This is an ensemble with a vast emotional range, brought together by their collective love of song and a powerful spirit of collaboration. Small Print (a nod to their larger Printmakers ensemble) sets out to cross many musical boundaries; with themes of obsession, murder, migration, home and first love, they present a brilliant unity of concept and sound, delivered with honesty and stunning clarity and all bought together with their collective love of songs.
Award winning pianist/composer Nikki Iles is one of the heroines of British jazz. She has made an invaluable contribution to the jazz scene in this country and beyond, whilst also making a very personal musical statement in many groups, not least her own superb Anglo-American trio with Rufus Reid and Jeff Williams and as Composer in Residence withe NDR Big band in Hamburg.
Grammy nominated and ECM recording artist Norma Winstone MBE, pioneering innovator of the voice, has been a leading light in European music for many years. She collaborated with Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor in Azimuth, and has also worked with Fred Hersch, Steve Swallow, Jimmy Rowles, Mike Gibbs and Ralph Towner. Her music has in recent years found new collaborators and listeners, with three superb award-winning ECM releases in trio with European musicians Klaus Gesing and Glauco Venier.
Mike Walker is rightly regarded as one of Europe's most exciting guitarists - always passionate, dangerous and highly inventive. He has worked with some of the most innovative musicians in the world, including George Russell, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Julian Arguelles and Gwilym Simcock.
Bassist Steve Watts has been the all-important linchpin in many significant bands in British Jazz, including Django Bates’ Human Chain, and with Kenny Wheeler and Stan Sulzmann. He has also worked with Iain Ballamy and Kirk Lightsey and Joe Lovano.
“
In the old days, this band would have had the words
‘
All-Stars
’
in their name. Every one of them is a leading figure in British contemporary jazz. Together, they create evocative sound-pictures of places and times.
It’s
remarkable how just three instruments and voice can suggest space and depth as they do
.” - Dave Gelly, The Observer.

Did you know there were 6 Chinese survivors on the
Titanic
?
Join us in the basement of
SEESAW
on
24th
May
2025 for
ECHO (ESEA Collective: History, Over here)
! We aim to uncover and retell the stories of these men - originally eight of them - whose lives were changed forever aboard one of the worst and most famous ocean-bound disasters of all time. And whose lives were mostly forgotten.
Until recently.
The nine Asian passengers - including one Japanese man - faced persecution and vilification, simply for being men and people of colour who had somehow been on board when fellow passengers, the press and the public think they shouldn't have and survived instead of others.
But beyond their treatment and their lives before and after the
Titanic
, we look at how perceptions of them and laws against Asian people at the time shaped other key moments within
British history
. From the repatriation of Chinese seamen following both World Wars to the journeys of Vietnamese refugees and from the stateless Malaysian nationals to the experiences of Filipino domestic workers, we will showcase some intriguing yet often forgotten stories from different British ESEA communities.
Please see the agenda for more information.
All tickets
come with online access to the online Q&A with the author and director of
"The Six"
book and documentary research team on
2nd May

