Healthy Living Summer Camp for Middle School June 24-26th | Foundation for Wellness Classroom

Healthy Living Summer Camp for middle school features the "Too Good" and "Seeds of Nutrition" curriculum created by the Mendez Foundation and covers topics such as social skill development, substance abuse prevention, violence prevention, and nutrition. This is a 4-day summer camp.
Day 1 - Social Skill Development:
Setting reachable goals, making responsible decisions, managing emotions, and effective communication.
Day 2 - Drugs:
Effects of alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, prescription, over the counter, prescription, and street drugs.
Day 3 - Violence:
Respect for self and others, conflict resolution, anger management, identifying and managing bullying situations, and media violence.
Healthy Living Summer Camp teaches middle school students to weigh the positive and negative consequences of their choices as they examine how their emotions influence their goals and decisions. Students practice setting reachable goals, making responsible decisions, and communicating effectively with pro-social peers in fun, interactive games, activities, and role-play.
Students discuss the role of reporting bullying situations for the benefit and safety of everyone involved and practice peaceful methods to manage bullying situations in a healthy way for the bully, the target, and the witnesses. Students learn the effects of alcohol, nicotine, TCH, prescription, OTC, and street drugs. Students also learn the role of nutrients, hydration, exercise, and rest in promoting physical and mental well-being. This curriculum is provided by the Mendez Foundation and is evidence-based, and research based.
The cost of the program is $150 per student. If you would like to pay with cash or check to avoid Eventbrite fees, contact me at maddie@foundationforwellness.com to reserve your spot. The program is a 3-day program from June 24-26th from 9am-2:30pm. Students will be required to bring their own lunch, but water and snacks will be provided. Class will be held at the at Foundation for Wellness's Classroom (4630 Ambassador Caffery Pkwy. Bldg. A.) If you go through the main sliding doors, we are the first double doors to the right.
Cancellation & Refund Policy: Cancellations must be made within 48 hours of registering to receive a refund or reschedule. Registrants will forfeit a refund if registration is not cancelled within 48 hours. Registrants can re-schedule a class one time. If registrant fails to attend the rescheduled classes, he/she will not be able to reschedule, and funds will be forfeited.

Workshop 3: Summer Trees –
For this class we will learn how to paint loose but realistic fully leafed out summer trees. Included in this class will be some instruction on mixing the right colors for trees and tree trunks.
These classes have workshop in the title because each class will be delving into learning specific techniques and “mini” because they are only 2-1/2 hours long. The beauty of this format is that you can pick and choose which specific classes that you want to take based on your own interests and schedule. No long-term commitment is required. However, it is highly recommended that you have some previous watercolor experience or have taken a beginning watercolor class before. (See Laurie’s Beginning Watercolor – the Basics.)
NOTE:
In this class, the intent is to end with at least one completed mini painting but with the understanding that individuals may work at different pace. So, you might not complete an entire painting but will have learned techniques that can be carried forward with future painting endeavors.

Acrylic pouring is fun and easy. The results are somewhat random and gorgeous. Teacher will discuss color theory, demo and explain various techniques and provide plenty of time to create 1 or 2 finished paintings. You will have to pick up your finished painting the next day (or later if you need to) in order for them to dry laying flat. You will have a choice of a few different sizes of canvas. The class atmosphere is one of fun, comfortable, supportive, learning and experimentation.

Safe Sitter is a medically-accurate course to help young teens aged 11 and up feel more confident in their ability to care for younger children. Topics covered include infant and child CPR, caring for a choking infant or child, injury prevention and management, behavior management, safety for the sitter, child care essentials and more. This class can even help young teens feel more comfortable staying home alone.
All information is medically accurate and is taught by trained Safe Sitter instructors. During the course, students get hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques so they are prepared to act in a crisis. Also, each student receives a manual filled with great information and resources for the course and on the job, a Safe Sitter backpack, important numbers Post-Is pads, a Band-Aid dispenser and flashlight. The class will be held at the Foundation for Wellness Classroom from 9 am-3:30 pm.

Project Innovate: Innovation and Engineering Summer Camp, 9am-3pm
In this five day camp, your child will develop skills in design and engineering through hands-on robotics and design challenges. Biomimicry, looking to nature for inspiration for our own designs, will be part of the experiences.
Throughout the week we will visit several engineering labs to deepen students understanding of how engineering can be used to solve problems facing humanity.
We will video conference with leading experts in robotics and biomimicry.
Students will swim at the UL pool, weather permitting. All lunches are provided.
This course is taught by experienced teachers with STEM experience and assisted by UL education Majors.

Topics covered in this course include anatomy, consensual decisions, healthy relationships, consequences of risky behavior, prevention, STD symptoms and testing, and where to find more information or help. This curriculum is evidence-based and medically accurate. Our goal is to educate, create a positive impact on the youth in our community, and ultimately reduce the rates of STD infections in our community. This class is for teens ages 12-17 years old.
A parent or guardian must be present during the class
. Discussions surrounding sensitive topics such as consent and defining assault are included in the class.
The cost of the class is $30 per family, meaning you can bring multiple children if they are within the same family. This ticket also covers one or both parents or guardians. Slow Stitch asks you to take time to develop a deep connection with the materials, the creative process, and yourself. It strengthens the connection of our hands to the lineage of all those who have made stitch before us. We will start with a piece of fabric and a simple running stitch. We place our focus on the doing, not the product. As we work the needle and thread in and out, we will explore the ways we are invited to stillness, and calm. We will play with the qualities evoked through stitch, and explore the beauty inherent in repurposed materials. Familiarity with needle and thread requested.
Materials:
$10 Materials Fee payable to instructor. All materials provided including variety of fabrics, hand sewing needles, cotton threads and cotton batting. Consider bringing your small sewing scissors.

This class is designed for all ages - Kids 8 and up, teen, families and adults. You will create a special hand painted silk scarf. You will learn how to use a liquid resist to create your design on the silk. We will take a short lunch break while the resist dries and then paint the scarf with special silk dyes. We will set the dyes and wash and iron to finish your piece. Your creation is a perfect gift to give a loved one for a special occasion - you can have the whole family participate. More than one person can work on a scarf if it is being made as a gift.
