Shakespeare and the Slovenian School | Garrick's Temple to Shakespeare

Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Hampton
Arts
Theater
Shakespeare has always been a reference point for the Slovenian School of Psychoanalysis, which grew out of dissident movements in socialist Yugoslavia. Freud’s and Lacan’s interpretations of Hamlet have been a particular focus, the title of one of Slavoj Žižek’s early books, “Looking Awry,” is taken from Richard II, and other members of the School often use Shakespeare to think through the role of representation in politics and culture. Moreover, the Slovenian School has often been involved in Shakespeare-influenced theatre projects, for instance the projects of the “Scipion Nasice Sisters Theatre” (SNST), and the “Macbeth” production by Wilfried Minks and Peter Zadek. As SNST co-founder Eda Čufer writes, “Shakespeare exposed the theatrical aspects of establishing and transgressing the law, and made transparent the structural similarities between the 'deeds' of legal authorities, criminals (terrorists) and artists (activists).” This symposium will explore the complex history of this statement and its relevance for the relation between theatre and philosophy in the present. There are four types of tickets available: - £20 ticket (+Eventbrite fee) includes admission, sandwich lunch at the Bell Inn as well as tea and coffee during breaks. NOTE: due to catering demands the sale of ticket ends a week before the event. - £10 ticket includes admission, tea and coffee during breaks - Online ticket, free, possibility to donate to the Temple - Community ticket: a limited number of tickets available for those unable to pay. Please note this does not include lunch. The event will be partially hybrid (one session) and as a whole will be streamed via Zoom. All proceeds go to the Temple. Preliminary programme: 10-11 (Chair: Björn Quiring) Short intro Gregor Moder: Caesar’s Wounds 11-11:30 Coffe/tea 11:30-13:15 (Chair: Julia Ng) 11:30-12:15 Dominik Finkelde: The Remains of Richard II: Santner and Žižek on Political Flesh 12:15-13:15 Jure Simoniti: What Remains of Hamlet After Death? 13:15-15 Lunch 15-15:45 (Chair: Jennifer Rust) Todd McGowan: Hegel as Philosophy's Shakespeare: Drama and the Unconscious (Zoom) 15:45-16:45 (Chair: John Gillies) Eda Cufer and Miran Mohar: NSK Theater: Play Within a Play (hybrid) 16:45-17:15 Coffee/Tea 17:15-18 (Chair: Stuart Elden) Richard Ashby: Face-Off: Defacement, Ethics and the 'Neighbour' in The Comedy of Errors 18-19 Roundtable (Chair: Björn Quiring) Information Source: Shakespeare in Philosophy | eventbrite

Artist crits are often absent from our professional practices post education, so following the success of our group crits during our open call shows and residencies, we're currently focusing the energies of the studio on artists developing their individual practices. Alongside bespoke practice mentoring, we have found crits to be the most powerful tool to help artists at all stages of their careers. This crit will be held in the intimacy of our back studio space, where Kate and Sally will lead the sharing of work and supportive discussion with other artists. NOTE: Please bring up to 1 piece of work or images of the work and a packed lunch. At RuptureXIBIT, we invite you to join us for a rigorous and supportive investigation into deepening and developing your art practice. Our workshops are appropriate for artists at any stage of their development, (you don’t need to be formally trained), but involve a rigorous, transparent, honest conversation about life in the generative. We are here to help you build (or re-examine and re-build) a supportive framework for your creative practice. Open to artists, musicians, writers, all who have or want to further their relationship to creative and acrobatic thinking. Every session is bespoke to the artists who join us, so if you’ve come to a previous session, keep coming back and the conversation will evolve with you. Bring hard questions and an open mind and let's get to work! TESTIMONIALS: The critique event expanded my perspective on my artistic identity, allowing me the freedom to discuss my art openly. It also sparked a curiosity to explore my work through performance and mixed media. Kate and Sally's dedication to what they do at Rupture is a pure joy and an inspiration. Thank you for creating a space where artists can thrive and be celebrated. This experience has ignited my passion to continue my artistic journey with newfound confidence and creativity.” - Anna I’m especially impressed by the critique session Rupture organized; we got to share insights about our works. It was very supportive and helpful. - Boyuan Information Source: RuptureXIBIT London | eventbrite
