Spring Wild Edibles | Jim Duke's Green Farmacy Garden, c/o CEI
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Canal Fulton
"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."
There is an abundance of wild, free food, that doubles as medicine, growing all around us! In this hands-on workshop, we will get to know early spring edible plants that can be found growing locally. We'll discuss how to identify them as well as how to work with them for food and/or medicine.
We'll start by gathering for herbal tea and introductions at the patio picnic table. We will then take a walk around the garden focusing on wild edible and medicinal plants that emerge in early spring. As we nibble our way through the garden, we will be harvesting the plants we meet to make a wild pesto together.
Some wild spring edibles we may meet and explore include:
purple dead nettle, Lamium purpureum
violet, Viola spp.
chickweed, Stellaria media
dandelion, Taraxacum officinale
nettle, Urtica dioica
bittercress, Cardamine hirsuta
ground ivy, Glechoma hederacea
onion grass, Allium vineale
peppergrass, Lepidium virginicum
garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata
henbit, Lamium amplexicaule
What to bring:
A notebook and writing utensil if you use them.
Please bring a harvest basket or bag, a small container for your pesto sample, and any snacks you may want to enjoy with it such as crackers, veggies, etc.

May Foraging Walk | Dr. Jim Duke's Green Farmacy Garden
May 18, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Canal Fulton
Meet common wild edibles of Spring already in their prime, as well as many about to peak and those to spot now for later season harvest.
This walk will introduce plants that grow commonly in a variety of ecological niches in our region -- exploring where to find them, what portion of the plant to harvest throughout the season, and how to align your foraging choices with responsible and interdependent ecological stewardship. Develop your knowledge of and relationship with local ecosystems to reclaim your place as full and worthy participant in - not alienated from - the dance of nature.
Please bring your own harvest basket or bag, hand-pruners or shears if you have them, and note-taking materials if you'll want them. This is NOT primarily a collecting excursion but an educational one, but it doesn't hurt to have your materials in case, or for stopping to collect on your way home!
