Picks from PIX: Aboriginal lives | State Library of New South Wales
Jul 10, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Sydney
Discover the incredible stories of the people and pictures that made the magazine PIX — Australia’s first pictorial news weekly. The first edition of PIX in 1938 included Australian circus performer Con Colleano, a Bundjalung man from Lismore. He was one of many Indigenous Australians included in PIX over the years. PIX photographers often ventured to the outback documenting their encounters with interesting characters and their stories. Stories from PIX gave many white Australians a rare insight into contemporary Aboriginal lives. This event is in connection with the Library’s exhibition, PIX: The magazine that changed everything (1938–72). Ronald Briggs (Gamilaroi) is originally from Moree in central north-western NSW. Trained as a schoolteacher before beginning work as Indigenous Services Librarian at the State Library of New South Wales since 1991, Ronald is a keen family historian. He has also worked with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. 2025 Sunset Kino Film Festival: Program by Rabih Mroué | Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens
Jul 10, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Oakville
Sunset Kino
is Canada's only outdoor, avant-garde film festival. Introduced by the programmers and commencing at sunset, audiences experience a curated program of films and videos by Canadian and international artists.
All films are screened outdoors in Gairloch Gardens. Please dress appropriately and bring seating and blankets. With inclement weather, screenings will be indoors in the Studio, adjacent to the Gallery.
Each Sunset Kino evening, artist Faisal Anwar presents tailored
projection performances
ahead of the curated program.
Films by Rabih Mroué
Programmed by Séamus Kealy
Face A, Face B,
Rabih Mroué, 2002, 10 minutes
Rabih Mroue's Face A/Face B is constructed around a 1978 sound recording by Mroue and his brother; using virtually no images, this short piece is an intimate record of a family's life affected by loss and the political ideals of the Lebanese Civil War. A metaphysical film exploring the nature of memory and knowledge, sight and sound, physical evidence and identity, and recollection and survival. Acclaimed Lebanese stage and performance director and actor Rabih Mroué leads us on a seemingly autobiographical journey from his childhood, through the Lebanese civil war, to his present as he searches for meaning among the fragments of his memory, cassette tapes, and photos.
With Soul, With Blood
, Rabih Mroué, 2003, 10 minutes
The tension between "I" and "we" is at the heart of democratic life. How to be in a collective without erasing one’s individuality? This film focuses on Mroué’s search for his own unique voice, values, and ideas within a group context, while considering the intentional or unintentional overshadowing of others.
Shooting Images,
Rabih Mroué, 2012, 9 minutes
Rabih Mroué was particularly struck by a sentence he encountered:“The Syrian protesters are recording their own deaths”. Mroué confronts a harrowing group of videos in which we witness a Syrian protester being shot by one of the regime’s soldier forces. These videos show the moments of
eye contact
between the killer and his victim, when the gun’s line of sight and the camera’s lens meet.
Cheers to Our Wishes,
Rabih Mroué, 2020, 15 minutes
For Haus der Kulturen der Welt’s series of online commissions, ‘CC: World’ (2020), Mroué created
Cheers to our Wishes
(2020). This video essay combines an adaptation of Antonin Artaud’s story on the oriental plague, an email correspondence between Mroué and his doctor concerning an infection in his way of seeing and a video-letter to his sister in which he reflects on a family gathering.
Footnotes
, Rabih Mroué, 2016, 50 minutes
In
Footnotes of an Unwritten Text About War, Body and Theatre
(2014–16), Rabih Mroué addresses his own experiences of war and its lingering aftermaths. The work collects visual footnotes, unfinished thoughts and outtakes from years of living and working in his home country of Lebanon; references to civil war and displacement are frequent, as well as broader questions about living and dying and the strange commune between. Footnotes was largely completed during Rabih Mroue´s fellowship at the International Research Center: Interweaving Performance Cultures/FU/Berlin, 2013-2014, and was completed in 2016 for the Wiesbaden Biennale/Germany.

Come join us for an exciting summer camp focused on
Robotics
and
Coding

STEM
and have a blast exploring the possibilities of
Robotics
and
Coding
. Don't let your kids miss out on this awesome opportunity to expand their skills and have fun!
What do kids learn in our Summer Camp?
I (an experienced engineer) and my son (an engineering student at Purdue) have created our own robots from custom-crafted wooden and 3D printed pieces. They are specifically designed to inspire creativity in kids. Kids will engage in many hands-on activities that are building blocks of a fully functional robot. They will learn about various components they need to build a robot, how each component works, how they all fit together to make a robot. They will learn about using motors (180 degrees and 360 degrees) to create various movements. They will learn programming concepts for robotics. They will learn to control various movements of a robot, range of movement, speed of movements etc..Some of the initial activities (but not limited to) include:
Build a Robotics Gate, Traffic Light Controller, and Windmill. Here is a
YouTube Video
Operate a Robotic Gate using a single 180 motor and code
Control a traffic light 3 LEDs (Red, Green, Yellow) using code
Operate a windmill using 360 degrees motor and code (control speed and direction)
Control multiple components using a single microcontroller and code
Learn to write code using various examples to make the robot do different actions and see results immediately
Project:
After doing the activities listed above, they will get a pretty good understanding of how the core components work and how to write code to control them. They will then build a fully functional robot that plays the drum. They will build this in 3 phases and learn coding that goes with each phase. And finally they will get to tweak the code or write their own code to make the robot play different drum beats. Basically, they will learn to create their own music.
Here is the
YouTube Video of the Drumming Robot
they will build and program.