A celebration of one of the foremost proponents of spiritual jazz, Alice Coltrane, performed by a stellar ensemble that unites legendary and emerging talents. Music of transcendence and hope that shifts, as
Jazzwise
noted, "from the modal to the meditative, leaving the audience with a lasting impression of using spiritual power for personal and collective betterment."
Alina Bzhezhinska has collaborated with some of the biggest names in jazz, appearing on Shabaka's solo debut
Afrikan Culture
and Ganavya’s
Forgive Me Mine
. Her recent records,
Reflections
and
Altera Vita
have been warmly received by critics, the latter hailed as "a take-your-breath-away masterpiece" by Downbeat Magazine.
Brian Jackson's legacy speaks for itself: his legendary collaborations include Gil Scott-Heron, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire and Roy Ayers and he is the composer and keyboardist behind timeless classics
Bridges
and
Winter in America.
His 2022 solo album,
This Is Brian Jackson
, marked a powerful return—showcasing his signature fusion of jazz, soul, and storytelling.
Tony Kofi is a multi-award winning saxophonist with a recording career that has seen collaborations with Donald Byrd, Eddie Henderson, Abdullah Ibrahim, Cymande and Ornette Coleman. Kofi’s solo work, in particular his 2020 album
A Different Kind Of Soul
and his recently reissued
Plays Monk,
cement his reputation as one of the UK’s most accomplished saxophonists.
Menelik Claffey is a recent jazz graduate from Trinity Laban and member of the Tomorrow’s Warriors Quintet, having performed at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the Barbican, Southbank Centre and, in 2024, at the invitation of D0wning Street to celebrate Black History Month.
Matthew Holmes is a drummer, composer and educator regularly featured at The Barbican, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Pizza Express Soho, The Southbank Centre and Cafe OTO, as well as on ITV, Channel 5, BBC Radio 6, Jazz FM, Scala Radio and Worldwide FM.
Please note: this event replaces the performance by Steam Down originally scheduled for 24 May, which has been cancelled for reasons beyond our control. Any tickets already purchased for that event will be fully refunded.

Camilla George is a visionary saxophonist, composer, bandleader and innovator. Her strong cultural roots and love of fusing African and Western Music has informed her own style, a key reason why she is a firm fixture on the new London Jazz scene, alongside peers such as Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings. Her music is a hypnotising blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz, with a politically-minded subtext that has a powerful connection to her Nigerian identity, lineage and heritage, reflecting African history, culture and slavery.
Born in Eket, Nigeria, Camilla has been interested in music from an early age and particularly in the fusion of African and Western music. She grew up listening to Fela Kuti, as well as Jackie McLean and Charlie Parker. She began playing the saxophone aged 11 years old, when she won a music contest where the prize awarded her saxophone lessons.
Her most recent album,
Ibio
Ibio
, is a tribute to her tribe, the Ibibio people of South Eastern Coastal Nigeria. “
George is the undoubted star, delivering criss-crossing solos with a ‘50s
hard-bop
bent
.” - Mojo Magazine,
Camilla won Best Jazz Act at the 2023 Urban Music Awards, performed in the Jazz Refreshed showcase for SXSW, (filmed at Abbey Road studios) and reached the final in the DC Jazz Prix in 2021.
Recent notable performances include North Sea Jazz Festival, (where Camilla performed with her own group and as a featured artist in the Diaspora Suite performance); Jazz a Vienne (where Camilla sat in with Marcus Miller) and EFG London Jazz Festival.
A festival favourite, Camilla makes a welcome return to mjf with her latest quartet.

Aerial Soundbath | Bodybarre Manchester ☆ Pole + Burlesque + Aerial Studio ☆
May 24, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Manchester
Surrender to gravity and control and float your way back into harmony.
Retune mind, body and breath in a relaxing hammock to the soothing sound of the GONG...
Come meet new people, and enjoy an experience in a deeply healing self care practice and sound meditation with medicinal and purifying incense to engage your senses. You will leave feeling balanced and re-energised.
The gong resonates, at 432 Hz which is backed by science showing to help lower stress levels and is known for its deeply calming and soothing effects.
Sound meditation is beneficial for
Creators'/writers block
Emotional/energetic blocks
Pain management
Relational issues
Stress/ Burnout
Personal/ spiritual development
Some experiences during soundsbaths include:
Synesthesia
- the merging of two or more of the senses, being able to taste colours, hear shapes etc
Altered states of consciousness
- The frequency of the gongs are able to alter our brainwave state, via entrainment, which brings our breathing and heart rate in sync with the gong. Our body temperature naturally lowers and our brainwaves move from beta (alert thinking) to alpha (day dreaming), theta and delta ( deep meditative states), which can result in experiening an altered state of consciousness, accessing the subconscious mind and our dreams.
Increased creative and intuitive thoughts
- As our brainwave state merges with the frequency of the gongs, our left side of the brain (logic and analysis) quietens down, as the soundwaves are too complex for this side of the brain to analyse and compartmentalise. The right side of the brain (creative and intuitive) awakens, this is where we can experience epiphanies and access our creativity/imagination, dreams and come up with new ideas and solutions.
Emotional/energetic releases -
The healing frequencies produced by the gong can bring up un expressed/acknowledged emotions and feelings to the surface that we may have repressed and not processed. Which may be experienced as the feeling of tearfulness or emotional intensity. This is nothing to be alarmed about, and not something to expect during a gong bath, but rather to be aware of that if it does, to:
1. Be kind and gentle to yourself and bring your attention back to the breath
2. Allow the emotion to move through you, observe it without judgement, identification or attachment, remembering -
' I am experiencing....this emotion' and not ' I am the emotion'
It is our judgement and non-acceptance of emotions that causes the dissonance.
Emotions are energy in motion and just want to be witnessed and integrated as part of the human experience.
When we acknowledge, allow and accept whatever comes up for us, it is then integrated and its intensity released and dissipates.

