The Hawaii Okinawa Festival is an annual cultural celebration held in the state of Hawaii, USA, to celebrate and promote the traditions and culture of Okinawa. The festival usually includes a variety of activities such as traditional dance performances, music performances, handicraft demonstrations, and Okinawan food stalls. Participants can experience the cultural characteristics of Okinawa, including karate demonstrations, Ryukyu dances, and sanshin instrument performances. This festival not only attracts the local Okinawan community, but also many tourists and people interested in Okinawan culture. The Merwin Conservancy will present a reading and talk with award-winning poet, theologian, and mediator Pádraig Ó Tuama in partnership with the Honolulu Museum of Art . This program is part of The Merwin Conservancy’s series of popular arts and ecology literary events known as The Green Room . Pádraig Ó Tuama (b. 1975 Cork, Ireland) is a poet with interests in conflict, language and religion. He presents Poetry Unbound from On Being Studios, and has published two anthologies (2022, 2025, both with WW Norton) from that podcast. In early 2025 Copper Canyon Press published Kitchen Hymns, his fourth poetry collection. A freelance artist, one of Ó Tuama’s projects is poet in residence with the Cooperation and Conflict Resolution Center at Columbia University. He splits his time between Belfast and New York City. Markings of Legacy: Script, Skin, and Spirit is a community-centered gathering presented by House of Gongs in collaboration with the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, bringing together Filipino ancestral practices of batok (hand-tap tattooing) and baybayin (pre-colonial script) in conversation with living cultural bearers and tradition keepers both from the Philippines and the Filipino American Diasporic community. The event features a live batok demonstration, a cultural exchange through baybayin, and a special performance by the Braddah Ash, House of Gongs and University of Hawai‘i Kulintang Ensemble. All participants will be required to show proof of age at event or you will not be allowed to participate and no refund will be provided. WHAT TO EXPECT: When you arrive at the speed dating event please check in at the Event table. You will be given a name tag, pen, a score card, and a cheat sheet (conversation starters). On this score card is where you will write names to everyone you meet and circle yes if it’s a match or no if it’s a pass. At the end of the event return your score card to your host and within 72 hours you will receive an email with everyone’s first name and email address that you matched with. If you did not circle yes but a yes was circled for you, we believe in second chances. You will be provided with that individuals’ first name and email address and have the opportunity to reach out if you please. It is very important that you arrive at 6:00 pm the speed dating will start promptly at 6:30pm as speed dating requires all participating members to be available for it to work successfully.
