Kerri Andrews - Pathfinding (Wetherby bookshop) | Kemps On The Corner (Bookshop)
May 2, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Wetherby
The desire to walk is something that defines us as human beings, bringing joy and connection and freedom. But what happens to all this when we become mothers? In the wake of the complete metamorphosis of becoming a mother, Kerri Andrews determines to undertake a series of journeys on foot to understand what has happened to her. Come and hear Kerri’s story. Alongside a backpack full of supplies, Kerri carries with her the shadow of post-natal depression and the idea that maybe the hills are no longer for those, like her, who bear the mental and physical scars of childbearing and childrearing. Yet, what she soon discovers are tales of mother-walkers that have long been neglected or hidden away. From Mary Wollstonecraft and Ellen Weeton to Kate Chopin, here are women whose post-partum stories are urgently pertinent as they show us how to step into new ways of living with motherhood.

Stephen May - Green Ink (Wetherby bookshop) | Kemps On The Corner (Bookshop)
May 8, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Wetherby
A brilliantly intelligent and irreverent novel of politicians, spies and lovers—inspired by a true historical story. David Lloyd George is at Chequers for the weekend with his mistress, fretting about the fact that his involvement in selling public honours is about to be revealed by one Victor Grayson. Whatever the truth about what happened next, Green Ink imagines what might have been with brio, humour and humanity; and is a reminder that the past was once as alive as we are today. “Stephen May has a nose for fascinating historical events” The Times, Best Books of 2025 “The spry, sardonic voice of the new historical fiction” Hilary Mantel Book

Site Visit to British Library at Boston Spa | The British Library
May 12, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Wetherby
The British Library at Boston Spa is expanding its capacity, as the national collection grows. Every year three million new items are added to the archive, as it receives a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland. More space is required to house the, year on year increase of 12kms of shelving.
To that end, the Boston Spa Renewed programme seeks to increase the archives capacity and services, by transforming the campus and becoming ‘the most sustainable archive in the world’.
The scheme involves the construction of a new 28m high, 5274m2 ground-breaking, fully automated net zero carbon archive building, which will feature a public viewing gallery and 220km of extra shelf space. Nothing like this archive has been built in the UK before, where the environment is completely airtight, and when complete, a fully automated racking and robotics system will be used to retrieve documents.
Sustainability will be an integral feature of this ambitious programme, including the creation of new and improved green spaces to support biodiversity and enhance the natural environment surrounding the site.
Wates, one of UK’s leading family-owned development, building and property maintenance companies, is the appointed contractor and has been working closely with the team on site in Boston Spa to deliver this ground breaking project.

The Ghost Lake - Wendy Pratt (Wetherby bookshop) | Kemps Bookshop & General Store
May 17, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Wetherby
The Ghost Lake is a deeply personal, lyrical and stirring meditation on local history and changing landscapes that intertwines nature writing with an exploration of grief, belonging, and the lives and legacies of rural working-class people. Paleolake Flixton is an extinct lake in North Yorkshire, human occupation of the site dates back thousands of years to prehistoric times. Over the millennia, the vast lake has disappeared and today all that is left of it is a watermark. Wendy will take her audience on a pilgrimage around this ghost lake, to locations that have acted as journey markers in her own life. Join Kemps own Rebecca Coxon for an evening of insightful conversation around this wonderful book. This event will be perfect for lovers of local history and memoir.

Wildly Different by Sarah Lonsdale (Wetherby bookshop) | Kemps On The Corner (Bookshop)
May 22, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Wetherby
PLEASE NOTE BOOK & TICKET IS £20 not £11
For millennia the ‘wild’ was a place heroic men
went on epic quests. In Wildly different, historian
Sarah Lonsdale traces the lives of five women who
fought for the right to work in, enjoy and help to
save the earth’s wild places.
We’ll meet Mina Hubbard, who outraged the exploration
community when she stepped into a canoe in northern
Labrador. Evelyn Cheesman, who became the first female
keeper of insects at London Zoo. Dorothy Pilley, who shocked
polite society by donning men’s climbing breeches.
Ethel Haythornthwaite, who helped make the Peak District
Britain’s first National Park. And Wangari Maathai, who started
a movement to plant millions of trees across sub-Saharan Africa.
Drawing on interviews with Sir David Attenborough, Wangari
Maathai’s daughter and others, Lonsdale recounts the women’s
adventures across five continents. Evocative and inspiring,
this book shows how women can be ‘wildly different’.
Join Rebecca Coxon from Kemps in conversation with
Sarah about these fascinating women.