What better way to bring mjf's 30th anniversary celebrations to a rip-roaring close: it’s all about the good times!
Formed in 1991 by Gary Crosby OBE – bassist, band leader and nephew of Jamaica’s legendary guitarist Ernest Ranglin – the mighty Jazz Jamaica have rightly earned their reputation as
"one of the UK’s leading good-time bands"
(The Independent)
from their many exuberant live performances and dynamic album releases over the past three decades.
Crosby's concept was to create a quintessential fusion of mento, ska, reggae, and jazz, playing classic and modern jazz standards alongside Jamaican folksongs, and it is his leadership and drive that continues to ensure the evolution of Jazz Jamaica. The band has grown in members and repertoire, filling concert halls and delighting audiences across the country with tours of Catch A Fire, a celebration of the music of Bob Marley, and The Trojan Story, which featured many of the best-loved tunes from the seminal Trojan Records label.
“Jazz Jamaica…Well known for blowing the roof off live shows. A joyful, cosmopolitan tribute.” - Jazzwise
“Jazz Jamaica should be permanent ambassadors to the United Nations of Good Times.” -
Cheltenham Jazz Festival
“Britain’s finest big band.”

Gwilym Simcock
piano
This new duo brings together the talents of celebrated pianist and composer Gwilym Simcock and rising star saxophonist and composer Emma Rawicz. This musical collaboration has a special depth and freedom that has blossomed in just a short space of time, maturing rapidly into a unique and exciting musical force. Emma and Gwilym have composed for each other and collaborated on arrangements, drawing on the many common influences they share. Such has been the success of this musical venture, they have already been into the studio to record their first album as a duo, for the prestigious ACT label.
Emma and Gwilym will be performing music from their release, including original works and arrangements of a variety of other music from the Great American Songbook to Stevie Wonder! Their collaboration has been a cross-generational revelation, but an unsurprising success - given they both had a similar classical and jazz training at the prestigious Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and Royal Academy of Music in London. The duo’s connection as labelmates makes a collaboration even more fitting, and they are very excited to see where their adventure will take them.
Their love of engaging, energetic and joyful music is evident throughout this set, and the intimate chamber concert is a perfect setting for this very special duo.

About the book:
You're nine when you get your first computer. It's not long before you discover porn. You don't know what you're watching, but you do know that you shouldn't tell anybody.
Later, older, your first kiss is captured on camera and shared with everyone in your year. Part of the incessant cycle of posting, sharing and liking.
Now, you can't remember a time when you didn't feel hollow inside. Now, you know that something has to change.
Chilling, potent and intensely intimate,
This Is How You Remember It
is about a life lived online - and about finding another way when it's all you've ever known.
"It is an essential document. I wish it wasn't. I'm so glad it exists." - Jo Hamya,
The
Guardian
