Amy Sherald quickly came to the public eye with her portraits of former US President Barack Obama and his wife. She defined her portrait subjects as "Americans" to express that black people are also an integral part of American identity. The nearly 50 paintings on display continue her figurative representation of the black experience, placing the characters in historically typical and everyday environments, inviting the audience to participate in a more complex debate about the recognized concept of American identity.

New Work: Samson Young | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
Dec 21, 2024–Jun 22, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Widely recognized for his singular approach towards sound and new technologies, Samson Young (born 1979, Hong Kong; based in Hong Kong) utilizes performance, video, and installation to rigorously examine the cultural, political, and historical contexts of sound. Samson Young’s first West Coast solo exhibition debuts Intentness and songs, a multimedia installation that poetically traces the idiosyncratic rhythms of love, memory, and experiences of time. In this interconnected audiovisual landscape, Young draws on the duration and rhythm of human and generative AI memory recall processes as the basis for polychromatic sculptures, videos, and a mesmerizing soundscape. Visitors are invited to wander through pathways of wooden boards with markings created through a mix of techniques and 3D-printed boards etched and embedded with objects and memories excerpted from the lives of the artist and his husband.

Mountains of the Mind: A Chinese Landscape Journey | Asian Art Museum
Jan 30–Jul 28, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Looking to get away from it all? This selection of idyllic landscapes by famed Chinese ink painters, past and present, offers a perfect opportunity to escape the hectic pace of city life in the digital age.
The selection on view offers a rare opportunity to enjoy a masterpiece by Ni Zan (1301-1374), a cultural icon in Chinese history, whose dry, spare brushwork evokes lyrical tranquility and a world cleansed of turmoil during the chaotic period of dynastic transition.
Following the ancient Chinese tradition of mountain worship, many of these landscapes use the contours of sacred mountains and the movements of waters and clouds to embody Daoist philosophy, beckoning the viewer to engage in a personal, cultural, and spiritual communion. As mountains are personified as venerable deities, rivers become their veins; mists are their breath; foliage is their hair; and rocks are their bones.
Beautiful, Bountiful, Boisterous Birds | Asian Art Museum
Feb 6–Sep 15, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Hawks, pheasants, ducks, quail, egrets, and other birds appear frequently in Japanese paintings. With roots in the Chinese “bird and flower” genre, some are traditionally associated with a particular season or sentiment; others were chosen by artists and patrons simply for their beauty.
The paintings currently on view in the Tateuchi Japanese Galleries use birds as both decorations and symbols, representing the seasons, strength, longevity, fidelity, or good fortune. They include decorative rimpa-style paintings; large, Kano-style screen paintings; and intimate hanging scrolls decorated in ink and faint colors.
Yuan Goang-Ming: Everyday War | Asian Art Museum
Apr 3–Jul 7, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
The personal becomes universal in recent work by pioneering Taiwanese artist Yuan Goang-Ming (b. Taipei, 1965), whose starkly poetic videos and installations examine the fragmented and surreal nature of contemporary life.Yuan’s work trains an unblinking, glacially cool digital gaze on poignant scenes of global and domestic unease. From the eerie stillness of empty streets during Taiwan’s annual air raid drills to the chaotic aftermath of an explosion detonated in his own living room, the artist captures moments that resonate with current living conditions worldwide.
Ruth Asawa Retrospective | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
Apr 5–Sep 2, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Nearly 12 years after her death, SFMOMA is presenting the first major national and international retrospective of Ruth Asawa’s work, a groundbreaking artist whose work is fully explored in her work. Born in California in 1926, Asawa was forcibly sent to an internment camp during World War II because of her Japanese descent. After her release, she attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina and began a prolific career that spanned six decades, spanning a variety of media from painting to sculpture, often drawing on organic forms and reflecting her deep affection for nature.
The exhibition will feature 300 of Asawa’s works in chronological order, with her signature hanging, looping wire sculptures—known for their “form within a form” constructions—taking a prominent place. The exhibition will also highlight her contributions to art education and public sculpture. In particular, a specially curated gallery will recreate Asawa’s home and studio in San Francisco’s Noe Valley, offering a glimpse into her family life and creative inspirations. The exhibition will feature her sketchbooks and experiments with materials such as copper, ceramic, electroplating and bronze, as well as the original hand-carved mahogany door of her former home and works by artists she admired, such as Josef Albers, Ray Johnson, Peggy Tolk-Watkins and Marguerite Wildenhain.

SF Cuddles - Cuddle Party at HeartLab! Saturday June 21st 2025 | The HeartLab
Jun 21, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Date Change
Due to unique circumstances, the date of this Cuddle Party moved to June 21st. The date was previously June 7th.
Here's some information on what Cuddle Parties are:
What is a Cuddle Party?
Cuddle Party is a 3-4 hours workshop experience where participants engage in communication exercises, explore touch in a non-sexual space, experience personal exploration and intimacy, and have fun with like minded people.
What do we do at a Cuddle Party?
We do two main things at Cuddle Parties: 1. Enjoy each other's touch. You can come and enjoy giving and receiving caring touch from other people who want to give and receive it. 2. Practice Consent. A major part of Cuddle Parties is learning how to ask for what you want and how to answer requests. Worried? Confused? Don't fret - we will teach, guide and help you practice how to do it.
Why is Cuddling important?
Nurturing and consensual loving touch is good for maintaining a healthy life, a strong nervous system and a balanced emotional state for people of all walks of life. One’s ability to connect with and develop greater trust in others is emphasized during the group exchanges during Cuddle Parties. Self-care is a cornerstone of the Cuddle Party experience.
Is this SEX?!
Great question! No. This is a non-sexual event. You have the option of experiencing touch and maybe intimacy if you'd like to - but we steer away from sexual behavior. If you are looking for something sexy, we're all for it! :) just not in this event.
You can find more info about Cuddle Parties after the logistical information below.
Some Frequently Asked Questions regarding COVID-19:

All participants must have received at least one booster.
I have not been fully vaccinated yet, but I have a negative COVID-19 test. May I join?
While we appreciate that this would mean you are a lower risk, I'm afraid that at the moment we cannot admit you to the event. Thank you for your patience and kindness for letting others who really need this be able to participate.

