ASDC National Conference 2025: The next 25 years
Tuesday 9th & Wednesday 10th September
Reflect. Adapt. Thrive.
The ASDC Conference brings together delegates from the UK’s major science engagement organisations to play a strategic role in the nation’s engagement with science. Working in collaboration with people from these key organisations, the conference programme of talks, workshops, networking sessions and discussions will explore what’s on the horizon for the sector right now, over the next 5 years and longer term over 25 years.
A quarter of a century of impact, a future of infinite possibilities.
ASDC25 celebrates 25 years of national impact with many of the 'millennium science centres' celebrating 25th anniversaries this year! The conference kicks off a visionary look forward with many of the most influential people in science and cultural engagement, hosted by the team at Bradford's National Science and Media Museum.
In a world that’s changing fast, standing still isn’t an option. Join powerful conversations that ask the big questions: What must we change? What should we protect? What do future audiences need from us?
Your network, your moment!
Come and meet peers, pioneers and change-makers from around the UK. Whether you're a CEO, curator, or creative producer, ASDC25 brings together a national network ready to share ideas and scale impact.
Live from the Science and Media Museum, Bradford - a city of stories and innovation.
Experience the UK’s only museum dedicated to exploring the intersection of science, media, and culture. Expect immersive installations, northern hospitality, and a venue that lives and breathes future-facing thinking. Give yourselves time to stay and explore the city and the amazing programme of events as part of the City of Culture 2025.
Don’t just attend, come and influence.
Your voice matters and your presence helps shape how we can thrive for the next 25 years. Expect interactive sessions, pop-up provocations, creative labs and celebrations with an evening of socials where everyone can connect, unwind and raise a glass to the next chapter!
Opening the conference with an exciting keynote speech will be Shanaz Gulzar, Creative Director, Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture who will be sharing her vision to break down the perceived siloes between the sciences and the arts.
Jo Quinton-Tulloch, Director of National Science and Media Museum says:
“We’re thrilled to be hosting this year’s ASDC conference and cannot wait to welcome delegates to the National Science and Media Museum. With Bradford as the UK City of Culture there has never been a better time to visit. I look forward to celebrating the amazing work of our sector and showcasing what Bradford has to offer!”

Paula will share with you her techniques for creating atmospheric landscapes and dramatic skies with transparent colours and blending techniques using squeegees, palette knives and brushes.
The workshop will include information about techniques, as well as demonstrations and plenty of time for practice. You will be amazed by what you can create in just one day!
What will be covered?
• Introduction to using cold wax medium with oils
• Introduction to the tools
• Working wet-on-wet
• Using transparent and opaque colours to create depth and atmosphere.
• Incorporating pigments into your work
• Blending techniques
Do I have the experience?
Whether you are a professional artist or haven’t picked up a paint brush since school, absolutely no experience of painting or of working in oils needed. Just come prepared to have fun and to experiment.
What shall I bring with me?
All materials and use of tools are covered in the price of the workshop. Please bring your own apron or shirt that you don’t mind getting splashed with paint.
Where is the workshop being held?
The workshop is held at the Craft House in Bingley, West Yorkshire which is also where Paula has her studio. Bingley is easy to get to by road, train and plane and we have lots of people who travel from all over the country to attend one of Paula’s workshops.
There are lots of places to visit within a short distance from Bingley including the World Heritage site, Saltaire where you can see some original David Hockneys; the beautiful village of Haworth, made famous by the Brontes; and the stunning Yorkshire dales with its three peaks and Malham cove.
There’s so much to see and do you’ll want to make a weekend of it!
I’m hooked… what other workshops can I do?
Why not join the 1-day Exploring oil and cold wax workshop and experiment with techniques for building rich layers of texture, patterns, marks, and colour to form rich, complex foundations to your paintings. We will focus on mark making with drawing materials and explore different ways to create textures, patterns and lines using a variety of tools and solvent reduction techniques.
Alternatively, if you want to immerse yourself in a 3-day workshop then you could progress to the Advanced oil and cold wax workshop where we will experiment with advanced techniques as well as work on creating a series of paintings.
* Please note that some of the materials used during the workshop are not vegan. This includes the paper used throughout the workshop which unfortunately cannot be substituted for another product.
Workshop cancellations
There are occasions where workshops do not achieve enough bookings to allow them to viably proceed. In these instances, we will notify you at least 14 days prior to the scheduled workshop. We will either:
a. issue a refund or
b. with your permission, transfer your booking to a rescheduled date/workshop.
The only circumstances under which we would seek to cancel/reschedule your workshop within 14 days' notice would be those outside of our control, for example artist illness.
We have many workshop attendees coming to us from across the UK and beyond. Please note that we cannot guarantee that any workshop will proceed, so any travel plans or associated costs are not the responsibility of The Craft House where a workshop is cancelled or rescheduled.
