Every living being since the dawn of time has gazed up at the same moon. A moon which inspired mythology, literature, religion, philosophy, science; a moon that directs migrations, tides, the movement of leaves, and perhaps even the blood in our veins. You will be hard pressed to find an artist untouched by the moon. These workshops are first and foremost about inspiration . Every month I bring words and materials, and we use them as prompts, as jumping off points into our own writing. Join us for the May Moon - also known as the Flower Moon, Milk Moon, Frog Moon - who will this moon be to you? Suitable for every level of writing and every genre, whether you’re a dedicated moon-worshipper or someone who enjoys the simple awe of looking up into a night sky and finding light. ** Coco Lone Neal is an apprentice associate at the Writers Workshop and studying for an MA in Nature and Travel Writing. In a previous life she was a researcher on rivers, and you cannot look to water without also turning to the moon. image is by Maria Clara Eimmart (1676-1707), pastel on blue cardboard Information Source: The Writers Workshop | eventbrite

'Printing Positive Change' Screen Printing Workshop (May 2025) | Printed by Us

Cultural Experiences
What will you get up to? In this workshop you will learn how Printed by Us , a Social Enterprise as part of The Archer Project utilises the craft of hand screen-printing to empower and rehabilitate previously homeless individuals. During the session you will screen-print your own t-shirt (available sizes XS to 5XL) with a choice of one of two 'Printing Positive Change' designs, as well as a pack of 4 greeting cards. This will also give you an insight into how both textile and paper screen-printing differs. This is an introductory course, aimed at all skill levels as we focus on the mindful benefits of screen-printing and how it is used as a vehicle for positive change. All materials will be provided. What are the mindful benefits? While screen printing is undeniably a technical process, it also has therapeutic benefits. Art and mental health have many intersections! By focusing on each careful pull of the squeegee, you’re invited to be fully engaged in the act of creation, which can serve as a mental break and a way to recharge. Studies show that engaging in creative activities can reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. It can even be used as a tool to process trauma. Artistic processes—even ones as technique-focused as screen printing—offer a productive way to process emotions, whether through visual expression or simply by providing a calming routine. Becca Gurney of Art & Design faculty at Saint Michael’s College notes, “ It takes patience. You have to slow down with it. There is no way for it to be instant. A piece of taking care of your mental health is slowing down and being in the moment. Screen Printing allows you to do that. ” Who are Printed by Us? From ink to income… Printed by Us is a community-driven initiative focused on creating supported employment opportunities to help vulnerable adults lead more fulfilling lives. Combining the power of screen printing and creativity with a passion for social purpose, we produce high-quality screen-printed products that carry a deeper meaning. Our team collaborate with independent artists to bring their designs to life, creating unique, handcrafted items. Each product is carefully crafted using organic and sustainably made materials, with a focus on ethical production methods. As a Social Enterprise, all our profits go back into running more screen printing workshops, developing our project and supporting more vulnerable adults through professional development. Our latest venture involves opening up our print-room for external workshops; Learn how we use screen-printing to develop skills and confidence and leave with a t-shirt and a pack of cards, Printed by You! Unravel your untold stories in a safe, supportive space facilitated by local writer, Narimaan Shafi. Suitable for anyone with an interest in writing who identifies as global majority*. All levels of writing experience welcome. In this workshop we'll explore the personal narratives and histories that we carry with us, through creative writing exercises. *Global majority refers to people who are "black, Asian, brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and or have been racialised as 'ethnic minorities'" and "represent approximately 80% of the world's population", according to educator and activist Rosemary Campbell-Stephens MBE, who coined the term. About your facilitator Narimaan is a local writer identifying as brown and northern. Once a science teacher and then an instructional designer, she is now writing and is passionate about giving people the opportunity to write the stories they carry with them or have handed down to them. She won the Portico Rewriting the North Mentorship with Faber in 2022. Since then she has had a short story published in the anthology Tales from the Kitchen by Fox and Windmill. In 2024, she won the Off the Shelf Sheffield Short Story Competition. Come Cast with Me - Jewellery Casting Workshop Join me in the Silver Space facility at Yorkshire Artspace, Persistence Works for a hands-on jewellery casting workshop! Choose to sand cast a gorgeous ring or pendent. You’ll also have the option of adding coloured gems to your piece! This in-person event is perfect for beginners and seasoned jewellery makers alike. Over the course of the day Florence will lead you through each step of the process and support you in your making. At the end you’ll take your gorgeous piece away with you to cherish for life or gift to someone special. The workshop will take place in the gorgeous Silver Space within Yorkshire Artspace, Persistence Works studio complex in the heart of Sheffield city centre. A specialist facility for contemporary silversmithing in the north providing space for teaching, classes, short term bench hire, and settled space for professional silversmiths. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available, and there will be a break for lunch. About Florence Florence has almost 15 years’ worth of experience, designing and making in both precious and nonprecious metals. Returning to work after the birth of her daughter Florence launched Didi Cor, her handmade jewellery brand that specialises in sand cast jewellery pieces alongside bespoke jewellery commissions. Much of her work incorporates coloured stones that are cast into place. Sand casting is an ancient art, but casting over stones is considered more modern; it’s a playful and experimental technique that always yields surprising results. Florence also teaches within the subject at Sheffield Hallam University and was a former starter studio member at YAS before the studio became the gorgeous Sliver Space it is today. Additional Info There will be an assortment of different ring styles and sizes for you to work from. This workshop does not include calving your own design in wax. However if you know the ring size you require, please let Florence know before attending, email info@objectcor.com. Florence will do her best to make sure there are some of the right sizes for you to work from. Alternatively, if you have a ring you would like to try and make a copy of, you are welcome to bring it, but she can not guarantee that it will be suitable for this process. If you choose to make a pendent, the class fee does not include a chain to turn the pendent into a necklace. This can be purchased separately from Florence, or you can source your own. Explore the mythical and magical in this writing workshop! Suitable for beginner and intermediate writers of fantasy fiction (over 18s only). Myth and magic are integral components of fantasy writing. They tie in to both worldbuilding and characterisation, and they are essential plot drivers. A good, coherent magical system with a solid foundation in world stories makes for intrigue, compelling mystery, and a lot of fun for both writer and reader. This two-hour workshop will focus on how to generate ideas, then go on to craft and develop these elements of a fantasy writing project. We’ll discuss what makes myth and magic work well (or not) in fantasy, and do some practical, focused exercises. Perhaps you’ve the bare bones of a story or even just some initial ideas you want to build on, or maybe you’ve a more established project and want to hone the magical system and the mythological underpinnings of your world and its belief system. Either way, I’m looking forward to exploring magic with you! About the tutor: Jools Warner is a novelist and tarot reader based in Sheffield. As a novelist, she writes fantasy fiction and paranormal romance for adults, and spooky stuff for younger readers. She did an MA in Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University, graduating in 2022 with Distinction. Her debut novel Ernie and the Mage-Killer was published in 2024 with Bellows Press, and her second novel, Shadow on Darkling Edge , will be published in 2026 with Sul Books. Please Note The Writers Workshop is a nonprofit social enterprise on a mission to enable everyone to experience the joy and power of creative writing, both at our venue in Sheffield and online. Members of the Writers Workshop get a discount on all our events and other perks. For more information, visit www.thewritersworkshop.co.uk . Our space in Orchard Square, Sheffield, has no step-free access. If you have been excluded from this event due to inaccessibility, please let us know. We are committed to finding fully accessible premises and, in the meantime, making as many of our events available online as possible. Information Source: The Writers Workshop | eventbrite

