Re-telling Irish Mythology: An Evening with Kim Curran & Bea Fitzgerald | 80 Hill Rise
Mar 20, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Richmond
Join us as we celebrate the publishing of Kim Curran's 'The Morrigan' an electric retelling of Ireland’s mythic goddess of war and discuss the process of retelling mythology... Kim will be interviewed by writer Bea Fitzgerald followed by a QnA with the audience! About The Morrigan: They called me The Morrigan. I was magnificent. I was multitudes. They twisted my story, stripped me away. But I will tell it now in my own voice. It begins, as all the best stories do, in darkness. From an ancient, storm-tossed sea, a tribe of gods reach the rocky shores of Ireland. Among them, a strange, hungry, red-haired girl. A girl who can change shape, from bird to beast to goddess. A girl who dreams of battle, of blood, of death and power. She does not know yet that a woman who seeks to rule will always be in danger – or that there are far more treacherous figures in this land than the gods who raised her. She does not know that one day love will burn so deep in her heart that its scars will never heal. That she will know pain so raw and pure it will almost tear her apart. She does not know that her journey will take a thousand years. That her name will be remembered for a thousand more. She is The Morrigan, and she is waiting: a girl with rage coiled in her chest. Beautiful, powerful, ravenous rage. A rage that will live forever. An electric debut retelling of Ireland’s mythic goddess of war, from a bold and powerful new voice. Praise for The Morrigan: 'Thrilling and bloody from first page to last, this is an extraordinary portrait of a goddess, a warrior, a woman. Welcome to a stunning new voice in literary fiction - Patrick Ness, author of A Monster Calls 'Like Madeline Miller, Curran has taken centuries of Irish legend and harnessed a powerful retelling for modern readers. A timely feminist battle cry with pitch perfect writing' - Juno Dawson 'Breathtaking in scope, blistering in truth,The Morriganis abeautifully dark tale of rage, power and love. Razor-sharp, profound and intensely moving, this is more than a retelling. Kim Curran’s writing is lyrical, brutal and sublime -a stunning story of sisterhoodas relevant today as it has ever been. I adored it' - Miranda Dickinson About Kim Curran: Kim Curran was born in Dublin and grew up in London. She holds a degree in Philosophy and Literature from Sussex University and is a freelance Creative Director and Royal Literary Fund Fellow. The Morrigan is her debut adult novel. About Bea Fitzgerald: Bea Fitzgerald is a Sunday Times bestselling author and content creator who has swiftly become one of the UK's biggest YA stars. About Shroud: An utterly gripping story of survival and first contact on a hostile planet from Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of the Arthur C. Clarke Award-winningChildren of Time. A commercial expedition to a distant star system discovers a pitch-black moon alive with radio activity. Its high-gravity, high-pressure, zero-oxygen environment is deadly to human life, but ripe for exploitation. They named it Shroud.
Under no circumstances can a human survive Shroud’s inhospitable surface – but a catastrophic accident forces Juna Ceelander and Mai Ste Etienne to make an emergency landing in a barely adequate escape vehicle. Alone, and fighting for survival, the two women embark on a gruelling journey across land, sea and air in search of salvation.
But as they travel, Juna and Mai begin to understand Shroud’s unnerving alien species. It also begins to understand them. About Art of the African DiasporaArt Of The African Diaspora is the longest running event of its kind in the Bay Area. It originated from a salon for African American artists known as Colors of Black that was organized in 1989 by artist and professor Marie Johnson Calloway. In 1996 artists Jan Hart-Schuyers and Rae Louise Hayward established the exhibition The Art of Living Black at Richmond Art Center. Many of the artists from Colors of Black participated in the inaugural exhibition, which presented the work of emerging and established African American artists. The artists gained introductions to new audiences, and access to build a creative community of artists and art lovers. Over the next twenty-five years the exhibition ensured the increased visibility for African American artists in the Bay Area that Hart-Schuyers and Hayward conceptualized. After the loss of both founders, their organizing efforts were carried on for many years by artists, family members, and RAC. The next stage of the events development happened in 2018, when a Steering Committee comprised of participating artists, presented the exhibition. In 2019, the Committee became aware of the necessity to incorporate a broader vision of the African Diaspora and consequently renamed the organization Art Of The African Diaspora. In its 28th year, Art of the African Diaspora continues to express and celebrate the creative achievements of artists of African descent. This year, over 150 artists showcase their work at Richmond Art Center, as well as in open studios and satellite exhibitions at different venues around the Bay Area.
