason. Just as she is done planting them, she discovers small rat droppings around the garden. With this Farah dives deep into a point of no return as she dedicates her life towards protecting the saplings at the cost of affecting her sanity. Orphanage of Memories is a protest against how the average Indian views Kashmir in movies - where the focus is always on the landscape and never on the people. We were keen on telling the story of an individual and not the serenity of Kashmir. This is precisely why we chose to set the story in the harshest part of winter, before snowfall starts - when the whole valley is engulfed in a blanket of deary gray monotones. Director: Rayit Hashmat Qazi Rayit Hashmat Qazi is an independent filmmaker from Kashmir, who is currently working in Mumbai, India. He has worked as an assistant to International as well as Indian directors on TVC’s for the last 6 years. From Jim Sonzero to Rob Cohen and Harvey Brown, Rayit has been a right hand to a wide array of filmmakers while working with Bang Bang Films on brands as diverse as AIRTEL, Tanishq, Britannia, Pepsi, Loreal, etc. In addition to this Rayit has worked as an assistant director on the critically acclaimed Mukti Bhawan that went on to premiere at the Venice Film Festival amongst other international film festival giants. This experience was instrumental in helping him transition from assisting to directing ads of his own. Over the course of the last two years, Rayit has made commercials for brands like Britannia, HUL, BMC, Airtel, etc. His maiden short Do Cup Chai (Two Cups of Tea) which sees the story of two ex-lovers who meet each other to fulfill a promise over a cup of tea, was nominated in the Best Short Film category at the NYIFF (New York Indian Film Festival). It further went on to premiere at Silk Screen International Festival and the prestigious Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival in Assam. Currently, Rayit is developing a show for Amazon as well as MX player. He has completed his graduation in Audio Visual Production/ Filmmaking from Symbiosis Institute Of Media and Communication. Senior among the staff is Shalini, a bouncer who is a single mother. They are told that the smartwatches are tools for safety and efficiency. However, the watches soon reveal a darker purpose—constant surveillance. As the smartwatches begin to intrude on personal lives, harvesting data and controlling movements, the nightclub faces opposition from Komal - a young recruit from Shalini’s village who is extremely resistant to wearing the smartwatch. Berated for her team’s incompetence, Shalini must ensure that her colleagues wear the smartwatch or face severe consequences. In a world where every move is tracked, Shalini and Komal’s fight becomes one of autonomy, dignity, and the right to be unseen. Director: Udit Khurana Udit Khurana graduated from Hansraj College, Delhi University, with a degree in Mathematics. His journey in storytelling started in a university theater environment and naturally progressed to filmmaking. After training at L.V.
