Urban Foraging | Olympia Food Co-op
Jun 1, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Olympia
Available in your garden and in other disturbed areas, many gardeners are already recognizing many of the benefits of these 'interlopers.' However, when it comes to serving them up in the kitchen, few of us have learned to take full advantage of these labor-free gifts. This hands-on workshop includes discussion on gathering ethics, local rules and regulations, safety, and general information about how to cook with weeds. Attendees receive a link with foraging and cooking tips.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing. Our walk will be less than a mile. We will meet in front of our Westside store.
Instructor Melany Vorass Herrera is an Evergreen grad whose studies focused on ethnobotany and environmental policy. Retired now, her work included protecting water quality, conducting environmental cleanups and helping developers comply with the Endangered Species Act. Her book,
The Front Yard Forager
, brings DIY harvesting right to your door, making foraging easy, accessible, and fun for everyone even in the middle of the city or suburbia. Check her out at

Olympia
Pier Peer at Zittel's Marina
Underwater lights attract spectacular estuary creatures for you to observe, while our volunteer naturalists help you identify and learn more about what you’ve found. Also get a glimpse what's deep below with our underwater remotely operated vehicle.
Not recommended for those under 6 years of age due to presence of deep water in the dark.
Registration Policies and Event Info:
Preregistration is required as there is limited space.
Adults (Ages 13 and older) - $18
Children** (Ages 12 and younger) - $5
Or you can purchase a membership and receive
discounts on program and event tickets
plus free admission to Puget Sound Estuarium for a whole year! Check out our
website
for details.
**Children must wear life jackets during this event and be accompanied by an adult. There must be at least one adult per two children to ensure supervision and safety. We have some life jackets to borrow, but please bring your own if you can.
We have a discount that offers free registration to individuals or families with an EBT card. To utilize this new program, email Programs@pugetsoundestuarium.org with a photo of your EBT card and a valid ID.
Due to a change in Eventbrite policy, there will now be a processing fee associated with each ticket purchase.
Attire/Gear
- We highly recommend that each participant bring their own flashlight! Wear non-slip shoes as the dock can be slippery and dress for the weather. Not a bad idea for those with children to have spare clothes and towel in the car.
Accessability
- Depending on the tide the ramp down to the pier can be relatively steep. Dock surface may be uneven and flexes with the waves and tides. Email us if you have any concerns or accessability needs.
Cancellation
- We reserve the right to cancel Pier Peer due to low registration (under 8 participants) or bad weather. Our weather policy is based on Olympia School District closures, i.e. if the Olympia School District closes its schools based on weather, we will also cancel Pier Peer. In the case of above cancellations, the Estuarium will make every effort to work with registrants to reschedule.
All other cancellations (e.g. no shows or personal reasons) will not be rescheduled, nor refunded.
Liability Waiver
- All participants must sign a liability waiver that will be provided in the registration process.
