Well-known in the Russian community IZH Project and Sounday will perform the greatest Russian Rock hits and their music, leaving you with the best memories and emotional drive! A great addition to the evening is PLAN B - Bulgarian Rock Band that will perform famous rock covers and Bulgarian rock. The great place and atmosphere at the 3 WISE MONKEYS on George St in Sydney City will contribute to the amazing event full of music, dance, and positive energy. ZH Project Band is playing Russian rock greatest hits covers and their own music. The band formed in 2017 and performed in different venues and festivals. In 2018 the band played in Russian Rock Club at Hornsby RSL for the first time and gained great success in the Russian-speaking community. Apart from a standard set of instruments the band also plays folk instruments including violin, tenor block recorder, Russian balalaika, and accordion, and has two multi-instrumentalists. Their first performance received glowing feedback and marked the start for a series of successful shows. In 2024, the band performed more well-received gigs across Sydney and Melbourne, most of which were completely sold out. Renowned for their energetic stage presence, distinctive guitar solos, and rich, full-bodied sound, Sounday brings a fresh take on beloved Russian rock classics. Their repertoire includes covers of iconic bands such as Bi-2, Korol i Shut, Kino, Aria, Mumiy Troll, Zemfira, and many more. Plan B has a quintessential teenage garage band vibe. We got started a few decades late in 2023, in the backyard of the Bulgarian school in Sydney, deciding to elevate our love for music to the local library’s music room. Initially a trio, Plan B grew organically when a few more Bulgarian dads joined us in the schoolyard, sharing their passion for the long-lost grunge and metal of the '80s and '90s. Thanks to the gracious invitation from IZH Project, we're excited to perform some of our favorite cover songs on stage for the very first time! The James Joyce Centre is proud to host the Irish launch of a phenomenal new collection of Nigerian and Irish poetry on Saturday, February 1st at 6pm. Trailing a Sea-Weed Cord: Contemporary Irish and Nigerian Poets on Wole Soyinka's Ulysses: Notes From Here to My Joyce Class is an extraordinary endeavour that fuses Ireland and Nigeria's rich literary heritages. This year marks the 91st birthday of Professor Wole Soyinka, the Nigerian Nobel Laureate for Literature, who while imprisoned in 1966 wrote a poem entitled Ulysses: From Here to my Joyce Class. In honour of Prof. Soyinka, five Irish poets selected by Poetry Ireland and five Nigerian poets each contributed a poem inspired or reacting to his poem. An initiative of the Embassy of Ireland in Nigeria, the book was published last year by Bookcraft, the publishers of Wole Soyinka’s works and is the second part of a trilogy of publications initiated by the Embassy to promote Irish-Nigerian cultural discourse and understanding. The first being a collection of poetry, published by Quramo Publishing, called Things Fall Apart, The Centre Cannot Hold, also featuring 5 Nigerian poets and 5 Irish poets selected by Poetry Ireland. This collection was launched to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the award of the Nobel Prize for Literature to WB Yeats and was inspired by Chinua Achebe’s seminal novel Things Fall Apart the title of which was taken from Yeats' The Second Coming. Trailing a Sea-Weed Cord: Contemporary Irish and Nigerian Poets on Wole Soyinka's Ulysses: Notes From Here to My Joyce Class features a foreword by President Michael D. Starting on Wednesday 12th February for eight weeks This is the fourth year running of the 8 week course of self defence where women practice verbal and physical skills to build confidence in their abilities, assertiveness and awareness in the face of misogyny and gender based violence. The impact of gender violence, inequalities, generational trauma and cultural male entitlement has become more widely understood and acknowledged of late in our society. Ideally we need to see a shift away from enabling male entitlement by making women’s safety the responsibility of that woman only. We need to be more about looking at the actions of those around her who cross her boundaries, which is beginning to happen And while we wait for these improvements to continue, and for men to take accountability, this is self defence that seeks to offer a wider set of options to women in challenging or threatening situations. No two women are the same, and no situation is identical, so simply telling a person what they “should have done” is simply reverting to victim blaming, and making the woman responsible again. The message is simple. No assault is ever the victim’s fault. And so also a wider toolbox of options is needed because self defence starts way before a slap or a punch or a direct assault. It starts with the everyday grind of cat calling, of verbal micro aggressions or unfunny jokes and assumptions that undermine us and take away our personal power. In eight weeks we will tune up listening to our instincts to identify misogynistic beliefs that surface in conversations with colleagues, acquaintances, friends and family. This helps us as belief systems can be used to predict behaviour, be it aggressively breaking a boundary, or passively refusing to support us in the narrative. Recognition of these tendencies gives us greater time to consider our options. We will practice spotting body language that intimidates in order to control us, and using it ourselves to set boundaries We will explore voice; how to use it, and some options for de escalation conversations. And we will move. Basic physical tactics are repeated in order to work away from the freeze reaction, and increase our own physical trust in ourselves. There will be striking, kicking and fighting, as much to sample our own power as to potentially use it on others It will be conducted by a woman instructor with over twenty years of experience in martial arts, self defence and personal safety.