SOME MORE INFO ABOUT CUDDLE PARTIES:
The Live Greater Series
:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-WwqwyGUlk
Cuddle Party is a formal, non-sexual event that offers participants an opportunity to explore intimacy with like-minded others, in a relaxed environment, that upholds personal boundaries and maintains a professional atmosphere, at all times. People are encouraged to engage in communication and touch, in a non-threatening, share-affirming environment. Cuddle Party is a holistic, social environment, that attracts fascinating people from all walks of life. It provides a special and unique opportunity for connection, learning and growth.
Cuddle Party experiences teach participants that they alone (with the staff's assistance) create their own safety container. How does it change people's lives? Many of us have a hard time saying NO to requests, and saying no might make us feel afraid that we will hurt the other person. Very rarely do we get a chance to practice saying NO, or practice getting a NO in a safe and nurturing environment.
But it's not all about the NO, it's also about the YES! We practice saying YES to one another, and asking for what we want, and changing our minds - all very important skills that we don't put an emphasis on in our everyday lives. It's transformative for people!

Around Group f.64: Legacies and Counterhistories in Bay Area Photography | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
Nov 23, 2024–Jul 31, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Conversations at a party in Oakland in 1932 changed the history of photography. At that gathering, several now-iconic Bay Area figures — including Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Edward Weston — banded together to form Group f.64, a collective dedicated to “true” photography and the rejection of the prevailing style of Pictorialism, which mimicked painting. The group’s name was technical, referring to the camera lens setting that permits the greatest depth of field, but their mission was creative: to make photographs of startling clarity and beauty that rivaled art made in other mediums. Although Group f.64 lasted for less than a year, its legacy endured, marking the Bay Area as an epicenter for modernist photography.

Kunié Sugiura: Photopainting | San Francisco
Apr 26–Sep 14, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
This exhibition is the first US survey of the work of Kunié Sugiura, an artist whose boundary-defying engagement with the photographic medium spans over sixty years. Born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1942, Sugiura came to the United States in 1963 to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she majored in photography. After graduation, she relocated to New York and has lived there ever since.
Sugiura’s practice embraces a hybrid approach, blending various mediums and expressing her bicultural identity. The balancing of dualisms —Japanese/American, organic/human-made, and painting/photography — defines her work. Sugiura has stated that her cross-fertilization of photography with painting and sculpture partly stems from her desire that photography be taken seriously as an art form.

Sango
refers to his productions simply as beats, leaving the classification of his stylistically variable output -- which draws from contemporary R&B and hip-hop styles, non-commercial dubstep, funk carioca, and downtempo electronica -- to the listener. As a producer, the Seattle-based musician has worked with artists ranging from
Bryson Tiller
and
Tinashe
to
PinkPantheress
and
Wale
, but his own material has earned plenty of acclaim. In addition to his many self-released projects, Sango has recorded for labels like Soulection (2013's North) and Last Gang (2018's guest-heavy
In the Comfort Of
), and even RCA (2019's
Xavier Omar
collaboration Moments Spent Loving You). Over the next few years his music became increasingly diverse and often globally informed, with projects like 2020's Da Rocinha 4 and 97, a 2022 joint album with Brazilian singer
Juniper
.
Kai Wright
was born in Washington state but spent a good portion of his childhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan prior to attending college 50 miles south at Western Michigan University. When
Wright
graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts' degree in graphic design, his number of short-form releases under the name Sango was already in the double digits, and he had the support of Soulection, which had issued his 2013 set North. Additionally, he had begun flirting with the mainstream by co-producing "Cold Sweat" for
Tinashe
's Top 20 2014 hit
Aquarius
, and contributed to "The Sequence," off
Bryson Tiller
's
T R A P S O U L
, a Top 20 entry near the end of 2015.
Wright
's own releases continued to flow after he moved back to Seattle. Among the titles were 2016's Hours Spent Loving You (a collaboration with
Xavier Omar
) and 2017's
De Mim, Pra Você
, both of which were self-released. Last Gang Records issued 2018's
In the Comfort Of
, a major project featuring guests like
Smino
,
Jesse Boykins III
, and
James Vincent McMorrow
. A year later, he and
Omar
teamed up for the RCA-issued Moments Spent Loving You, a sequel to their previous outing.
Over the next several years, Sango's output remained not only prolific, but consistently diverse with globally influenced projects like Da Rocinha 4 and Shango, as well as regional ones like his 2022 Michigan homage Great Lakes Influence. A collaboration with Brazilian singer
Juniper
yielded the full-length 97, after which he focused on a series of 2023 single with artists like
femdot.
,
Earlly Mac
, and
Masego
.
