This session with artist Atiyya is a self portrait workshop, where we will each make a self portrait by reusing and upcycling scrap fabrics, papers, materials and anything with interesting textures, patterns and colours. The aim of the workshop is to reflect on how we see ourselves to create an abstract self portrait - focusing on certain facial features, expressions and the things that make us unique as individuals.

Atiyya Mirza is British, Pakistani, Muslim artist based in Bradford. Her work explores themes of womanhood, empowerment, storytelling and identity through textiles and sculpture. She applies a sense of playfulness to her work, whilst showcasing topics important to her, such as breaking cultural barriers and stereotypes, exploring religion and relationship as well as language and heritage.

An Evening with Amal El-Mohtar in Leeds | Waterstones Leeds

Leeds
We are so excited to be part of Amal El-Mohtar's UK tour for her hugely anticipated solo debut,
The River Has Roots
! Amal will be joining us on the 24th of April at 7pm.
From the co-author of the bestselling
This is How You Lose the Time War
comes a beautifully realised and atmospheric slice of fantasy fiction centred on two inseparable sisters who live on the edge of Faerie.
Follow the river Liss to the small town of Thistleford, on the edge of Faerie, and meet two sisters who cannot be separated, even in death.
'Oh what is stronger than a death? Two sisters singing with one breath.'
In the small town of Thistleford, on the edge of Faerie, dwells the mysterious Hawthorn family.
There, they tend and harvest the enchanted willows and honour an ancient compact to sing to them in thanks for their magic. None more devotedly than the family's latest daughters, Esther and Ysabel, who cherish each other as much as they cherish the ancient trees.
But when Esther rejects a forceful suitor in favor of a lover from the land of Faerie, not only the sisters' bond but also their lives will be at risk...