Risograph Printing - Publish your own book/zine | Carousel Print Studio, Exchange Place Studios

May 31, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Gemeinde Pfaffenschlag bei Waidhofen an der Thaya
Cultural Experiences
About this course This riso workshop will guide you through the creation of a short edition of a mini booklet, utilising different tones of black ink, layered to create unique imagery. You will go home with an edition of 10 ‘hotdog’ books – a simple method of folding paper to capture a narrative over 8 pages. You will be guided through creative activities to establish a visual language to take through a series across the spreads of your booklet. Images can be drawn, collaged, photographic, typographic etc. You will then reproduce the artwork by scanning them into the risograph printer. The risograph printer is a remarkable machine (that rather boringly resembles an office photocopier!) It reproduces imagery at a high pace using the same principles as screen printing (pushing soya-based ink through a screen). It is an accessible and immediate way to create editions of any artwork. You are advised to bring your own reference images, especially If you have a theme or ‘story’ to capture, whilst considering who the audience might be for the multiples you create. About the Tutor Joanna Rucklidge is a Sheffield-based artist, designer and educator. Within her practice, she tackles issues around the value of disposable resources, whilst aiming to promote waste minimisation and re-use. She makes work by collecting, processing, disrupting and articulating visual responses to ‘rubbish’. She often uses waste materials for printmaking to minimise resource consumption, reduce costs, and enjoy the unique marks made by pre-used surfaces and objects. By its very nature, printing often involves re-use, repetition and returning resources to be used again. @not_for_hot_ashes joannarucklidgeprojects.blogspot.com What will I need to bring? All materials and equipment will be provided. Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy. No sandals, heels or open toed shoes. Aprons will be provided. You may want to bring a packed lunch and your own water bottle. Teas, coffees and biscuits are provided.
