'Rave On for the Avon' Screening with the Final Straw Foundation | Westbourne Club

Westbourne Park
Rave On for the Avon Screening
Date:
15th May 2025
Time:
18:45 for pre-drinks, 19:30 screening start
Location:
Westbourne Club, River Street, Westbourne, PO10 8TG
Film Rating:
12A
Join us for a special screening of
Rave On for the Avon
, an inspiring documentary exploring the intersection of music, community, and environmental activism along the River Avon. This powerful film highlights the urgent need to protect our waterways and the creative movements driving change.
As a small charity dedicated to improving water quality, the Final Straw Foundation is hosting this event to raise awareness and spark conversations about the challenges facing our rivers and coastline. After the screening, we’ll have a discussion about local water quality issues and ways we can take action.
Come along to learn, connect, and be inspired!
From the Filmmakers:
Do humans have the right to nature? In this tender film, Director Charlotte Sawyer tells a story of a community of wild swimmers in Bristol (UK) affected by raw sewage pollution of the river Avon. England is one of the only two countries in the world to have a fully privatised water and sewage disposal system, and with only 14% of English rivers in good ecological health, the mission to keep the rivers clean is not going well.
In a series of moving, exciting and thought-provoking scenes, the swimmers create a stunning, light-hearted yet fascinating tapestry, probing how activism starts from the grassroots, and carries a profound universal lesson for all of us. There’s a marriage to the river, drum’n’bass, a mermaid who tows an inflatable turd, and a whole lot of cheesecake in this poignant reflection on people’s innovative battles for the natural world they cherish.
There will be a bar at the event with the option to purchase drinks. Doors open at 18:45 for pre-drinks, the film will start at 19:30.

42nd Annual Midwest Symposium: Bowen Family Systems Theory and Therapy | In person at First United Methodist Church and Online
May 2, 2025 (UTC-5)
Evanston
Established in 1984 with Murray Bowen as the sole presenter, the symposium has evolved to feature Dan Papero as the primary speaker and, since 1990, a guest scientist each year. The event ensures Bowen family systems theory remains grounded in the natural sciences by inviting experts from fields such as neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, and primatology.
The guest scientist for this year’s symposium is Dr. Patrick McGowan, Professor of Cell and Systems Biology, Psychology and Physiology at the University of Toronto. His area of research has been the epigenetic mechanisms of neurodevelopment and behavior, particularly on the impact of adversity during early development. Dr. McGowan’s specific focus is on the role of parental factors early in life in altering the function of genes involved in the response to stress.
The symposium also features short papers by Bowen theorists and clinicians, covering research, clinical applications, and interdisciplinary integration.
Keynote Presenters:
Daniel V. Papero, PhD, LCSW
Bowen’s research led him to propose that the family functioned as a unit, system or organism. This perspective allowed him to investigate how the unit operated or responded to various challenges that required an adaptive response. Beyond characteristics, Bowen gradually described the processes of response that shape adaptive behavior.
This talk will focus on the functioning of the family system as the unit faces change and challenge. The objective will be to describe the processes within the family system as they operate in response to conditions encountered both within the family system and external to it. The talk will be divided into two parts.
Patrick O. McGowan, PhD
In recent decades a revolution has occurred in our understanding of how experience in the current and previous generations can affect the expression or silencing of genes influencing the development of emotional and physical health throughout the life span. The field of epigenetics has shed light on how the family emotional system can have such a profound influence on the health and behavior of its members. One of the exciting discoveries is that the impact of the epigenetic influence on genes related to early life stressful experiences and intergenerational transmission are potentially reversible.

