ShopBot CNC for Beginners: A Weekend Intensive
Eventbrite Overview
Ready to add CNC skills to your maker toolkit?
Join us for an immersive weekend where you'll go from complete beginner to confident ShopBot operator. This isn't your typical demonstration-heavy workshop – this is 100% hands-on learning where you'll design AND create your own project.
What Makes This Workshop Special
We believe in learning by doing. Over two days, you'll master every aspect of CNC routing, from digital design to finished product. Our intimate group format (maximum 4 participants) ensures you get extensive one-on-one instruction and plenty of actual cutting time on the ShopBot.
And because we're makers who make everything – yes, we even fire up the grill to make lunch together! It's all part of the collaborative, creative atmosphere that makes learning fun.
Your Weekend Journey
Saturday: Design Day (9 AM - 4 PM)
Start with CNC fundamentals and safety, then dive into design software. By lunch (fresh off the grill!), you'll understand how to think like a CNC operator. The afternoon is all about creating your custom project design with instructor guidance. You'll leave Saturday excited about what you're going to make.
Sunday: Make Day (9 AM - 4 PM)
This is where the magic happens. Set up your material, select your tools, and watch your design come to life. You'll operate the ShopBot yourself (with supervision), troubleshoot real situations, and finish your project to take home. By 4 PM, you'll have both a completed project AND the confidence to create more.
What You'll Learn
CNC fundamentals and safety protocols
Design software (VCarve Pro) from basics to toolpaths
Material selection and preparation
Tool selection and changes
ShopBot setup and operation
Troubleshooting common issues
Finishing techniques
Best practices for different project types
What's Included

Chris Smither in the Backyard | North Shore Point House Concerts
Jul 25, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Norfolk
Chris Smither
is a national treasure, a unique artist whose blend of blues and folk is timeless. He returns for his fifth backyard show on
July 25,
the first of four this year.
Tickets are $35 VIP with
7 p.m. entry
and $25 GA with 7:30 entry.Music at 8. Bring what you'd like to drink and eat. This will be a seated show under the tent.
During a career that spans more than five decades, he has created an enduring catalog of classics. Just check his double album, "Link of Chain," featuring newly recorded versions of his songs with friends including Allen Toussaint, Loudon Wainright III, Dave Alvin, Tim O'Brien, and Kris Delmhorst. He wrote "Love You Like a Man," which Bonnie Raiitt turned into a hit, among many other classics.
Listen:
"Link of Chain"
"Down in Thibodaux"
"Leave the Light On."
"No Love Today"
His latest and what he says is his last album is
All About the Bones
, as elemental as the inky black shadows cast by a shockingly bright moon. The listener is welcomed into some gothic mansion on an imaginary New Orleans street, and there in the lamplit parlor confronts the band, a minimalist skeleton crew: Smither’s inimitable propulsive guitar and rumbling baritone are joined seamlessly to producer David Goodrich’s carpetbag of instruments, Zak Trojano’s rock-steady, primal drumming, BettySoo’s diaphanous harmony vocals, and the flat, mournful flood of Jazz legend Chris Cheek’s saxophone.
God and the Devil are opened here. Mortality is too. Politics, consciousness, renewal, family, vulnerability, surrender…Smither has sat with these topics like so many Zen koans, for so long, that every line is a pearl.
Don't miss him this time through town.

When he was coming up, Benoit worked with singers Patti Austin, Connie Stevens, Ann-Margaret, and Lainie Kazan as her musical director/conductor. In 1976, Benoit released albums on the AVI label from 1977 to 1984. He later released several chart-topping recordings for GRP, including

Billboard
’s Contemporary Jazz Charts at #5, #1, and #2, respectively.
His other noteworthy recordings include
Letter to Evan
(1992), his tribute to another piano influence, Bill Evans, and
Here’s to You, Charlie Brown: Fifty Great Years

Orchestral Stories

Since the inception of
From Within
in January 2024, we’ve been on a mission to give people we admire in our community a platform to share their stories in a meaningful and positive light—and to inspire others. Over time, through engaging the community by attending events, hosting giveaways, and continuing to support our guests, our followers and supporters have consistently asked for things like merchandise, more interviews, and—most of all—an event.
That event is finally happening.
It will be an opportunity to bring together past guests, including Sebastian Vega and Shann, and to welcome our audience into a space where they can have fun, network, and connect with us in person—beyond just seeing us on social media.
Vega, a DJ from Virginia Beach, is a veteran in the scene. He’s one of the most prominent DJs in the area and has garnered millions of views on YouTube.
Darius Holley, a fashion designer from Virginia Beach and the owner of Tonaal, has elevated luxury sportswear in Hampton Roads to an unparalleled level.
Matheu “Dupe” Hall, a former professional soccer player turned coach and trainer, is spreading the game of soccer throughout the area—giving local youth a powerful outlet to express themselves and grow into leaders in their communities.
