Restoring Hope to Heal Series: Addressing Generational Cycles and Trauma | ProMedica Ebeid Center
Jul 26, 2025 (UTC-4)
Toledo
Trauma can create barriers for individuals to build and maintain relationships within the communities they live, work, and serve. It can impact how people communicate and handle conflict and can hinder their ability to heal.
Can you imagine these going on for generations? Trauma not only impacts the present, but potentially impacts generations to come. There are individuals in our community who have been impacted by cycles and trauma of previous generations, adversely affecting their ability to thrive and keeping them in survival mode.
This event will feature a panel discussion to address how generational cycles and trauma can keep people from thriving when they have resources available to them, and how it can hinder them from forming and maintaining healthy boundaries and relationships.
It’s vital that we begin to heal in community and not in isolation. This event will be a safe and brave space for families as well as an opportunity to listen and learn about the experiences of our neighbors.
We invite individuals with lived experience and their supporters to attend. We highly encourage case managers, social workers, counselors, HR professionals, mentors, mentees, community leaders and supervisors to attend this event to learn about ways to support staff, clients, volunteers, and their peers.
If your organization is interested in providing resources or if you have any questions, please contact Alishea at
alishea@wynnenlightened.com
.
A light lunch will be served at this event.

Authors! with Carol Moseley Braun | Main Library - Toledo Lucas County Public Library
Jul 8, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Toledo
The Toledo Lucas County Public Library is thrilled to welcome Carol Moseley Braun to Toledo!
ABOUT THE BOOK:
In
TRAILBLAZER
, Moseley Braun details her stormy childhood in post-World War II Chicago up to her many firsts since entering politics in the 1970s, shattering ceilings and making history: The first Black woman ever elected to the Senate. The first Black woman on the Senate Judiciary committee. The first woman to represent the state of Illinois in Congress. The first Black woman to serve as a U.S Ambassador to New Zealand.
Yet her journey to Capitol Hill and to international renown was not an easy one, rife with obstacles, controversies, and lessons learned. In this memoir, Moseley Braun candidly shares the story of her extraordinary life in a fascinating narrative filled with poignant, powerful, and sometimes funny stories. Born into a family of New Orleans jazz musicians and Alabama farmers whose history of activism and military service dates back to the Civil War, Moseley Braun talks about her remarkable life including:
· Marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and her engagement during the civil rights, women’s and Black Power movements
· How her unusual encounter with a bird catapulted her into politics
·How Gloria Steinem, Maya Angelou and Hollywood celebrities supported her groundbreaking Senate campaign
· Passionately filibustering against the Confederate Flag on the Senate floor
· The friendships and alliances made throughout her storied career, from Joe Biden to Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy
· Running for president as the lone woman in a field of men
· How meeting icons Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela and Dr. Dorothy Height inspired her
TRAILBLAZER
is a story of perseverance, a moving narrative from a once-in-a-generation icon, steeped in the history of our nation. Carol Moseley Braun offers readers her uniquely American story and an optimistic letter to future generations on the work we have done and have yet to do, to ensure that the United States lives up to the promise of liberty and justice for all.
“My life has been filled with serendipity, adventure, and adversity,” said Carol Moseley Braun, who was sworn in as Chair of the United States African Development Foundation in 2024. “Every experience has been anchored by my strong faith in God.”

Authors! with Kristina McMorris | Main Library - Toledo Lucas County Public Library
Jul 22, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Toledo
ABOUT THE BOOK:
She came from a lineage known for good fortune...
by those who don't know the whole story.
Oregon, 1888. Amid the subterranean labyrinth of the notorious Shanghai Tunnels, a woman awakens in an underground cell, drugged and disguised. Celia soon realizes she's a "shanghaied" victim on the verge of being shipped off as forced labor, leaving behind those she loves most. Although well accustomed to adapting for survival—being half-Chinese, passing as white during an era fraught with anti-Chinese sentiment—she fears that far more than her own fate hangs in the balance.
As she pieces together the twisting path that led to her abduction, from serving as a maid for the family of a dubious mayor to becoming entwined in the case of a gold miners' massacre, revelations emerge of a child left in peril. Desperate, Celia must find a way to escape and return to a place where unearthed secrets could prove deadlier than the dark recesses of Chinatown.
A captivating tale of resilience and hope,
The Girls of Good Fortune
explores the complexity of family and identity, the importance of stories that echo through generations, and the power of strength found beneath the surface.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Kristina McMorris is a
New York Times
,
Wall Street Journal
and
USA Today
bestselling author of two novellas and eight historical novels, including the million-copy bestseller
Sold on a Monday
. Published by Sourcebooks Landmark, Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Harper Muse, and Kensington Books, her novels have garnered more than two dozen prestigious awards and nominations, most notably the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, RWA's RITA® Award, and a Goodreads Choice Award for Best Historical Fiction.
At age nine, she began creatively expressing herself when she embarked on a five-year stint as the host of an Emmy® and Ollie award-winning kids' television program. Being half Japanese, Kristina jokes that she discovered a genetic kinship with the camera early in life and continued to nurture that relationship by acting in many independent and major films while living in Los Angeles. Later, as the owner of a wedding/event planning company, she served as the six-year host of the WB's weekly program
Weddings Portland Style
.
Kristina's extensive experience in media and events led her to becoming a professional emcee and contributing writer for
Portland Bride & Groom
magazine. Her previous writing background also includes ten years of directing public relations for an international conglomerate.
In 2001, deciding sleep was highly overrated, she compiled hundreds of her grandmother's favorite recipes for a holiday gift that quickly evolved into a self-published cookbook. With proceeds benefiting the Food Bank,
Grandma Jean's Rainy Day Recipes
sold at such stores as Borders and appeared frequently in regional media. It was while gathering information for the book's biographical section when Kristina happened across the letters her grandfather mailed to his "sweetheart" during his wartime naval service—a collection that years later inspired McMorris to pen her first novel, a WWII love story titled
Letters from Home
.
Since her debut released in 2011, in addition to her novellas in the anthologies
A Winter Wonderland
and
Grand Central
, Kristina's published works have expanded to include the novels
Bridge of Scarlet Leaves
,
The Pieces We Keep
,
The Edge of Lost
,
Sold on a Monday
,
The Ways We Hide
, the collaborative
When We Had Wings
, and the forthcoming
The Girls of Good Fortune
(out May 2025). She also collaborated with her sister, artist Amanda Yoshida, on the picture book
Ellie Mae Dreams Big!
McMorris' books have been optioned for TV/film and translated into numerous languages, as well as appeared in compilations by Readers Digest, Doubleday, the Literary Guild, and more.
A frequent guest speaker and workshop presenter, she holds a B.S. in International Marketing with a concentration in multiple languages from Pepperdine University. She splits her time between San Diego and Portland, Oregon, where she's the proud mom of two collegiate (going-on-forty) boys who continue to make her laugh daily.
