Voicing The Real: Teaching in Role | IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society
Jun 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bedford
Voicing The Real: Teaching in Role Voicing The Real builds on the work of the NATD’s Being In Role conference, exploring how educators can use Teacher in Role to guide young people in fictional worlds that help them make sense of the chaotic world around them. At a time of rising exclusions, relentless exposure to social media and the misinformation it propagates amid increasing incidents of racism, homophobia, sexism and violence in schools, educators face the challenge of addressing difficult topics while navigating the demand for political neutrality. This one day event positions education as a political act, drawing on Dorothy Heathcote’s Teacher in Role to create spaces where polarising voices can be brought into the classroom—not to be endorsed, but to be interrogated safely. By bringing that which we do not understand into classrooms to explain itself, we empower students to critically engage with challenging perspectives within the safety of role. Through practical sessions, participants will explore how to facilitate meaningful, structured encounters with difficult subject matter, equipping young people with the tools to question, analyse, and ultimately, better understand the world around them.