Reading Modernism's Readers: Virginia Woolf, Psychoanalysis & Bestsellers | The Southern Belle
May 6, 2025 (UTC+1)
Hove
In early twentieth-century literature, scenes of reading offer a fascinating glimpse at how modernist writers viewed the act of reading itself and understood the challenges posed by modernist texts.
In this session, we will be in conversation with Helen Tyson about her 2024 book,
Reading Modernism’s Readers: Virginia Woolf, Psychoanalysis and the Bestseller
. Focusing primarily on the works of Virginia Woolf, Tyson explores scenes of reading in Woolf’s novels alongside writings by Marcel Proust, Ethel M. Dell, Sigmund Freud, James Strachey, Melanie Klein and Marion Milner. She argues that the “staged, fictionalised encounter with literary texts lies at the heart of early twentieth-century culture” and uses this to explore the way that reading is staged in literary modernism, bestselling novels, and psychoanalysis.
In this session, we will discuss psychoanalysis and portraits of the child reader in Woolf, Proust, and Freud; Bestselling romance novels, their readers and the works of Ethel M. Dell; the relationship between reading and redemption in Woolf’s
The Waves
; Woolf’s
The Years
, Milner’s
An Experiment in Leisure
, and the emergence of fascism.

Writing Jewish Novels: An Author Talk With Tova Mirvis and Elizabeth Graver | Hummingbird Books
May 6, 2025 (UTC-4)
Newton
Join Hummingbird Books and Hadassah to learn about writing Jewish novels from "We Would Never" author Tova Mirvis and "Kantika" author Elizabeth Graver. This event will include an interview, audience Q+A, and book signing.
Tickets:
$32 - Includes a copy of "We Would Never"
$18 - Admission Only
About We Would Never:
A riveting literary page-turner
that explores the extremes to which a family will go to protect their own—for fans of Miranda Cowley Heller and Laura Dave.
No one is more surprised than Hailey Gelman when she comes under suspicion for the murder of her soon-to-be ex-husband Jonah. Hailey—nicknamed Sunshine by her mother for her bright outlook and ever-present smile—is the peacemaker who has always tried to do what her family expects of her.
The months leading up to Jonah’s death have been fraught, including a bitter separation and a messy custody battle over their young daughter, Maya. When Hailey files a motion to relocate to Florida so she can be near her family, the divorce begins to escalate, drawing in all the members of Hailey’s family, who are determined to help her however they can.
Most invested is Sherry, Hailey’s mother who wants nothing more than to be close to her family. Then there’s Nate, Hailey’s devoted and protective older brother, as well as the patriarch, Solomon, who is keeping a secret of his own that threatens the stability and security Sherry has worked so hard to maintain. As the divorce spirals dangerously out of control, they are all forced to consider just how far they will go for each other.
Part gripping mystery, part compassionate family drama,
We Would Never
explores what people are capable of when they feel cornered, and how, in the absence of forgiveness, love and hate can intertwine and turn deadly.
About Kantika:
A dazzling Sephardic multigenerational saga that moves from Istanbul to Barcelona, Havana, and New York, exploring displacement, endurance, and family as home.
A kaleidoscopic portrait of one family’s displacement across four countries,
Kantika
—“song” in Ladino—follows the joys and losses of Rebecca Cohen, feisty daughter of the Sephardic elite of early 20th-century Istanbul. When the Cohens lose their wealth and are forced to move to Barcelona and start anew, Rebecca fashions a life and self from what comes her way—a failed marriage, the need to earn a living, but also passion, pleasure and motherhood. Moving from Spain to Cuba to New York for an arranged second marriage, she faces her greatest challenge—her disabled stepdaughter, Luna, whose feistiness equals her own and whose challenges pit new family against old.
Exploring identity, place and exile,
Kantika
also reveals how the female body—in work, art and love—serves as a site of both suffering and joy. A haunting, inspiring meditation on the tenacity of women, this lush, lyrical novel from Elizabeth Graver celebrates the insistence on seizing beauty and grabbing hold of one’s one and only life.

About Hadassah Boston:
Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc., was founded over a century ago, before Israel was a state, and before women could vote. Since that time, the organization has remained unwavering in its commitment to women’s health and well-being, to Israel, and to Jewish values and continuity. But while Hadassah’s heritage and mission remain as strong as ever, the role of women and Jewish culture here and in Israel, has evolved over time. The organization, too, has evolved, taking on new challenges and developing new programs.
Hadassah believes in building a world where our Jewish values in action create strong community and an enduring Israel. That’s why our entire focus is on connecting and empowering Jewish women to effect change. We’ve done this for over 100 years and we will do it for the next 100—advancing health and well-being, advocating for women, and building community in the US and Israel. We invite all women who share our interests and passions to join in—to put their values into actions with us and through our programs.
