MetroStage at the Lyceum: A reading of The Island by Athol Fugard | The Lyceum: Alexandria's History Museum
Apr 16, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Alexandria A
MetroStage presents The Island, an iconic play, honoring Athol Fugard. Join us as we pay tribute to the greatest South African playwright and to MetroStage’s history and their commitment to producing his work.
It is the early 1970’s. John and Winston are two political prisoners in apartheid South Africa. The setting is Robben Island off the coast but within sight of their homeland. An iconic play that Athol Fugard devised with John Kani and Winston Ntshona, that MetroStage produced in both 1990 and 2015.
Since Mr. Fugard died this past March, MetroStage is honored to pay tribute to his body of work and present a reading of this extraordinary play. By depicting these political prisoners, their bond, and their commitment to telling the classic story of “Antigone” for their fellow prisoners, Fugard has created a dramatic and historic masterpiece. As MetroStage director Thomas W. Jones II described, the play depicts “themes of solidarity, endurance, perseverance (that) are timeless”, and a “celebration of human dignity and freedom in the face of insurmountable oppression.”
"This reflects a very important part of MetroStage’s history since we produced many of Mr. Fugard’s plays over the last 30 years. We are proud to pay tribute to his work and the tremendous contribution he made during the years of apartheid and beyond with a reading of The Island, featuring two of MetroStage’s favorite actors who have performed in his plays for MetroStage productions." Here’s what you need to know:
Each class revolves around a theme or type of flower. For example, ‘Peonies’ or ‘Jewel Toned Blooms’. The images on our website are representative of what a design might look like, but are not exact. In order to get you the most product, we hold off on ordering until a week before class to see what is available at the best price from our wholesalers. In classes that revolve around a certain flower, such as peonies, you can expect to be making a mixed bouquet highlighting that flower.
For our IN STUDIO workshops:
Each class comes with a bucket full of blooms. We account for breakage and loss in our formulas, so please understand that if you happen to have one or two unusable blooms, there are still more than enough blooms to fill out your arrangement.
You will also be provided with your vase, clippers, a list of included blooms, and any hard goods you may need.
If something comes up and you are no longer able to take the class, please give us 7 days notice. We’re happy to transfer you into any future workshop or provide a refund. If we are notified less than seven days in advance we may not be able to provide a refund.
When parking at the studio, there is street parking, and a small lot down the street that are both free to use and available for attendees
Studio doors will open 15 minutes prior to arrival
Our workshop space is a cozy fit, so we are unable to accomodate any additional guests who have not purchased a ticket, and unfortunately at this time, children aren't invited to attend.
Workshops are an hour to 90 minutes in length - after class is over, we ask that you depart in a timely fashion so our instructor can head home and rest before work the following day.
PLEASE NOTE. This is an IN-STUDIO WORKSHOP, starting at 6:30 pm at our studio location in Alexandria, VA. This is not a virtual workshop and no recordings will be available.
Cheers to a lovely flower class together!

With April being National Poetry Month, it’s a perfect time to celebrate Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department for our Eras book club! Swiftie teens (and their parents, if they like) are invited to join us for a discussion of Erin Stewart’s critically acclaimed novel,
The Words We Keep

a beautifully relatable story about mental health and the healing powers of art–specifically, words-blackout poetry. As always, we will listen to the album’s music and make themed friendship bracelets as we chat about the book.
Tickets are $5 to cover material costs. Every participant must purchase a ticket. Mention the book club at the shop or order online and note “book club” to get 10% off!

About the book…
A beautifully realistic, relatable story about mental health and the healing powers of art—perfect for fans of
Girl in Pieces
and
How It Feels to Float
.
It's been three months since the Night on the Bathroom Floor—when Lily found her older sister Alice hurting herself. Ever since then, Lily has been desperately trying to keep things together, for herself and for her family. But now Alice is coming home from her treatment program, and it is becoming harder for Lily to ignore all of the feelings she's been trying to outrun.
Enter Micah, a new student at school with a past of his own. He was in treatment with Alice and seems determined to get Lily to process not only Alice's experience, but her own. Because Lily has secrets, too. Compulsions she can't seem to let go of and thoughts she can't drown out.
When Lily and Micah embark on an art project for school involving finding poetry in unexpected places, she realizes that it's the words she's been swallowing that desperately want to break through.
