Holiday workshops: Designing for plants (ages 7–8) | The Royal Institution

Jul 28, 2025 (UTC+1)
City of Wolverhampton District
Family Events
In this playful and creative workshop, young designers are introduced to the idea of architecture through the eyes of a plant. With a seedling as their special “client,” children are invited to imagine, draw, and build a perfect plant home—one that keeps it warm, watered, and full of sunshine! Designed especially for younger children, this workshop supports creative thinking, empathy, and an understanding of how we can use design to help living things thrive. It’s a joyful blend of science, art, and imagination—and every child leaves with a growing reminder of their own ideas. Philip Wells is a Chartered Architect and founder of a RIBA-accredited architectural practice, with a passion for creative learning and education outreach. Since 2014, he has delivered architecture-based workshops in schools across Central and SW London and is an active RIBA Architectural Ambassador. His past work includes serving as Lead Architect on the award winning Halley VI Antarctic Research Station (Hugh Broughton Architects) and contributing to the Millennium Bridge in London at Foster + Partners. Philip specialises in using architecturaldesign to unlock creative thinking in young people through hands-on, curriculum-connected experiences. This workshop is strictly for ages 7–8 only. Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions. YSC Holiday Workshops: Cosmetic Chemistry (ages 9–11) | The Royal Institution

Jul 28, 2025 (UTC+1)
City of Wolverhampton District
Family Events
Students will explore the difference between acids and alkalis and how they react to form a salt. Using this knowledge they then make their own personalised bath bombs. The workshop also allows students to discover the properties of oils and waxes and how they are able to dissolve into one another, which they use to create their own lip balms. This workshop is a great introduction to pH, neutralisation, solubility and changes. This workshop is strictly for 9–11 year-olds and will include a 30 minute supervised lunch break. Students should bring lunch and a drink. Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. In this hands-on workshop, children become eco-architects tasked with designing the perfect miniature home—not for a human, but for a plant! By working with real seedlings and exploring the basic needs of living systems, students learn to think empathetically and creatively. Guided by the question “What would a plant want from its home?”, children explore how living things depend on light, air, water, and warmth to grow—and how architecture can respond to these needs through clever, child-led design. “Designing for Plants” blends elements of science, citizenship, and creativity into a joyful, memorable experience where the young architect is in charge—and the client has roots! Philip Wells is a Chartered Architect and founder of a RIBA-accredited architectural practice, with a passion for creative learning and education outreach. Holiday workshops: Build like Bucky (ages 12-14) | The Royal Institution

Jul 29, 2025 (UTC+1)
City of Wolverhampton District
Family Events
What if the strongest shape in the world… isn’t a square? In this hands-on architecture and design workshop, students aged 12–14 explore the bold ideas of Buckminster Fuller—an innovator who believed that triangles, not rectangles, were nature’s true building blocks. Students will investigate how geometry shapes the world around us, from honeycombs to domes to molecules. They’ll learn why the tetrahedron—a three-sided pyramid—is stronger than it looks, and how geodesic structures use simple shapes to create lightweight, stable forms. Along the way, they’ll experiment with different methods of making using art straws, cocktail sticks, polystyrene balls, and modular origami. The workshop combines individual thinking and collaborative teamwork, with plenty of discussion, drawing, and building. A final challenge lets students test their ideas using cocktail sticks and marshmallows to build a dome structure of their own design. “Build Like Bucky” stretches spatial awareness, creativity, and engineering intuition in a fun, engaging setting. It links geometry and design to real-world ideas—and encourages young people to reimagine how we think about space, strength, and structure. YSC Holiday Workshops: Bacterial Evolution (ages 15–18) | The Royal Institution

Jul 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
City of Wolverhampton District
Family Events
This workshop looks closely at the evolutionary arms race between bacteria and the host immune system and how different strains of bacterial species evolve over time. In this workshop, students investigate four fictional bacterial outbreaks by performing restriction enzyme digests on DNA samples isolated from each of the scenes. Using gel electrophoresis, they will then compare the banding patterns to reference samples of known strains. Students will then decide what advice to give their colleagues at the scene of the outbreaks or whether the samples need further investigation. This workshop is strictly for 15–18 year-olds and will include a 30 minute lunch break, during which students will be allowed to leave the Ri building. Students should bring lunch and a drink. We reserve the right to refund or deny entry to those who are not in this age range. Please note that closed toe shoes must be worn as this workshop takes place in our lab. Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions. Holiday workshops: Maths in Motion (ages 15-18) | The Royal Institution

Jul 31, 2025 (UTC+1)
City of Wolverhampton District
Family Events
What if you could measure gravity using just a toy car and a ramp? In this hands-on physics workshop, teens will derive the "suvat" equations from first principles—exploring how displacement, velocity, acceleration, and time are linked in motion. Once the maths is mastered, it’s time to hit the track: participants will set up a simple experiment with an accelerating toy car on a ramp, recording times and distances to gather real data. Using their equations and results, they’ll calculate the acceleration due to gravity (g) and see how close they can get to the real value of 9.8 m/s². This workshop is strictly for ages 15–18 only. Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions.
