The boat will depart promptly at 9:30 AM and leave the island at 4:00 PM to return to Eastern Passage by 4:30 PM. New this year! Join the Friends of McNabs Island and Wil Brunner , a certified Nature and Forest Therapist, with www.softpinewellness.ca for a Forest Bathing experience on McNabs Island. Experience Forest Bathing, Japanese Shinrin-Yoku , and welcome a mindful sense of calm and exploration through a new perspective. Using Forest Bathing and Mindfullness activities, connect your senses to the natural environment on McNabs Island. Mindfullness and sensory approaches reduce stress and promote positive well-being. The Forest Bathing tour will take place at various locations on McNabs Island. Beginning at the English Victorian Gardens and the Teahouse Outdoor Education Centre, the tour will include a nature walk to the top of Jenkins Hill and through the ruins of the World War Two Detention Barracks . With several "invitation" stops along the way, the tour will continue down to Garrison Road, and McNabs Pond and Maughers Beach . Forest tea will be served at the end of the tour. After the tour, do some beachcombing along Maughers Beach or go for a relaxing swim. Dress for the weather and island environment. Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. The island's trails are rough in some places because storms have washed rocks up onto the trails. Visitors should expect to walk at least 5-7 km on this hike. Bring sunscreen, sunhats, insect repellent that repels ticks, plenty of drinking water, and a lunch. Everyone must get their tickets in advance. This slow-paced Forest Bathing Tour is recommended for those 16 years of age and older. Sorry, NO dogs on this Forest Bathing tour. Also smoking tobacco or cannabis and the consumption of alcohol are prohibited in the provincial park. If you are bringing children, tickets are needed for babies and toddlers 3 years and younger, who will travel for free, courtesy of the Friends of McNabs Island. There is NO rain date and there are NO refunds. However, in the event of heavy rain or gale force winds, OR if the park is closed, the tour will be cancelled and tickets refunded. Rainbow Aurora - feel yourself relax as you watch strips of light dancing around the dome, with sounds that follow their gentle movement. Follow The Water - a ‘real world’ 360-degree video experience following water on its journey, from meandering rivers to the joys of the seaside, spectacular wildlife and water activities. Colour Your Senses - a journey of swirling particles that collide, overlap and disperse, enveloping the dome in glittering lights. Join the Friends of McNabs Island for a guided h ike along the changing coastline of McNabs Island on a Shoreline Tour! · Visit the newly restored Teahouse Outdoor Education Centre for an island orientation. · Learn about the changing shape of the island as beaches and coves come and go. · As sea levels rise, and more storms batter the coastline, more changes to the island are in store. · Stroll along sandy Maughers Beach , which didn’t exist 80 years ago. · Walk around peaceful McNabs Pond , which has changed from a cove to a tidal inlet, then to a freshwater pond and now back to a tidal inlet again. · Visit Fort McNab National Historic Site and learn how this historic hilltop with its panoramic view was created. · Turn to the south and the Atlantic Ocean and see if you can spot disappearing Little Thrumcap. · At the end of the day, dip your toes in the cool waters of Halifax Harbour. As part of Shark Month, schools can enjoy two very special talks all about sharks from dive instructor, professional underwater photographer/videographer and author Caroline Roberston-Brown. Caroline will demonstrate the equipment she uses to shoot images and video underwater, including dive kit and cameras, talk about what it is like to dive with sharks including Caribbean Reef Sharks, Manta Rays and Hammerhead - and explore how amazing sharks are! Legend of the Enchanted Reef When their home reef is destroyed by a fishing trawler, three brave fish set out on a quest across the vastly polluted ocean to find the “Enchanted Reef” – a mythical underwater haven free from humans… The lively perciform Shorty, his smart sister Indigo and Jake, a daring sawfish, thrive in a bustling and colourful coral reef. One day, out of nothing, an enormous trawl devastates their reef. Our three heroes survive this cataclysm only with a great deal of luck. They are forced to leave their destroyed habitat and go on a search for a new and safe home. “Legend of the Enchanted Reef” is an imaginative and humorous, as well as exciting and touching animated movie for the whole family: the quest of three lovable characters for a safe home reveals the moving beauty of the seas but also their endangerment through massive human impact. The story combines entertaining and educative elements into a sustainable message about the great importance of our oceans.
