The Elephant and the Grass
Directed by
Beau Rosario and Brandon Gulish
With only each other to depend on,
14-year-old Shamira
and her mother flee tribal
genocide. While
they fight to escape South Sudan’s violent civil war
, experts and
defectors challenge those in power. Global pressure mounts as these profiteers of
war claim to seek peace. With unprecedented access, the film examines how politicians weaponize people's trauma to pillage nations. Considered the most
corrupt place on earth, can the world’s newest country overcome these issues and
finally find peace?
This screening holds particular significance for Brandon Gulish, one of the film’s co-
directors, who grew up in the Pittsburgh area and credits his hometown as the
foundation of his creative journey. While The Elephants and the Grass has traveled
far, we are excited to share it with audiences in Brandon’s own backyard.

The Price of Resistance
traces the life of Sala Udin — a revered civil rights activist, community leader, and former Pittsburgh City Councilman. The film captures Udin’s powerful story through rare archival footage, personal reflections, and a compelling interview with a former FBI agent who was active in Mississippi during the civil rights era. While the agent did not monitor Udin directly, his account provides vital context to the government’s surveillance efforts during a volatile period in American history.
The filmmakers were compelled to bring Sala Udin’s story to the screen because of its enduring relevance in today’s ongoing fight for social justice. They felt it was crucial to preserve and amplify his voice — a voice that spoke truth to power during some of the most dangerous moments of the Civil Rights Movement. To ensure the film was grounded in both history and emotion, the production team traveled to Mississippi to interview individuals who lived through that era and offered powerful insight into the movement that shaped Udin. The filmmaking duo also journeyed to southwest Tennessee to interview retired FBI agent
Cecil Moses
, whose work during the same period revealed stark contrasts in the government's handling of civil unrest.
The documentary also features recognizable figures from Pittsburgh and across the country who speak to Udin’s impact on their lives and communities.
More than a documentary, this film is a tribute to resilience, transformation, and the ongoing pursuit of equity.

The AI Con: How to Fight Big Tech's Hype and Create the Future We Want | Clio's
May 18, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Oakland
As AI technologies proliferate, so do the absurd and false claims about their potential. AI boosters would have you believe that AI is solving intractable problems, automating decision-making, outsmarting experts, revolutionizing newsrooms, and generally making our lives way easier and way better — or it will if it doesn’t morph into our dreaded machine overlord and extinguish humanity altogether. But maybe you’ve noticed that AI tools aren’t actually doing any of this. In fact, they can’t. They are, however, creating and exacerbating very real problems, and all the hype is drowning out the grim reality.
In
The AI Con: How to Fight Big Tech's Hype and Create the Future We Want
,
Dr. Emily M. Bender
, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Washington, and
Dr. Alex Hanna
, Director of Research at the Distributed AI Research Institute, meticulously break down and reconstruct how we think about so-called artificial intelligence and, in doing so, upend the overblown claims of AI hype. With expertise drawn from years of scholarship, Bender and Hanna offer keen perspective and pointed humor as they explain how these technologies actually work. They go on to investigate attempts to use these tools in government, law, healthcare, journalism, art and beyond — and the damage being done amid the broken promises of the technology. And they show how the outlandish claims about AI’s potential and dangers alike are manufactured and perpetuated by the very billionaires who stand to gain the most from a free market embrace of AI. Fortunately, Bender and Hanna also provide a guide that anyone can use to cut through all this AI hype in the workplace, at school, in our communities and at home
