Folk and fairy tales are deeply embedded in contemporary culture, influencing storytelling across media. The image of a red cloak in a forest, for example, instantly recalls Little Red Riding Hood, a story passed down through generations. But what makes these tales so enduring? In this talk, our guest speaker Dr Alastair Daniel explores their origins in oral tradition and examines what makes them stick . He will look at the key characteristics of these stories, revealing how they reflect the values, fears, and desires of the societies from which they came. Alastair will also explore how common themes and archetypal characters highlight universal human traits. Additionally, he will discuss how these tales have been reimagined for modern audiences while preserving their original essence, shaping our understanding of human nature, morality, and culture. Dr Alastair K. Daniel is an artist educator, performance storyteller and independent scholar working in the UK and abroad. He gives storytelling performances for adults and children, teaches storytelling and its application in educational contexts and advises organisations on the strategic use of storytelling and narrative communication. Alongside his work as a storyteller, Alastair has many years of experience working in educational settings as a class teacher, consultant and university academic - finishing his term as the Principal Lecturer in Early Years and Primary Education at the University of Roehampton (London) in 2022. As a storyteller, Alastair’s performances are characterised by an interactive and conversational style through which a continuing back-and-forth with his audience breaks down expectations around the roles of teller and listener. Alastair co-convenes both the Storytellers in Schools Forum and the UK Literacy Association’s Storytelling Special Interest Group and is the education lead on the board of the Society for Storytelling. November 21, 2024, 7:00 PM The Bulgarian Cultural Institute London is pleased to invite you to the exhibition of Andrey Lekarski - Painting and Sculpture. Special guests: Andrey Lekarski During the exhibition, you will have the opportunity to watch the film about Andrey Lekarski, titled Bread of Bronze, written and directed by Yuri Dachev. After the official opening, you will also be able to view the exhibition and enjoy a glass of Bulgarian wine. Andrey Lekarski is one of the most significant contemporary artists with an impressive international career. As early as 1975, his exhibition at the prestigious Lilian François gallery in Paris attracted the attention of influential critics and media outlets such as L’Art Vivant and Le Quotidien de Paris. They described his works as a fresh breath of air for viewers craving art with deep meaning and visual appeal. Lekarski skillfully combines surrealistic tones with an original technique, close to photography, which sets him apart in the art world. Over the years, Lekarski became known for his reckless sculptures, as Le Monde de l’Art calls them. By blending the irony of traditional forms with oversized everyday objects, he achieves a balance between satire and the deep drama of the human body and soul. His sculptures, such as Apollo’s Foot and The Hand of Fate, create powerful symbols of transition and freedom, recognized in international art events and exhibitions across Europe. His unconventional approach to classical aesthetics and ability to inject humor and new life into established beauty standards make him one of the most original artists of our time. Lekarski’s works not only rethink tradition but also challenge viewers to reflect on the meaning of life and art. He masterfully balances intellectual playfulness and emotional depth, making him an exceptional figure not only in Bulgaria but across Europe. Bread of Bronze is a documentary portrait of the internationally renowned Bulgarian artist and sculptor Andrey Lekarski. His works are part of the collections of prestigious galleries around the world, especially in France, where he has lived for over 50 years. In 2015, Lekarski held his first solo exhibition in Bulgaria. The film follows his rich life, spanning different eras and countries, with Lekarski humorously describing himself as a nomad. He shares his thoughts on the commercial side of art and recounts a recent incident in Bulgaria where part of his bronze bread series was stolen. People have been telling stories for as long as there has been language. In this talk, Alastair, an experienced public speaker and educator, starts by asking what evolutionary drive led humans to use story to shape experience. From this beginning, he takes his audience on a journey from ancient myths and legends all the way to contemporary approaches to oral storytelling, via the storytelling revival in the 20th century. En route, Alastair will draw on his experience as a performance storyteller to explore the connections between everyday tales that people tell during casual conversation and storytelling as an art form - as well as what makes the oral tradition distinct from the written word. Alastair K. Alastair co-convenes both the Storytellers in Schools Forum and the UK Literacy Association’s Storytelling Special Interest Group, and is the education lead on the board of the Society for Storytelling. He is an Honorary Senior Fellow of the University of Roehampton and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. At the End of the World , Contemporary Poetry from Bulgaria, Shearsman Books, 2012. Emmanuel Cooper Memorial Lecture 2025 - Julian Stair | Lecture Theatre 1, Royal College of Art (Please enter through Jay Mews entrance)

Craft
Julian Stair is one of the UK’s leading ceramic artists, exhibiting internationally since 1982 and with work in over 30 public collections including the V&A, British Museum, American Museum of Art & Design, Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art, Japan, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Kolumba Museum, Cologne, and the Crafts Study Centre. In the lecture Stair will argue that the multi-modality of ceramics, and pottery in particular, operates as a significant artistic genre within the theoretical framework and praxis of contemporary art. In actively shaping experience through rituals that both embody and conceptualise narratives from the quotidian to the profound, from ‘breaking bread’ to mediating death, Stair situates pottery as providing an opportunity for philosophical re-evaluation of how institutions validate, and markets consume, art. In our increasingly atomised existence (through the advent of the metaverse), the materiality, agency and social locus of pottery remind us what it means to be human.
