Geology Series | Recent Advances in Geology | Talk 3 | The Lit & Phil
Jul 8, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Newcastle West
Tuesday 8th July 2025 | 6pm
Dr Mark Ireland, Senior Lecturer in Energy Geoscience and Associate Dean Global Partnerships, Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering, Newcastle University
Inspired by Recent Investigations in Geology (3 lectures by Prof Ansted, 1867-1868 Lecture Season)
David Thomas Ansted F.R.S. (5 February 1814 – 13 May 1880) was an English professor of geology and author of numerous books on geology.
Talk 3: The heating potential of geothermal energy
The International Energy Agency identifies that almost half of building energy demand was for space and water heating. In the UK, the heating of buildings (homes, commercial, and public) accounts for 23% of carbon emissions. So, as part of a least-cost pathway to meet our net-zero commitment, there are targets to expand the use of heat networks by 2050. Geothermal energy could provide a sustainable and widely accessible option for heating and contribute to the expansion of low-carbon heat networks. The utilization of geothermal energy for heat is established, but the successful exploration and characterization of geothermal resources is in its infancy in the UK. In this talk, we will explore the role that it can play in providing low-carbon and secure energy.

Exploring 200 Years of Exciting Lit & Phil Experiments and Demonstrations
Scientists Neil and Diane Downie will show and tell you all about demonstrations from the Lit & Phil's history over the last 200 years!
The demonstrations are novel, but will hark back to the Age of Steam, to the key discoveries in transport, hydraulics, lighting and telecommunication. You’ll see how vacuum can be used to operate engines and railways, how a light bulb can also be used to measure the faintest puff of wind, and how messages can be sent over miles of wires in simple ways.
They will come right up to the present day with an commercially available invention nick-named the Mollimeter, for measuring molecular weight, and a novel kind of semi-electronic musical instrument. Most of the demonstrations you can try yourself at the end. And we’ll have a (free!) little something for parents to take away for children.

Saturday 19th July | 12:30pm
A special story for listeners between 3 and 6 with their friends and families from Chris Bostock - your local Storyteller..
With designs by Alison Ashton and Music by Ken Patterson.
To begin with the Little Mouse was unhappy.
Her house was all wrong, nothing seemed right,
It was messy and small and it felt cold at night.
So she set off to find somewhere better to stay,
And met some new friends as she went on her way.
They all gave her presents, but none were ideal,
Until she found somewhere,
that just made her squeal!!
But where was it?
Who lived there? and would it be safe?
Little Mouse is going to need a lot of help on her journey
